Ubuntu :: Taking Backup Of Running Desktop?
Oct 15, 2010
I do use a virtualization environment using VirtualBox,Qemu. Many a times I have to format my laptop then in such situations installing again the previous programs and making same changes to the configurations is very painful. Is there some way I can make some sort of backup which I just need to install on my existing system and get all previous things immediately installed without going to install and setting of a lot of other applications and settings.

I have around 100 users. I want to take backup of files which are on desktop for every user. My user directory path is -: /home/dr/<user_name>/Desktop
1) Script has to run on a particular time everyday
2) Script has to take backup of all files present in "Desktop" directory
3) Make a tar with name "yyyy-mm-dd-desk-files"
4) Make directory outside "Desktop" with name "Desktop-Backup", if already exist then don't make this folder.
5) The tar have to moved in this folder.
6) Remove the files from "Desktop" directory. (i.e. Desktop should be empty)
7) Mail the status that "Backup Successful"

I used photorec to recover lost files and it brought up 70gb worth of files, when I was done looking through them I deleted these files. but these files still seem to be taking up my disk space. When I try to access my trash bin with root I get a message that reads...."The folder contents could not be displayed. sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": operation not supported." if I open my trash bin when I'm not in root, the bin is empty.
How do I free up my disk space?

Running first upgrade after installing 9.10.
Currently on item "Configuring linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic" and the progress bar/terminal readout has not changed for an hour or so I'd say.
Don't want to cause issues by killing it halfway through, especially as it presents an opportunity to learn something!

I have Kubuntu 10.10 64-bit, which was running fine until I did a bunch of apt-get software installs to permit me to compile YaWP weather plasmoid. In the process I am now at KDE 4.6.2, and my system is now non-functional, not able to start KDE desktop.
When KDE starts I get continuous krunner segfaults, krunner is taking 100% of the CPU, the desktop is there but the system is unusable. /var/log/messages is filled with the krunner segfaults, each line further indicating "error 4 in libkio.so.5.6.0". I tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, problem remains.
I expect I have created some software incompatibility with my installs, but I do not know how to diagnose/resolve.

First problem:
apt-get --purge remove ubuntu-desktop
Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
Reading state information...
Package ubuntu-desktop is not installed, so not removed
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.

I have been trying to set up PC up to do automatic backups using a script I developed and anacron. The script runs perfectly when I run it manually in bash, but won't run through anacron. I followed all the advice on CronHowTo etc etc and are at a loss for why this is not happening. Here is my anacron tab (new bits in blue):
SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
# These replace cron's entries
1 5 cron.daily nice run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily
7 10 cron.weekly nice run-parts --report /etc/cron.weekly
[Code]...

I have cronjob that uses rsync to back up to a remote directory every hour. how do I set this rsync up so that if initial process is running already, it prevents running same rsync command and checks again in next hour until the process is finished/terminated?

A question that I've asked myself (and google) many times but never got to an answer.Scenario:ServerA) postfix Primary MXServerB) postfix Backup MXAccording to the rfc a source mailserver can decide where to send email e.g.send an email to backup even is primary is reachable up and running. So my questions are: 1) how do I (live I mean) replicate messages arrived on any server to the other?2) How do I synchronise sent messages, message deletion, folder creation/deletion.Imapsync goes half way towards the solution but it needs to be run manually one off and you must specify source and destination. All I wanted really is a user to be able to use either server without having to worry about primary/secondary or what so ever.

I need to backup my active production servers (yeah it's too late now) with image cloning application that were running RHEL3-5. The problem is I need to run it remotely from my office. Most of the software I found either need to use bootable cd or need to unmount my partitions which is I wasn't allowed to since it's a production servers. I also tried dd but it consume too much time, sector by sector cloning and empty disk space also included so the file created also big in size.

i'm looking for a reliable program to do backups to my desktop.(from the remote linux server....to my desktop )Preferably an FTP program that I can login to with Root access.... but most importantly, a program that will only copy over changed / new files after the first full backup. Thats the biggest problem I have currently.. when i do it with WinSCP, I usually backup the WHOLE entire /vhosts/ directory each and everytime. And its 2 GB's in size....takes forever when copying to desktop. I would only like changed / new files to be copied over after the first full backup.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64. I log in to the machine using nfs. For a problem with mounting my home directory, I had to copy all the contents of my home directory (including all configuration files) from a recent snapshot on to itself. That is, I did something like,
Code:
cp -r /home/user/user /home/user
All of my recent data and program configurations were in /home/user/user. So after the copy operation, I logged out and logged back in again to see that all my configuration and data was restored to what I wanted. But the problem is that now on my desktop I see hundreds of mounted volumes. These are coming from an hourly/weekly snapshot program. The tech support guys for my lab have suggested copying all relevant data to a backup and then deleting the home directory altogether. But I don't want to configure all programs all over again. I think I should be able to get rid of the problem by editing/deleting one or more desktop configuration files. I just don't know which ones. I tried looking around the gconf-editor but was overwhelmed at the amount of information on there.

I've just got a few questions about the last steps of my backup server. I've got ubuntu server 10.10. The 2 machines I want to backup are a xp desktop and win7 laptop. All connected via router. I have sshd, samba server and rsync packages installed on the server. I don't want all 3 mirrored so should each comp have it's own partition on the server or could it be setup as /media/desktop and /media/laptop?
Currently the server firewall is setup with ufw as deny all incoming allow all outgoing. I want to use ssh with rsync and samba so do I only need to leave port 22 open and allow a max of 2 connections at at time as fire wall rules? Also what do I need to do with permissions on windows? Do I just enable sharing on the files I want backed up? Can I only allow sharing with the server and no other computers? Last question for now I think, I will be backing up from the server as local and the windows machines as remote, what software do I need to install on the windows machines to allow backing up with rsync and file sharing with samba.

I have an old pc currently running ubuntu server 9.10. It was configured during install to connect to the home wifi router by a PCI ethernet card, which worked all well and good. However, at the moment I cannot connect to the router (I have moved the machine too far from it). I want to connect this machine (desktop) to the server so I can SSH into the box and backup some files. I need help creating a simple wired network connection between the two, as I have no clue as to where to start.

I am under orders from She who must be obeyed that I must fully backup her data as she had a loss of information due to a hard drive failure.Presently I am having her make available her info as shared documents on her XP system and I am copying this data over to my Ubuntu (Karmic) desktop. I would also like to have a USB Hard Drive save the information in order that I can safely store this away from a live system.
So far things are working not too bad but She wishes to have all her backup that was available on DVDs and salvaged from posted material assembled as one complete resource. I can with some effort put this into some semblance of order but do not feel like doing the work twice.I would like some method of easily copying / transferring data to the external HD. Additionally I would like to be able to update data daily and be able to with minimal effort have this synced onto the external HD.

I currently have a centos 4.4 I believe running with a 250GB hard drive. I want to make an image of that hard drive. I have tried removing the drive and connecting it to my windows pc using an adapter that would allow my windows machine run the hard drive as it was a regular external hard drive. Of course windows doesn't reconize that drive since it is linux partitioned. I am thinking that I need to have the hard drive inthe box I am wanting to copy and put in a blank drive in the box that I want to copy to. And boot from a live CD and use cat or dd to copy it. I have seen the commands before bust I am thinking this is the only way. Basically I am wanting to have a duplicate of the drive and build a whole new server that is already all setup.I will just change the host name and assign it another Public facing UP. Is this correct? Oh, and the new server will have different hardware. Might even be AMD or intel different from source or destination.

I am trying to share files from a desktop running Ubuntu 11.04 so that they may be seen from a Laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 which are on the same network.
I have tried installing Samba, which worked fine until i replaced windows on the laptop with Ubuntu. then the Laptop would not recognize any computers on the network. as i tried to search through the forums and solve the problem myself i think i may have also edited my smb.conf file in a way that it will no longer allow me to share the folder ( which used to be shared) on the desktop.
EDIT: if it helps when i right click on the folder, and try to create share i get: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot convert name "everyone" to a SID. Invalid parameter.

When I'm running the laptop on battery the desktop freezes. It doesn't matter what program I use, it also happens when I just boot the system login and do nothing. I then have no mouse, no keyboard - so no key combination works. The only thing I can do is turn the laptop off using the power button and turn it back on. Usually the desktop freezes with in 5 min after login, but I also had one case were I was able to work for about 2 hours. When I plug in the power supply everything works fine.

I want to put Ubuntu on my 16 gb USB thumb-drive so that I can use Ubuntu on any computer willing to boot from a USB drive (at my office, my wife's desktop, etc.) I cannot find how to do this. All my search attempts show me how to put an "install disk" onto the USB thumb-drive using the command: System -> Administration -> Startup Disk Creator
I tried the above. The first time I booted from the thumb-drive it asked me whether I wanted to try using Ubuntu from the thumb-drive or install. Having to make that selection with each boot would be a slight pain, but not a deal-breaker. But then the thumb-drive OS detected my laptop's wireless card, asked to install a driver, and then asked to reboot. Now it does some odd blended boot where it skips my hard drive's Grub Loader (so it *is* still booting off the thumb-drive) but goes to my hard drive's account sign-in. How can I make a USB thumb-drive that boots Ubuntu Desktop just as a normal hard drive, with accounts and the ability to install drivers and new software?
