Ubuntu :: Thunderbird 3.1.5 And Lightning 1.0b2 Incompatible?

I am running lucid with Thunderbird 3.1.5 (32 bit) and trying to install Lightning 1.0b2. Whenever, I install Lightning, I cannot restart TB, if I drop it. No error message. I have to start TB from the Terminal with "thunderbird -safe-mode", remove Lightning, and then everything works. I read of others having problems with TB and Lightning, but most of these are 64 bit. I am 32 bit. Please note that I have removed all other extensions from TB, but I still can't run Lightning.
One concern I have is that even though Synaptic says that TB 3.1.5 is install, the Help>About says just TB 3.1. It doesn't include the ".5". I am concerned that despite what Synaptic says, I might not have version 3.1.5 installed. Is there any way to check if I really have version 3.1.5 installed? I tried to install the latest nightly build of Lightning, but I got the error message "Lightning 1.0b3pre could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 3.6.10". how to get Lightning to run with Thunderbird?

I'm running Thunderbird/3.0.10 on Lucid 10.04, there does not seem to be a Lightning add on available for this version. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to get this up and running?Otherwise I like 10.04 and intend to stick with it till the next LTS release as I need a stable desktop environment.

With the most recent upgrade of Thunderbird to 3.0.9 I was unable to find a 64-bit version of the lightning calendar plug-in. I tried compiling my own copy of thunderbird v3 from source (3.0.10pre) and it loaded into 3.0.9 perfectly! Rename the attached files to drop the last ".bz2" (files should end in ".00" and ".01") then combine both files with the command

If you want to try compiling your own copy instead, just read the websites quoted in the header to ensure you have all dependencies then simply run this batch file

Have just installed Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick 64-bit - works fine. Using xul-ext-lightning (lightning 1.0b2) with a symlink for local.sqlite to the same on the Windows 7 64-bit partition, I can have the same calender on both partitions.
I also have a Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid LTS 32-bit partition and I would like to do the same, but cannot do it. When trying to install lightning 1.0b2 I get the message "not compatible with Thunderbird 3.0.10". So I disable the compatibilityCheck and it installs okay. But the calendar does not show any data with the symlink. Why is that? Different sqlite versions?? Or is it so that the 64-bit data cannot be read by a 32-bit program??
So I try older versions of lightning.xpi - no luck. After some additional googling I try installing Thunderbird 3.1.6 32-bit using Ubuntuzilla. Compatibility OK with 1.0b2 but still no calendar data using the symlink.

I was trying to install Lightning as an add-on with Thunderbird.
After doing some reading I was not the only one having some problems,
To Install Lightning, I needed Thunderbird 3.1, and installed on my system is 3.06.
When I did that I now get this message,
W: Failed to fetch [URL... 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I've been wrestling with the whole Thunderbird, funambol and lightning compatibility issue for some time now, and was excited to come across this link that had the steps to compile both thunderbird and funambol for 64bit linux so they'd work nicely together.So I followed those steps, and got them both working together, and syncing contacts.I then went to get my calendar back up and running, and can't for the life of me find a version of lightning that will install successfully. Does anyone know if this is even possible at this stage, and if so, where I can find a version of lightning?I now have:
Thunderbird(Lanikai) 3.1.6pre
Funambol 1.0b4
Ubuntu(64bit) 10.04

The version of Thunderbird which is in openSUSE 11.3 is 3.05. Alas, the Lightning add-on only works with Thunderbird 3.1+. I use this add-on a lot!
I'm very tempted to just download Thunderbird 3.1 and install it, but I'd rather "keep it in the family" and have zypper managing the updates etc. Is 3.1 in the pipeline for openSUSE 11.3???

in my home folder i have the /.thunderbird folder, and in this folder i have the profile. ini, i have changed some things in this ini folder so that i can put my data on another partition. now i have installed lightning, i wonder where that data is installed ?
are all extesions of thunderbird installed and safed under the directory specified in the profile.ini ? or does lightning safe the appointments somewhere else.

I have thunderbird-lightning rpm installed but it doesnt show up in thunderbird. In fc11 with thunderbird 2 it was on the left bottom of the screen I think. I checked all the settings tabs but I can't find any reference to lightning. Is this a bug or is there something I have to do to see it? For now I'm using the standalone app sunbird but I really like to have the integrated lightning back in thunderbird. I also tried the lightning plugin from the plugins tab but it complains it's not compatible with gcc3 or something so I guess that's why there is a rpm package.

I'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.

How come mozilla lightning did not made into the repos for Lucid? My only chance is to download it from mozilla? I am using Lucid 32 bits. So. I did it, downloaded lightning-1.0b1-tb+sm-linux.xpi and installed fine:

However, none of the calendar functions are working, calendar itself opens, but no grid lines are displayed. When I click on an invitation for an event, nothing is shown as body, no options to accept or decline, and the message is not marked as read. How can I workaround it? I tried mozilla daily ppa but no luck, erased .thunderbird profile, no luck. What else can I try?

I would like to install Lightning (version 1.0 beta 1) but I get the following error : Lightning" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Thunderbird build type (Linux_x86_64-gcc3). Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

A new open source package called Lightning Rod will help to close security exploits in Adobe's dirty Flash code. A presentation made at the 26th Chaos Communication Congress showed that the package does its job by reviewing incoming code before the browser executes it. Heise Online is reporting that this method can block over 20 different known attacks and can even be used to filter out malicious JPG attacks. As more vulnerabilities are discovered they can be added to Lightning Rod to close the breach.

By default, ubuntu is using an incompatible resolution for my monitor. It happens while booting and logging in. It is due to it using a Hz setting to high for the monitor.What can I do to fix this?

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

I installed Ubuntu 5 days ago....looked great....seemed to offer everything I want. Then I clicked on the firefox icon and it brought up Google ...Great!....Then I said ..this is easy..I'll have a look at my share-trading dynamic platform. Searched for Commsec and clicked 'launch Webiress'...and then it hiccupped! I got a message saying I needed Java "Now downloading".....Okay I've had this happen in windows...no problemo.. Then I tried to follow the instructions contained on the download page from Java....thats what started my five days (30 hours now and counting) of misery.
Finally on one of the hundreds of Ubuntu pages I've read I found that there is a bug in java....that prevents it from working with the Firefox that Ubuntu provides. So I cleverly removed firefox ....and went to Mozilla and downloaded a new version 3.6 of Firefox.....followed the instructions at Sourceforge.net (and other places I can't remember). Now I have Firefox in a folder in 'Documents' with libjavaplugin_oji.so linked to ///java/jre.6.0_21/plugin/i386/ns7... But when I try to fire up Webiress I still get the messsage "Java not installed ...now downloading".

I am desperately in love with Linux and love writing Java programs on it and compiling them at the terminal. I love the terminal and practically everything about Linux. But I simply cannot boot into the newest kernel with my new laptop. Do you think the next Ubuntu release will address the current problem of my not being able to use the newest Linux kernel? This is a fundamental problem and cannot be worked around. I have to use an earlier version of the operating system that will eventually not be supported. What's funny is this: my 5+ year-old Toshiba Satellite laptop works wonderfully with Linux and can even connect to my mom's wireless network "out of the box."
I guess it's hard to keep up with all the different hardware configurations on the market, and I can understand that you can't expect every computer to work with Linux. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. i am not using any custom-build PC. I think the problem is just that my laptop is too new and Linux developers haven't had time to catch up with the hardware manufacturers.

The computer went into low graphics mode all by itself and then later threw a error that said incompatible processor system halted!the computer was getting really slow and made alot of noise.later the computer did something stranger..it restarted but normally when my computer normally restarts it bypasses the password page setup in bios of the computer. This time I still had to enter a password before it could reboot.Another thing...when it the ethernet cable was connected to the computer (internet connection was on) it was slow when it was unplugged it was not.I have read that unless you're running a server or something it is highly unlikeley you'll be hacked.

Update:so I can burn DVD+Rs fine. I burned Fedora 14 originally on this machine (in F13), although I'll have to check to see what kind of disks I was using.

I just installed KOffice, and all components listed with it under Office-Suite, using YaST's Add/Remove Software and I receive this error whenever I try running KWord The plugin 'kwordpart' uses an incompatible kde library (4.71 (4.71)).
KWord then does not run. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

I have two brand new (less than 60 days old) Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7016. Neither will boot the live CD of 10.10-64, but the CDs work in other computers and I have installed successfully half a dozen times off of them. I get the initial text across the top, there is a momentary splash of the Ubuntu logo with a little battery symbol, then the screen goes black with a little flashing prompt in the upper left. That is all it will do until I hard reboot it. I made the USB boot off the CD and tried that. It never gets beyond the initial text "syslinux 3.82 2009-06-09 EBIOS ..etc".
I re-installed 10.04, replacing 10.10 and everything works fine on both laptops. Several hours later (something really needs to be done about how long it takes to upgrade) when the new upgrade is complete, it will no longer boot. Of course the default GRUB menu choice is 2.6.35-22. I assume this is the kernel number. If I pick 2.6.32-25 it boots just fine and "about" says that I am running 10.10, so I am just baffled. I know how to set GRUB to boot of this option by default, but i would like to fix the problem, not put a band-aid on it.
In case someone else has this model, it uses an audio chipset I have not seen. Win 7 reports it as "Realtek High Def audio" AND "ATI HDMI Audio". Ubuntu lists two, one generic Internal Audio, the other RS880 audio device[Radeon HD 4200]. What makes it odd is that if you want to use the head phone jack to connect to an external sound system, you have to turn it on with software inside Windows. In Ubuntu, there is no corresponding software so when you plug something in, the internal speakers turn off, but nothing comes out of the headphone jack.
