Ubuntu :: Virtual Box Not Recognizing External Harddrives?
Jan 9, 2010
I am trying to accomplish the simple task of renaming my harddrives on Ubuntu, but the developers of Ubuntu decided that they didn't want anyone to have the ability of accomplishing such a simple task in an easy way!
I have been trying to get Gparted to work so I can rename my harddrives, but it doesn't want to work. (What a surprise!) So I decided it might be easier to simply install virtualbox and rename the harddrives through the virtual Windows system. The only problem is that Virtualbox won't recognize the harddrives, so I can't bloody well rename them!

In the past, I have used dd to replace (as well as overwrite) hard drives.
If you do a direct clone of a drive, you are supposed to make sure the target drive is the same size as the source drive.
It is quite important that I am able to clone a failing drive (250GB), however, my only other drive available is a completely new 1TB external hard drive from a different manufacturer.
Is it still possible for me to safely clone the failing drive? If yes, how would I go about doing this? Make a 250GB partition on the 1TB drive?
If I use the TB drive as a "temporary backup", and once I have copied over with dd burn everything directly to DVDs, and then restore the TB drive to it's original state, will this be able to be done?

I am trying to make my Lexmark P4350 printer work so I downloaded Virtual Box on my laptop and installed Windows XP on it. This printer worked great with XP on another computer. I have done all the updates to XP and it seems to be working just fine but when I go to the printer set up, it is not showing up. I have tried it where I plug in the printer while Virtual Box is running, but it didn't seem to make any difference. When I plug the printer into the usb port, Ubunto starts searching for the drivers but the Virtual Box doesn't.

I have a Red Hat 5.3 virtual machine that has 3GB memory. I just upgraded the memory to 4GB, however when I run free -m it still only recognizes 3GB. Is there something else I need to do?

I installed apache server on my Fedora 12. Its showing the test page 127.0.0.1, but when I give the address 97.168.234.76 (0r www.chaalu-kam.com), it tells that the requested url could not be retrieved.
I have made the following additions to the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file
Code:
NameVirtualHost 97.158.234.76
<VirtualHost 97.158.234.76>
ServerName www.chaalu-kam.com

I am attempting to stand up a new server Red Hat EL6 with Bugzilla-4.0 and everything is working expect Virtual Host. By defualt Bugzilla looks for SetEnv PROJECT (variable) in the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file. I followed the given instructions to place SetEnv PROJECT (variable) under <VirtualHost> however bugzilla doesn't recognize that it is there. When I put SetEnv PROJECT outside of <VirtualHost> then it becomes the default for ALL my different virtual host instead of using what is inside the <VirtualHost> section.
Here is the NameVirtualHost section of my httpd.conf file
NameVirtualHost *:443
SetEnv PROJECT UIDPMO
<VirtualHost 140.188.65.31:443>
[code]....
PS: Here is what Bugzilla 4.0.1 guide says to do: 2.4. Multiple Bugzilla databases with a single installation The previous instructions referred to a standard installation, with one unique Bugzilla database. However, you may want to host several distinct installations, without having several copies of the code. This is possible by using the PROJECT environment variable. When accessed, Bugzilla checks for the existence of this variable, and if present, uses its value to check for an alternative configuration file named localconfig.<PROJECT> in the same location as the default one (localconfig). It also checks for customized templates in a directory named <PROJECT> in the same location as the default one (template/<langcode>). By default this is template/en/default so PROJECT's templates would be located at template/en/PROJECT.
To set up an alternate installation, just export PROJECT=foo before running checksetup.pl for the first time. It will result in a file called localconfig.foo instead of localconfig. Edit this file as described above, with reference to a new database, and re-run checksetup.pl to populate it. That's all. Now you have to configure the web server to pass this environment variable when accessed via an alternate URL, such as virtual host for instance. The following is an example of how you could do it in Apache, other Webservers may differ.
<VirtualHost 212.85.153.228:80>
ServerName foo.bar.baz
SetEnv PROJECT foo
Alias /bugzilla /var/www/bugzilla
</VirtualHost>
Don't forget to also export this variable before accessing Bugzilla by other means, such as cron tasks for instance. For anyone that fell into the same trap as I did. The Bugzilla guide neglects to tell you where to set the SetEnv PROJECT variable. It turns out that you need to add this variable in the /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf file under each virtual host section. So for me I did the follwoing
<VirtualHost_default_443>
SetEnv PROJECT PDS
Save the file, restarted Apache and everything worked as expected. Although I did include the NameVirtualHost section in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf I don't think it made a difference.

Im using it in an attempt to backup all of the files off of my dead Windows xp Computer. Right now I am using the 9.10 live disk of Ubuntu and cannot get the program to recognize what kind of file system my internal hard drive is using. (A western digital 320 GB hard drive with partition 1 in NTFS and part2 in FAT32) I would like to be able to back up this drive onto my 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive that is also in ntfs.
Now here comes the wierd part, it won't read or recognize my interal and external hard drives that run those file systems but it will recognize and allow me to read, edit, and access all of the ntfs hard drives on my home network. I did some lurking and tried a tutorial for creating a mount point and on how to force mount a disk, but neither of my disks would show up in Places/Computer. So then I checked the /etc/fstab file and is says,
aufs / aufs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0
Which I think means that it says I have no hard drives installed or connected to the computer. Yet when I go into Disk Utility it tells me the disk is there and asks if I want to format the disk into ntfs...

if anyone can send me in the proper direction for this question, I would be grateful. I installed the newest Linux mint on the newest version of virtual box. I'm have trouble with program "giver" recognizing the virtual machines. I'm not sure if it has to do with the fact that, its using my mac's ip addresses or not. i have 2 other Linux mints installed on two other pc's on the same local network, and they recognize each other just fine. so my question is, does a virtual machine have to have its own ip address for program "giver" to recognize each other? maybe i have to change the network driver on vbox, but every time i do, i lose connection. at the moment, my network driver is set to NAT.

I got Lucid Lynx and i want to partition the drive into two harddrives when i install, like with windows i would have my harddrive made into C and D and i would have windows on the C and all my movies and stuff on D. I saw some things about making the rest of your space to store files in the /home files but i when i log into ubuntu after installing it shows the /home folder inside the disk. I dont know if it makes sense but, i was wondering if u can have it the way windows does it so it looks like two harddives and which options to select when i'm paraitioning. i really want to change over to ubuntu i just wanna work this out first cause i dont know so much yet haha.

Does anyone know how to delete that virtual CD thing that is built into WD harddrives? Nothing I've tried works and I can't find anything about it online. If it can't be deleted, can it at least be disabled so that I don't have to look at the cd icon every time I plug in the hd?

i Have two Hard-drives a WD 500Gb Sata with windows 7 installed and an IDE Maxtor 40Gb mounted as slave .I want Ubuntu to be installed on the Maxtor.I usually used to choose grub to be installed on the MBR of the first one , but that meant that every time i needed to reinstall windows or Ubuntu i Would loose both of them, how to do so, without effecting the boot loader of the windows but still capable of booting both.Story made short, if i disconnect any of the hard drives i would still be capable of booting into the other.

how I can fix this or how I can investigate this issue further? The harddrives are okay, they work as expected with the board's sata ports.

I am currently in process of remodeling my home file server and would like some advice. The server has two internal hard drives that are rather small (10-15G) and I've now ordered a larger 2 TB drive which for the time being will have to run as an external drive through USB 1 (going to be rather slow).
I'm probably going to put the OS and swap on one of the internal drives but I was wondering if there was a good option for increasing the system's performance by making the second internal drive act as a kind of buffer for the 2TB usb drive. I'd like both the advantages of the large size of the USB drive and the fast read/write speed of the internal drive. Would it be possible to put it together so all reads and writes to the fileserver would first go to the fast internal drive (or even better, to internal drive and USB drive at once, although I suppose RAID is not an option with USB attached storage), and would then be put to the large drive. It would also be nice if the most used files from the large USB drive would be cached on the internal drive for fast read speed. I understood that ZFS would help me accomplish something the like but as I understand, it's not that easily available on Linux.
The current plan is to make the large drive a simple XFS drive and build a small daemon on the server that would simply move all new files from the internal drive to the USB one, once they are not used but it would be nice to have a more low level solution.

I currently have a dual boot on my 160gb hdd, but even that feels cramped. i was wondering...I have a spare 40gb harddrive compatible with my laptop. could I just install the windows 7 installation there?
assumably i'd swap in the appropriate windows 7 hdd whenever i'd want to load windows 7 at Grub.
what do you guys think?

I am trying to install a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, but I am finding it is not recognising my only HDD in the machine. It is working because I am running Windows 7 x64 on it.
Here are my machine specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
Motherboard: XFX MI-A78U-8309 GeForce 8300
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8300 + 8400
HDD: WDC WD5001AALS-00L3B2 ATA (~415GB)
The installation knows when my IDE drive is plugged in, but I want to install the boot sector in the WDC drive.
WUBI also fails to install on this current drive, though can setup the boot sector OK.

apache virtual host to limit the concurrent connections of virtual hosts? Taking into account the host of each virtual user's home directory can also have more than one subdirectory, which should be restricted to a subdirectory. Is beyond the control of the operation of these sites in a subdirectory. Best local restrictions or limitations to the overall situation.

I have spent considerable hours searching forums and googling. I have yet to find out what "lm-sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1:" is actually looking at. I have an Abit IP35 motherboard with Ubuntu 9.04 installed.
Here is the output from sensors:
Virtual Device Temp 1 keeps going up to 121 degrees and the computer shuts down. None of the others overheat. Also, my bios does not show my voltages to be set like it lists above. The bios in the motherboard is the latest from Abit.
