Ubuntu :: Unknown Package Error On Fresh Install
Sep 4, 2010
Just did a clean install on my desktop of 10.04. Net was working fine, until I installed GIMP and restarted. A little "NO" symbol pops up next to my wireless indicator, and it tells me to either do an apt-get check from terminal or start the package manager to find out what the problem is...so, I do the apt-get check.
Here's what I get returned from the terminal:
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I just completed a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop 64bit. Everything was pretty much left to defaults. When completed I enabled the partner repositories. Then ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Everything ran perfectly. When I attempted to install db2exc it failed saying it was an unknown package. I ran apt-cache search db2, but nothing came up. Was IBM DB2 Express-C package moved to a different repository or was it removed completely? Maybe a rename? I know I'm not on the up and up about this, but after doing a google search I thought I'd see something. To make sure I haven't lost my mind entirely, I installed Lucid on a test box, fresh installation, and was fully able to do the installation of db2exc.

I've been having issues with the omega.cert on Pidgin and tried to upgrade to 2.7.7 today. I clicked on the link from the Pidgin site to download the ppa package "pidgin-ppa_0.0.3_all.deb" and tried to open with GDebi Package Installer but it tells me it couldn't be opened because an unknown error occurred.

This is my first linux install, Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, and first thing I do is update. I can't update because I get this message "The package System is broken Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f"
This a brand new fresh install, how can there be problems already!?
In terminal I've tried " apt-get install -f" and get "E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?"

Sometimes httpd (the apache web server) fails to start and displays an error (98: Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80). This happens even when no other service is listening on port 80, as evident from the output of "lsof -i :80" and "netstat -A inet -lnp". This is due to a configuration file mixup. Both /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf contain the directive "Listen :80". If you comment out the "Listen 80" in /etc/httpd/conf.d/system-config-httpd.conf, httpd will again start.

I have an odd problem. I custom-built a workstation:
MSI Speedster 1 mobo
2x Opteron 2352
4x DDR2 ECC 4GB
3x 150GB WD Raptor, hardware RAID 0
1x 2TB WD Green, standalone
I had Linux Mint 8 installed, but before putting the machine to real use decided to toss Windows 7 on there to see how it worked. Now I am attempting to put Mint 8 back on to get everything set up. There have been no hardware changes since I had Mint installed before.
I can successfully install, but when I reboot I get a Grub error 17. The partition table looks like:
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
...
2TB /backup /ext3
Grub is installed to (hd0), which is the 450GB hardware RAID. It does not make a difference when I run the installation (and then reboot) with the 2TB drive disconnected. Thinking maybe the new ext4 format was messing with Grub, I tried:
200MB /boot ext2
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
And installed again and rebooted. No dice. I'd guess Grub has issues recognizing the hardware raid, except it worked before

I have a dual boot machine (Win XP + Ubuntu 9.10 on separate physical drives) which was working fine. I now want to replace the Ubuntu 9.10 with LinuxMCE which is based on Ubuntu 8.10. Using the LinuxMCE install disk, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 over the top of Ubuntu 9.10 (repartitioning the whole drive). On reboot, I now get a Grub "no such disk" error. I have run the boot info script which produced the following RESULT.txt:
Code:

I have just done a reinstall of Centos 5.3 on a dedicated server (via a KVM). My partition arrangement was the default presented to me by the installer:
As you can see, I'm using LVM for everything other than /boot (I need to use LVM for an app I am testing).
On reboot, I get the following:
[QUOTE]
It looks like it can't find vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 in /boot.
I have rebooted using the Centos Install Disk 1 and gone in to rescue mode. Rescue mode mounted my / under /mnt/sysimage, from there I could see that /boot had been mounted from /dev/sda1 as it should be.
However, there was no initrd.image or /vmlinuz-2.6.18-128.el5 under /boot or /boot/grub. Shouldn't the CentOS installer have created these?
Is there anyway I can recover this installation?

I have installed Centos 5.6 on a fresh VPS. After install I ran yum update command. After update was finished I noticed a message saying "Your system kernel may have been updated. Current kernel (2.6.18-238.e15) has been changed to : 2.6.18-238.12.1.e15)". When I reboot, I see two boot option in GRUB. one is Centos 5.6 (2.6.18-238.12.1.e15) Default and other is Centos 5.6 (2.6.18-238.e15). When Centos boots from default, it fails with fatal error. But when I boot with other option, the system boots as normal.
I need to know how to resolve this situation. Why yum update results in Kernel update and 2nd option in GRUB boot loader. and why Centos refuses to boot with update Kernel.

uncompression error

I've run memtest86 and the RAM passes OK, I've even tried running the install with just 4Gb RAM but without any luck. I've even tried three different CD/DVD drives.10.04 64bit runs from the Live CD without any problems, but 10.10 isn't playing ball...

After a fresh install of Debian I came across an error Im hoping you guys can help me with. Ive searched for the error and it appears there are multiple reasons that could be causing it. To compound the problem, Im at work so I dont have the specific error messages....so I just installed Lenny (standard install, no desktop) using a USB installer and everything went very smooth. On first boot, the system paused while waiting for the root file system. After a minute or two it just errored out complaining it could not find the root file system and put me at a (vmlinuz) prompt? My guess is that I need to go into my bios and change my boot priority.. but again, thats just a guess.

I am currently trying out Debian in VMware Player and I installed it using the following method.
Image Used: Debian-7.6.0-amd64-netinst
In the check list where it lets you select Debian Desktop, Print Server, and System Utilities I think it was? I deselected everything.
After Debian installed and rebooted I logged in, elevated myself to su, and entered the following commands.
apt-get update
apt-get install kdm kde-plasma-desktop --no-install-recommends
reboot
startkde
and I get the error '$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.'

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below
Code:
I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below
Code:

error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>
Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.
Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.
I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

Is the ubuntu keyserver broken? I am trying to install a package and every time I try to install the key I get a time out error.
apt-update give me
Code:
W: GPG error: [URL karmic Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 932062C9CD30EE56
Then if I try to install the key I get this?
Code:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CD30EE56
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys CD30EE56
gpg: requesting key CD30EE56 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: keyserver timed out
gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error
Can I tell ubuntu not to bother with the key. I know the package is good and safe to install. I should be the one to judge if its ok to install not ubuntu.

tl;dr - sudo make -> operation not permitted, sudo chown -R 777
* -> operation not permitted on some of the files
I am trying to install a library. Sudo make is getting permission denied on file 1, while using regular make I am getting permission denied on file 2. I have noticed some of the directories in the library are under nobody:nogroup. I tried chown and sudo chown, both didn't work. Sudo chown got permission errors, while chown didn't change ALL the files. (operation not permitted once again) Tried sudo su, and working from there, that also did not work. (permission once again). Using lsattr returned "lsattr: Inappropriate ioctl for device While reading flags on".
Code:
sudo chmod -R 777 *
chmod: changing permissions of `Makefile': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `Makefile.am': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `Makefile.in': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `queue.c': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `queue.h': Operation not permitted
chmod: changing permissions of `ucutil.h': Operation not permitted
Note the .libs folder not having write permission....
