Mar 9, 2011I am unable to play DVDs. I have installed different media players: Gnome, VLC but still no luck. I am wondering if there is something I need to do.

Feb 2, 2010when i try to play a video, from internet it is showing the message 'Either javascript turned off or download and install latest adobe flash player'. But eventhough I downloaded and installed adobe flash player I am unable to play any video and still it is giving the above message. what is the reason?

I am able to click into a game and see all the info but the play-by-play drive chart no longer displays anything. Does anyone out there know how to get this working?

May 24, 2010I'm totally unable to play or mount audio CDs and unable to use video DVD's on my box right now. When I insert an audio CD I get a dialog box saying:
Unable to mount disc: Location is not mountable
and if I check messages in the Log File Viewer I see the following text repeated (save for the last line) a couple of dozen times.

on a similar but ultimately unrelated thread someone was asked to enter a few commands so I tried them and the following was the output:

An error occurred: Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file. As far as I can tell I have the relevant CSS libraries installed I'm lost without being able to play CD's and DVD's on my system.
OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Get Sound-test To Play Sounds As Well As Connect To The Sound Device In Vmware And Play Sounds?
Nov 5, 2009I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

Jun 21, 2010I tried playing a vcd on my lucid lynx and it was giving problems. after i put the cd in the cd-rom i could see a CD icon on the desktop as well as an autoplay wizard asking it to play with Movie player.
and when i said yes it gave an error saying

now when i try i to see the cd from terminal i could find that it was mounted at
/media/VideoCD/

Jun 29, 2010When I put a DVD in my DVD drive I cannot get Ubuntu to play it, not with VLC, Enna, Boxee or Movie Player, with movie player I get "An Error Occurred Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file."
With VLC I get some very slow jerky playback that crashes when I go full screen.

Feb 17, 2011Recently pulled the plug on Windows 7 and changed completely to Linux. Don't regret it for a second and I will now stay Linux for the long haul. Just a couple of issues have emerged though....
1) All dvd's I have tried so far, do not play in Movie Player. Error message was:Location not found. (dvd file name does appear in play list though it does not play....I have let it search for plug ins and updates but the return was: Plug in not found (though it does not say what plug in was not found....which I hoped it might then I might know what it was...).
2) Vodafone MBB K3570-Z doesn't want to play ball either. Noticed no install message, not even as a recognised usb device.Looked at similar posts and tried editing, deleting and retrying. Ensured the user, password, APN, were all properly edited, but not a peep out of it.Also selected mobile broadband in network settings. But no connection at all. Also tried the usbmodeswitch too.

Jan 24, 2010this noob is generally *very* satisfied with Karmic since switching over from XP after a horrendous virus wiped out my laptop. My only problems have been with hardware devices. I'm so far unable to get Ubuntu 9.10 to play well with my iPod Classic. I *do* get an iPod icon on the desktop and can move files to it, but gtkpod will not mount it. Rythmbox sees it, but doesn't move files or playlists to it. The gtkpod 'howto' file says I should have the hotplug pkg installed, and I don't see it listed as installed OR available from Synaptic manager, and my web searches for it usually lead to a deadend 'not avail'. Sorry for the verbage. what I need to know is what files / pkgs need to be installed, how do I know if they are on my system, and where do I find them if they are not? I'm assuming my iPod is not mounted correctly but it could be another issue of course.

Mar 13, 2010I'm able to open DVD data discs, it's just playing DVD movies which is the problem now.
I've followed the official ubuntu guide on this and it hasn't worked. Even with all the numerous posts regarding the matter I'm still unable to find a fix.
Thus I'm posting here. If I can't get this to work I'm fooking back off to Windows because I've wasted far too many hours as it is.
I'm running P4 2.4 Ghz, NEC 2500a DVD-RW drive. I've also got two other DVD drives, a Pioneer slot drive which I get the exact same problem and another one which I haven't tested yet as it appears to be a software problem.

I also added handbrake and VLC, because I would like to rip my DVDs and I understand that I need libdvdcss.
I've followed various instructions on the forum for adding files from Medibuntu, but I still can't even play back a commercial DVD.

May 5, 2010i have just installed 10.04 64 bit onto my computer.I then used the command sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras to install adobe flash it seemed to work untill i went to use the play button in the window.It will not allow me to use the buttons in the window to play or pause etc,i tried to use a different site (cisco.netacad.net)which requires flash and all works well until i try to select a chapter or launch anything.I am at a loss some one told me it might be a javascript problem in firefox is this tru i have to read my cisco chapters and i cant afford windows and i like this ubuntu release.

Jun 4, 2010I am currently trying to play a VC-1 encoded MKV-file under Linux (Ubuntu 10 / latest Mint, both are affected), but VLC reports that it isn't able to decode WVC-1. VLC is able to play this file under Fedora 13, OS X and Windows, while both mplayer and ffplay are able to play this movie under Ubuntu 10 and Linux Mint.
I made two log files that where previously posted on the VLC forum, where I was told that it looks like there is a problem with the avcodec. I have basic experience with compiling stuff, but my knowledge of C++ and the linux internals is close to null. Which packages do I need to build from source in order recreate avcodec and its dpendendcies?

Aug 30, 2010I regularly use XBMC on my htpc. Everything seems to work just fine except that I cannot watch DVDs with it. It just never detects a DVD. If I insert a DVD with XBMC running, it just lets me browse the files. If I select the video files it plays some of them (depending on the DVD apparently). If I click on the play button it says that no disk is detected. There is nothing that I can see in the log file and seems relevant. I really don't know what to do. The computer is an HP z555. I just modified it by adding more ram and I changed the video card for an NVIDIA 8400GS. It is running Ubuntu Lucid and XBMC 9.11 installed from the PPA repository. The dvds play well with totem, vlc and mplayer

Nov 7, 2010I thought I'd support Ubuntu and buy the Fluendo add-on from the app store. (I am running a fresh install of 10.10.) Whenever I put in a commercial DVD I get an "an error has occurred" message. How do I go about fixing this? I was under the impression that the ubuntu restricted extras would break fluendo, which is why I did not install them. Although during the install I did tell it to download the extra software there.

WAN: eth0
LAN: eth1 and wlan0 are bridged (br0) together
Question 1 I am unable to play games using UDP between wlan and eth1 although it works when both stations are connected to eth1
Question 2 I used ufw to help me setup IPTables but I am not really happy with this tools. Since my network configuration must be quite common, point me to a regular IPtable setup script or give me the rules I should add?

It plays normally in VLC and SMPlayer, but I want to be able to play TTA files in Clementine. I've been able to do so before I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer. I've tried installing ttaenc-3.4.1 from source, and nothing changed. I also tried installing ffmpeg-0.6.1 from source, but that didn't help either.
