Ubuntu :: Vino Won't Start After Adding Secondary X / Fix It?

I have recently added a second screen and uses separate X screens as my x screen settings. No xinerama. After adding the display Vino refuses to start. IIRC using dual X screens with xinerama works as expected.
Starting it manually results in code...
Is it even possible to use vino with two server-side x screens? I would be perfectly happy with only one X screen exposed via VNC if it is impossible in the VNC client to choose which X screen to connect to.

I have a dual monitor display with my Ubuntu 10.04 x64 setup and I need to configure Vino to default to the secondary monitor (which is actually screen 0.1). Does anyone know if this is possible?

If user1's main group is genetics and one wants to add him/her to group biochem and to assign biochem as his/her secondary group will the following suffice ?

I would like for user1 to have genetics as the main group but also belong to biochem. When user1 creates a file, as he/she belongs to main group genetics, I assume the file will be owned by user1 and group owner will be genetics. Ideally files created by user1 should be accessible to users in group genetics(when permissions are tweaked) but not by individuals in group biochem. However, any files with group owner biochem should be accessible to user1 as he/she does belong to biochem as a secondary group. Would having user1 main group genetics, secondary group biochem fulfil this criteria ?

I have a CentOS 5 server with a 250gb hard drive running close to the maximum space on one of the partitions. 87% of 200gb (/home), roughly. I have a second 250gb hard drive which is completely unused. I just recently did some searching through the forums here and found out about LVM and wanted to implement it. Although the downside is I believe it has to wipe a drive/partition before it can add it as a logical volume.
The process I'm considering following is:
1. add this empty 250gb (SDB) secondary hard drive as a logical volume on LVM and copy everything over from the currently filling up partition on my main hard drive.
2. have LVM add in the old partition on the primary hard drive (SDA)
3. extend my logical volume out to include the old partition. Extending my total hard drive space out to 450gb.

How do I add a script to rc.local to run at bootup?? I've few .sh files, service files and .cgf files. The service files are fine but the .sh file didn't startup at the bootup. I've included the .sh and cfg file as below:

I have a Linux box with Ubuntu 10.4 that I use basically to play music and download files. It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard, the only way I access it is using Ultra VNC. Yesterday, the automatic update service offered to update Vino (among other things) to version 2.28.2 and, as usual, I accepted.
After the update Ultra VNC has had trouble negotiating the protocol with Vino. The only way I got it to work was to force using Tight as the compression method, which provides a crappy image quality. Besides that, at some unexpected moment, the connection just dies.
Can anyone help me to:
1.- Solve this issue with the current Vino version or
2.- Go back to the previous version that was working perfectly.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on an older desktop and when I first installed Ubuntu I set up Remote Desktop Vino services and was able to connect just fine with my Windows XP, Windows 7, Leopard, Snow Leopard PCs and my iPhone using VNC all just fine. So I apply updates to my Linux box and now it's broken. I can not remote into my Ubuntu machine at all now. So something with the updates is broken. I don't really use my Ubuntu machine at all, all it is used for is for a dedicated Folding@Home server. I attached a screenshot as what my Remote Desktop settings look like.

I have a fileserver running debian 6 and I would like to be able to remote control it over VNC. I have enabled Remote Desktop in Gnome and it works, however I have to be logged into Gnome for it to work. Gnome doesn't enable vino before a user is logged in for some reason. This presents a problem as there is no keyboard or mouse connected letalone a screen.
I looked up the issue on google and found this: [URL] Long story short, I have to edit /etc/gdm/Init/Default and insert "/usr/lib/vino/vino-server &" just before 'exit 0' at the end of the file, and change "KillInitClients" to "false" in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. I edited the first one as it says, but I can't find gdm.conf anywhere. I did however find a 'daemon.conf' in the /etc/gdm directory, and added the line there.
When I try to connect after doing the above, my vnc viewer (client) just disappears - no errors, message, sound - nothing. It doesn't even ask for a password. I checked the comments in the link, and the second to last comment suggests it's because of some negotiating-issue which should be an easy fix:
Turned out I had to enable connections to vino not related to my user account. To do this run sudo vino-preferences and duplicate the settings instructed here

I've noticed that after updating opensuse to 11.2 from 11.1 vino is slighly different by its layout. Is there big changes in vino?My problem is that when I connect to vnc (from windows with tightvnc viewer), it asks password normally, and let me log in, but when the screen has "rendered" from up to down, it doesn't update it any more. It let me move the mouse, and if I test it locally from other computer in LAN, I see the mouse moving and text appearing when typing and windows moving when moving, but no changes in vnc viewer screen! I mean it doesn't update the differences at all.What could be the problem? I tried out realvnc as well, but it seems it is not in the viewer. Is it in vino? I have correct ports open and so, just like before. It worked in 11.1 but not in 11.2

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday on a headless home server. I use the server for a variety of purposes, and what I don't know how to do via SSH I've alway been able to do through VNC. However, since the upgrade vino-server will no longer run if there isn't a monitor attached. Before it used to start up without a problem. Even by attempting to run the server via SSH gives me a "could not load display" error. Summary: I need to get vino-server running at boot time on a server with Ubuntu 10.04, without a monitor attached.

I usually remotely connect to a client server to make adjustment via the CLI.Occasionally I have to login into the desktop to understand some issues that my customer are trying to explain via Vino-Server. I have notice that sometimes when I attempt to login via ssh, I sometimes can see that a user has not logged into the GUI desktop which means that I cannot login into the remote desktop session to resolve any issues via the GUI. My question is:How can I remotely login via ssh and start a gnome or kde session for the user account that I am trying to resolve his or her issue?

Does anybody know how to bypass needing the password for this? I'm not sure how to begin to figure this out. I've been a longtime Fedora user and vino worked fine there so I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work.

my OS is SuSE 11.2 with gnome.Remote administration is active.The VNC-session then connects to the login-screen and after login opens a new desktop.How can vino be configured to attach to the desktop that is already running. (Ubuntu does that per default so it should be possible with SuSE too)

I've got an ASUS eee1005 that I'm trying to load eeebuntu -- I've read good things about it! However, I managed to get it (partially) installed using only unetbootin and the eeebuntu-nbr iso. Luckily I've got other working laptops in the house, or I'd be stuck because now I've got a partially installed distro that isn't allowing me usage of my wireless. Basically, what I'd like to do is be able to go back to the install process and load all the packages I want, which, hopefully, will give me NetworkManager so that I can finally connect. I can boot to the thumbdrive (8gig, btw) but I don't think I've got the right files on it to do the install. Here's what appears on the thumbdrive:

I would think that with these files on the thumbdrive, it could find its way into the install process. Apparently not. I've read most, if not all of the 'install from USB' threads and how-to's, and it's still not working right - Now, having a partially installed distro (with GUI that's not GNOME, or KDE. . ?) Are there any options I can use to pickup where the install left off and start adding packages? Or should I just scrap it and re-install?

I'm trying to connect to my server (to the gnome session) using vnc. I run vino-server on debian
I get pass the authentication (configured none) but I get a blank screen instead of my session.

I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on my server about 2 weeks ago, I setup remote desktop and figured to just leave the password field out as it suppose to be pre-configured to only accept local connections, well, apparently not. I was noticing some strange network activity and checked my router connections and sure enough I see port 5900 to the server, open vino icon and see that there is someone else connected! (IP of unauthorized user: 77.29.51.239 ).. Immediately kick them and set a password. This should really be addressed and/or a password should be defaulted or at the very least the "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network." should be removed.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an old HP Pavilion 710 PC, dual-booting with WinXP. I followed instructions and successfully partitioned my primary hard drive, and installed Ubuntu just fine (I think--everything seems to work, anyway).
Here's my partition setup:

The secondary disk is strangely set up for unrelated reasons, and I haven't done anything to it since moving to Ubuntu. My plan is to keep most of my data on that disk, and use the primary disk for system files and applications, but I don't yet understand how Ubuntu decides where to keep things, so I haven't done anything with that disk yet.
Here are my questions:
1. I want to run a MySQL database locally, to test a php/MySQL web site I'm developing. I thought it would be a good idea to set aside a partition just for the database, which is what /dev/sda7 is supposed to be; but I have no idea how to make Ubuntu or MySQL use that partition. (I'm also brand spanking new to MySQL, or I'd probably know.) How do I do that?
2. It occurs to me now that I ought to put the database on my secondary hard drive, which is much bigger and faster than the primary. If the answer to #1 doesn't tell me, how do I do that?
3. My home directory is on /dev/sda right now. Can I move my data files to /dev/sdb without moving the whole home directory? Or must I move everything and keep it all together in one directory?

I have an HP computer which I recently installed Ubuntu on with a secondary HD that I installed. I set this new hard drive as the primary hard drive and it was working fine booting up GRUB and asking if I wanted to use Windows 7 or Ubuntu. This morning, however, it has stopped doing this and goes straight into Windows 7. If I go into the boot menu and tell it to boot with the primary hard drive it will go into GRUB, but otherwise it seems as if it is going straight to my secondary HD with Windows 7 on it. This seems weird since up until today it was working fine.
Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? I tried reinstalling Ubuntu but that didn't change anything.
