Dec 7, 2010Update Manager froze during an update. Synaptic suggested I run sudo dpkg -configure -a

Mar 27, 2010I'm re-posting here since I've gotten no response in the Installation & Upgrades Forum.
While running the Update Manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. I restarted the Update Manager and still have errors.

This is not a crisis. I can re-boot and run without apparent errors. I thought about apt-get -f install but I don't understand enough. Is this a broken dependency problem? If this is a dependency problem will this (apt-get -f install) just clean-up the loose ends and then will the Update Manager pick up the pieces the next time I go through "check"? Is there possible harm doing this?
This system is at 9.10 and was up-to-date until I had this problem yesterday.

Feb 6, 2010I have been having some major issues with the update manager of ubuntu 9.10. I have had 3 instances so far where the updater froze either in the middle of updating or right after, and every time resulted in a corrupted file system. Two times it has happened to me which resulted in once having to completely reinstall and another was luckily saved by using Gparted on the live CD. But now my friend who i installed Ubuntu for has had the same problem. When it happened to me, I was forced to hold the power button to get the computer to turn off as it completely locked up the system. My friend however, was able to use the shutdown menu.

Sep 30, 2010As the title says i updated my system which then needed a reboot. I also installed Mixxx djing software to try it out. So i thought id just restart the system. Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

Jan 14, 2010I have logged in today and update manager reminds me of an update with linx-backports-module-2.6.31-14-generic. However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?

May 2, 2010I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. If I answer No, this message appears:

If Yes, it tries to download but immediately:

It has always installed the updates with no problems, until these 3 updates remain in pending installation status.

Ubuntu :: Install / Update Manager Bugged Enough To Update
Jul 11, 2010i installed Ubuntu rel 9.10 download as a first time user. all was fine until the update manager bugged me enough to update. i allowed it to download and install the updates for rel 10.04. after the update i started having intermittent GRUB errors at boot. i worked on this problem and without warning Ubuntu returned to rel 9.10. the Linux kernel is still at level 2.6.31-21. rather than do another update manager update i am considering a download of rel 10.04 and install from that. i would then have a backup for rel 10.04. my concerns are my user data i do not have a user partition. also how would the install partition my hard drive. i allowed the install to partition my 9.10 system. my current FDISK output not sure why devices show sda i thought they woud be hda hard drive??
