I'm trying to duel-boot Win 7 and Ubuntu. When I go into the installation of Ubuntu it tells me "No other Operating Systems Found" and tells me to erase disc, or do something else. Now, I'm not the smartest when it comes to dealing with partitions and all of that. So my question is, how do I fix this? I want to alongside Win 7 with Ubuntu.
View 6 Repliesfinding / mapping network shares on Win 7 guest in vmware. I am running 10.10 64 bit ubuntu and installed vmware workstation 7 (64 bit version). I created and installed win 7 (ultimate) vm. everything is good so far. The issue is I have a second desktop with ubuntu and I have shared 4 drives on that desktop. I want those shared available to the win 7 guest. And even after enabling the shared folders I do not see them.
Note: I have a shared folder on the same machine where I have vmware installed and win7 has assess to that drive.. its just that the shares on network are not available. Note2: i had virtualbox installed and it worked fine.
I have a new 1.5TB external hard disk and I want to format it for use with large media files, which I can read/write to and from in both Linux and Windows 7.What are thye recommendations?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo far my experience with Ubuntu has been using it in Virtual-Box and as a Live CD and Live-USB. I currently have laying around a CPU/GPU/PSU so i bought the rest missing to build a new computer. I got two hard drives (640gig for Win 7 & 80 gig for Ubuntu). I have been told on [H]ardForum . com to use WUBI. That its not necessarily great for long term usage, but its best to use WUBI, get the hang of Ubuntu and dual booting and all that...and then eventually to try a more permanent solution.
For now i am curious is there anything i should know before I start? I bought Win7 64bit so i want to use Ubuntu 64 bit as well correct?
Are using WUBI and going into the Boot-Menu and starting using the 80gig HDD with Ubuntu on it, two different options? If so which is better in your opinion?
Btw to install WUBI , do i install windows, put in the CD and click install WUBI which auto pops up, and follow directions and just make sure to have it install Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on the 80gig hard drive?
One last thing, i have seen screen caps of a menu (that looks like a boot menu before you enter your OS) that has options like "use memtest to test your memory" and "Check Ubuntu CD for errors" ....how do i get to that? I would really like to be able to do both of those things.
I'm gonna setup a dual boot with Windows 7 on my system. My partition layout will be something like this:
Win7 -> ntfs
Ubuntu (root + home) -> ext4
Swap
Data (media & documents) -> ?
What file system should I choose for the data partition? If I go with ext3/4 it seems I can access them from Win7 using a file system driver, but it seems far from safe, from what google tells me. The driver installers aren't for Win7, and I need Ext4 without extents or an ext3-fs with an inode size of 128 to make it work at all. It saddens me to ask, but should I just go with NTFS?
1. What can I use to read/write to my ext4 file system in Win7 x64? 2. I use Macbuntu. Is there any way to get a translucent top bar 3. My computer seems to be running hot while on Ubuntu. The fan speed seems increased. It goes back to normal on Windows though.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHardware issue forced me to restore Win7. Installed EasyBCD to boot into openSUSE, no work. Boot puppy, it shows space where SUSE should be as unallocated space. I think Puppy doesn't see ext4 though. Can't boot live KDE off USB for some reason, though I originally installed from that exact medium. Tried ACPI=off and nomodeset. Error says trouble mounting clic filesystem, mounted as read only. Something like that. Then reboot 120secs, which it never actually does. I don't want to reinstall SUSE if I don't have to.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had a machine that dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. This past weekend I thought I'd upgrade to 10.04. I obviously selected the utterly wrong set of selections when prompted during installation to pick partitions for GRUB2 to manage. I am sorry I can't say what I picked, but I can tell you the results:
* Ubuntu 10.04 boots fine
* Windows 7 just blinks with a flashing cursor in the upper left
* I do have my Win 7 install disc and used the "repair" option and the command line commands, but the repair disc does NOT see any valid Windows partitions... no C:, nothing. I can't run the various repair options I've seen online because there's nothing to run it on.
* I can see the Windows partition when booted under Ubuntu... all the data is still apparently there.
* I've seen various threads about restarting with the LiveCD and re-running GRUB2 but am not sure I've seen a definitive page on how to re-run GRUB2 and what to select once I've done so.
I would be happy to get both Win 7 and Ubuntu bootable, but barring that, I would like to get Win 7 back with everything intact. If the easiest path forward is to reformat and reinstall Win 7, that's less fine but doable -- I've backed up what I can via Ubuntu to an external drive.
i installed ubuntu after windows 7 but now i cant boot windows 7 i tried the start up repair and I've read through some questions answered on here and int figure out the problem i don't want to uninstall ubuntu unless it's my only option

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?
Ristretto is starting with my Xubuntu... My pc has only 125MB of RAM... Is there a command to prevent ristretto of starting with the system? Are there any other ways to let my xubuntu faster?

On the very last step when Pre upgrade reboots my computer it just goes straight back into Fedora 14. No choices (Fedora 14 or Fedora 15 Upgrade Kernel) are shown.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am currently looking for a file system that needs to be distributed over several nodes and need redundancy, like RAID5, and the ability to grow if needed, like LVM. Also not all nodes are going to be located in the same data center, but I guess that's not that important as long as the connection between DCs is sufficiently fast. I am currently looking at AFS, Coda, GFS and OCFS to see if they have what I need.
Edit: I just figured that it may be better to have the RAID5-like setup within one location, and have RAID1-like mirroring between the locations. That would probably better for performance, right?
i am not able to start gnome desktop though most gnome applications work in icewm and xfce4 newly installed. the system config edit button i cannot understand what keys where to edit? how do we reinstall gnome fully? by the way my system is

I've been using Ubuntu 11.04 from my USB-stick for about 2 weeks now and I really enjoy the OS. So I ran Wubi in windows a couple of times resulting with the same problem after rebooting and showing a error "no root file system is defined" during the finishing stage of the installation.
I did the bootinfoscript and it shows that mounting failed.

I have some video files that I want to watch from my Win7 partition. Also, have they fixed the login screen issues with Ubuntu 9.10 yet? Mine will never log in and this time I simply got lucky and it worked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI can be somewhat long-winded at times and I'd rather give a full account of the problem I've always used windows as an OS but have been curious about Linux for a while now, so after looking around online I decided to try ubuntu. I have an Asus EEE PC netbook that came with win7 already installed on it. Last night I downloaded the netbook edition of ubuntu via their website, burned the .iso to a disc via my external dvd drive and then ran the demo. I couldn't get it to boot off the disc when I rebooted, so I had to pick the third option which I think installed some files to the computer in order for me to be able, to run the demo. When it finished that and I rebooted, the dual boot menu came up with both win7 and ubuntu on it. I messed around with ubuntu for a few hours before deciding I wanted to keep it on my computer, so I ran the full installation and selected the side-by-side installation. I remember when the installer asked about the partitions. I wasn't sure what to do as I wanted to keep both windows and ubuntu. There were three options: 1. Install them side-by-side choosing at startup 2. Erase and use entire disk 3. Specify partions manually (advanced). I wasn't sure how much space to allocate ubuntu, so I chose the first option thinking that it would just give me a default amount and would probably be plenty to effectively use the OS. After installation, it asked if I wanted to continue testing ubuntu or reboot and start using the full version. I rebooted, and it gave me no option for windows 7. In addition to this, the update manager came up and told me there were some 200 or so updates available. This is always common with windows when you use it for the first time, so I tried to update, and an error came up telling me that I needed at least +500mb free space for the update and only had 400mb or so. I'm a bit confused, and I've since tried rebooting several times, but windows is still unavailable.
I guess what I'd like to know is why win7 isn't listed in the GNU Grub at startup, and how I can fix that. I would also like to know how I could go about getting more disk space allocated to ubuntu. I thought about just uninstalling it, and then reinstalling it and giving myself 10-20gb of space when asked about the partitions again, but I obviously can't do that right now. The only other thing that I could think of was doing a factory restore for my netbook to get windows back, and then reinstalling ubuntu once again. I wasn't sure that would work though and didn't want to take the chance without getting the advice of somebody much smarter than me.
im dual booting windows7 professional and 11.04. win7 has an XP virtual machine installed on itm but i'd like to be able to run an xp box in ubuntu as well. is it possible to use win7's xp image and run it in ubuntu?

and there are no drivers in the list when using the additional drivers feature through ubuntu which is why i installed nvidia-current. i just want to see what this unity is about and have full scale resolution supported by virtualbox and my vcard as well as my monitor.

Here's my set-up: I've got two 500GB hard drives, and a good amount of power to handle the OS's. I want to set-up Ubuntu as my main OS on a single hard drive. Then, I want to put XP and 7 on the second hard drive, side-by-side. Obviously, I would then want a bootloader to display an option at system start to pick either one.
The reason I want all these is for gaming mainly, and Netflix. I've got old games that only work on XP, and some newer games are coming out that I'm sure will run better on Windows 7 (Starcraft 2 is going to be amazing!). I found this documentation: [URL]. It's obviously for dual booting Windows and Ubuntu. My question is, can I triple boot Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows 7? If so (and I'm positive I can) are there any good resources for the process?
I have an alienware m17x laptop with 2 hardrives, on primary is win7 and on secondary is ubuntu 9.10. The problem I have is if I boot (using Grub) into linux it crashes before the ubuntu logo pops up and locks up completely, needing a hard reset. If I boot linux again, all is fine. I can't copy the text that comes up when it crashes, is this logged anywhere so that I can post it? The same thing kind of happens in win7, on first boot (via Grub) I get the windows logo for about a second then BSOD and it reboots (so fast I can't see the error). If i boot again into win7 it boots fine.

Then I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for x64 (I use Ubuntu since 6.06 but until PC upgrade I sticked to 8.10) and since then, every now and then bot win and buntu crash for no reason at random, often before loggin in. At firsth I tought it was some problems with the shared NTFS partition, so formatted it in FAT32 but this didn't helped. Now this's my fstab:
