Ubuntu :: VMWare - Hitting Error During Installation / Sort It?
Nov 13, 2010
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the package and am following this guide: http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-ins...on-ubuntu-9.04
While I'm running through the installation wizard via the terminal, i hit an error at this step:
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] code...

I am trying to install VMware 2.5 and when I run the rpm i receive the error: error: Failed Dependencies: /bin/sh is needed by VMware-Player-2.5.3-185404.i386
How can make this dependency? I have already tried linking it and I even tried using the rpm in the /bin directory, where /bin/sh is located.

Now when i tried to go back to gnome by pressing
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-F5 it didnt work !! i tried all other combinations
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-(F1-F5) but no response.

I have Vmware Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) running on my MacBook Pro. I installed Fedora 11 on the fusion and it works fine. The only problem that I am having is that when I try to install vmware tools, by runnning ./vmware-install.pl in the terminal, I am prompted with this message: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
If I press Enter, the same message pops up. I am fairly new to linux, and I am just setting this up so I can set up a web server on this virtual machine for testing purposes.
the kernel that I have running is:
root@box1 include# uname -r
2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAE

I recently removed Spotify using the Wine remove software function. When I try to reinstall Spotify using the "Spotify Installer.exe" I just keep getting the famous "NSIS error" (without any error code, it's plain NSIS). When I try to run the "Spotify Installer.exe" through a terminal it gives me:
wine: cannot find L"unix\home\user\Desktop\Spotify Installer.exe"
Any help in this bloody mess is much appreciated since I can't (I hope no one can) live without music.
I'm running Ubuntu Natty 11.04.

Keep in mind that I am a newbie to Fedora.
First off I have set up the PC so that it dual boots XP and Fedora 12
I have been struggling with the installation of openoffice 3.2
I have watched a tutorial on ..... where he was able to do it on Fedora 12 using the
Add/Remove Software feature just by simply typing in openoffice.org.
I have tried this multiple times and can't seem to get it working.
I have also tried using the yum command through terminal
I have been using "yum localinstall" and recieve this error
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora.

I've noticed in my Apache logs a lot of hits to a specific URL on my server. The thing is, the URL is invalid and returns a 404. Every hit has a different Agent ID (things like Windows NT 4 and IE 8, Mac OS and Safari, Windows 7 and Mozilla, etc) and usually a slightly different IP address. If you browse the URL with Chrome/Firefox, it gets reported as potential phishing activity - despite it only returning a 404 error.
I blocked a range of IPs with IPTables which worked for a while, but I can see the IP address has changed again (outside of the range I set) and is generating logs again.
Is it possible to automatically block any IP attempting to access this specific URL?

This sound very weird, but i'll try to explain it as good as i can. When i hit a key on my laptops keyboard, i cannot move my mouse for a split second.I can replicate this by typing and trying to move the mouse mean while.but this is very annoying if you e.g. I hit ctrl+c and trying to move the mouse afterwards or opening a tab, that the mouse just freezes for a while.

I'm trying to get a script to autostart and hitting some snags. I know the script works, because I can manually launch it from a terminal window. I've perused the forums and followed similar advice to put the script in the /etc/rc.d/init.d directory and then create a symlink in the rc5.d directory (S99my_script) I've even tried appending ". /etc/init.d/myscript" to the .bashrc file
I've managed to get the machine to autologin "myuser" upon startup (that's the owner of the .bashrc file I edited), but still the script won't start when myuser auto logs in. the system default is set for password protect on screen save so if I simple let that happen, as soon as I exit screen save the script launches, so it almost works.

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

so the safest way to go about this is to assume I know nothing. I mean, I have a rough Idea of what a kernel is, no idea what a shell is, etc. I do consider myself computer savvy, but know NOTHING about linux and thats why I'm Diving in, hopefully not too much, this is just to give you an idea of what we're working with here.
After several install attempts I kept getting a blank screen. Whether it be black, white, or the default gnome desktop (without any icons, and simple things like ctrl+alt+backspace just doesn't work, or anything else for that matter) I was ending up with a blank screen. Driver for moniter....maybe....but I did succesfully install it once, and it worked like a charm...shutdown properly, and the next day after work...Boom, same thing after startup.today I started from scratch and re-installed....samething, until I hit the power button, went from the dvd(iso) and did a fail safe, now my resolution is much better than it was the first time..Actual questions.....what did I do to fix it when failsafe never worked before?
Is there a way to save these settings, so I don't run into the problem again, because I don't even want to turn of my computer at this point? If i'm trying to dive in and learn the command line actions, is there any substancial difference between gnome terminal or hitting "c" to bring up the command line?

I get the following error each time I try to safely remove the USB stick (by right-clicking on the USB stick icon on the desktop and choosing "Remove safely") code...
It used to work without errors when unmounting the USB from Nautilus window, but now, I get the same error when unmounting from there as well. Is it safe to assume that the stick can be removed even though the error message is displayed? What might be the cause?
Also, I do not have any Nautilus-windows opened nor any applications that are locking any files on the USB stick while removing it.

I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.
getting any form of VMware tools to run in Linux and detected by VMware Workstation.

I am using a kernel of version 2.6.32 . I installed iptables of version 1.4.2 and it got installed successfully.
but while adding some rule to the iptable i faced an error like the following
iptables v1.4.2: Couldn't load target `standard':/usr/local//libexec/xtables/libipt_standard.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
i basically want to add a rule like the following
iptables -A INPUT -p icmp -j QUEUE
one more thing i would like to add post is tat
i did not find a library called libipt_standard.so in iptables folder(/usr/local/libexec/xtables)
instead i found a library libxt_standard.so
i tried renaming libxt_standard.so to libipt_standard.so
but even then i found the same error.

I recently got a new external hdd and formatted it to clear off the preloaded software seagate loaded on it for windows users. Anyway it worked fine but I realized I didn't name the drive what I wanted and since the format didn't take long at all I figured I'd do it again and name it what i meant to.
This time a message popped up and said error formatting drive
I removed it and now when I connect it, it doesn't appear to mount at all.
