Is there some way to unlock more settings that what it originally starts with. Im trying to watch this ..... tutorial, and the ubuntu in the video has many more options.
View 7 RepliesI've got a computer i'm trying to VNC to.
The problem is that when the computer starts up/reboots it doesn't "Unlock the system keyring"(I think that's what it said).
When I try and attempt to connect to the computer it asks for the VNC password(as per normal) but fails to connect after that.
The reason is that the Ubuntu computer prompts for the user's password to unlock the system(locally).
What I want is to be able to turn on the computer without having to worry about entering the password. I've had it running fine on 8.04 yet the newer version seems to be annoying :s
The system is set to automatically login on startup too.
I've tried this: "delete the keyring folder under /home/XXXX/.gnome2" then setup remote desktop again. But that hasn't worked either. I still have to enter the password to a keyring
I'm trying to change some login settings, but the window won't unlock. I click the button, and nothing happens. Any ideas? I'm using 10.10.

It started when I have changed the type of ubuntu login - I have changed from gdmsetup settings from "password" to automatic authorization.
I checked the the PolicyKit Agent. It seems to working (and autostarting) with such command:
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

I am trying to get music which was originally on iTunes into banshee, such that I can transfer "ownership" from a Mac onto Ubuntu, and still sync with my iPhone 3GS. Every piece of this music came from CDs which I still own and have collected since CDs were something most people hadn't heard of, but I seriously do not want to sit there and scan in hundreds of CDs again when I already have them in digital form.
I've tried several things, including dragging and dropping from a USB stick. So I've been getting duplicates, and in the process I deleted an album in order to start over. Now I can't get that album back no matter what. It's like it's black listed or something. I can try to load it from the USB stick, I can copy the containing folder from the USB stick to some place on my hard drive, anything. It knows I deleted it once upon a time and it refuses to touch it.
I have 50 gigs worth of raw Digital Performer sd2 files originally saved on a fat32 external hd.
I don't have a spare fat32 laying around but I do have an ext3 disk (I run ubuntu 8.04 at home).
I have a feeling that saving these files to ext3 will render them unusable if they're ever transferred back to fat32.
I swear I've been burned by this before.
What would you do here?
Tar them first? A friggin dmg file?
I just installed Ubuntu Server, I'd like to try out other desktops interfaces.When I originally tried out (wubi test drive) Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 the default desktop interface was very nice and clean...plus it seemed to render screen fonts very well I currently have Kubuntu Plasma interface installed.Can I use that Ubuntu Desktop on Ubuntu Server?If so, how would I go about installing it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
So I have an external hard-drive, and I want to run the setup for the unlock.exe (allows access to the drive), but when I go to wine it, I get this message: "The application has encountered an unexpected error and is now exiting."

I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.

For example, when opening an .mp3 in VLC and checking the information, I am able to see and edit extra info that I do not see when simply right clicking the file and selecting properties. Another example is that GIMP saves comments to images, but I have nowhere to view these comments once they are saved. I would like to see more info when checking the properties of a file, dare I say like Windows enables users to. So is there a terminal code or plugin that I can install?

I didn't know where else to place this.It's really preventing me from doing some things, such as setting up the Empathy IM program for chatting and whatnot, and this default keyring really haulting any progress I can make on that front. It also pops up when I'm just booting up the laptop. My brother set the password and then forgot, so he tried all of these passwords and it would never work. It always pops back up several moments later and reiterates its question. It goes away when I click on 'Deny', but now I can't follow that same route when trying to set Empathy IM Client up. I would like to either do away with this password requirement, or just change it to something I can easily remember
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working to connect several Ubuntu computers to a Hughs satelite radio via a Trednet switch. The ISP requires static IP addresses on our machines. Obviously, to do that I need to access the Network Manager.
When I click on the Unlock button the machines wait for a minute or so and return a "could not authenticate" message. It never prompts for a password.
When I loaded the OS on these computers in the states, there were no issues with the install or updates and configuration. Now that they have been shipped to Africa there is something which has happened to all the computers and they will not unlock.
If i reload the OS they do fine..
i tried to use empathy with my gmail account ,but when i add my account details then a messsage come and ask to enter password for default keyring to unlock. next to it the given message is:The Application 'Account Manager'(/usr/lib/telepathy/mission-control-5)wants acccess to default keyring,but it is locked. while i have never entered any password except for my user account and root account.also i don't know about default keyring and its function.

The loading also takes longer then usual. This is in lucid 64bit. I installed gnome-do the night before so i think it has something to do with that, but i really dont know what to do. I tried going into terminal (alt-f2), or killing the process with ctrl-alt-esc but they keyboard is useless (though not entirely frozen as i can turn on/off numlock etc)
Is there someway i can bypass this temporarily and then get rid of it (from bug reports ive read it seems deleting gnome-do will work)
I have it set up to go idle after 5 minutes and ask for a password to unlock, and none of these happens.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi use ubuntu 10.04.its working quite normally.i installed ubuntu tweak and compiz fusion etc.For a few days i didn't have any problem.but after some time in the case of ubuntu tweak,i am unable to press the 'unlock' button.its as if its freezed or something.nothing will happen.in the case of compiz fusion i am unable to change its settings and change the effects.the software center application which is one of the default applications, i am unable to install a thing.the install button there is also freezed.like wise i think my super powers have gone automatically.but when i checked the users and admin settings i still have the super powers and i am the administrator.so i deleted that user and made an another user.
