Ubuntu :: Super Basic Shell Script - Cannot Get Return Line
Jan 24, 2011
I'm trying to create a super simple shell script, but I cant get a return line. The shell script looks like this (only the part that matters)
Code:
yes '' | ssh-keygen
The idea being it will put in a blank char. Then enter until the program finishes. The problem is, it only does the first time, the next 2 times I have to hit enter, it requires me to input it manually (which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid).
The full script (if you care):
Code:
#!/bin/sh
# Created by Omega
# First, program creates RSA key, named id_rsa and id_rsa.pub
# Second, program send the public code to requsted server.
echo 'Removing old id_rsa key (if applicable)'
rm -rf ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub
rm -rf ~/.ssh/id_rsa
echo "Creating RSA key"
yes '' | ssh-keygen
# Checking if ssh-kkeygen created requested file
if [ -e ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub ]
then
echo 'Done'
echo 'Username and Server in: me@server format'
read var1
echo 'Port Number? If standard put 22'
read var2
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub "-p $var2 $var"
else
echo ''
echo 'ERROR, ssh-keygen did not execute correctly'
echo 'Retrying...'
echo ''
echo 'Please leave all options default (just press enter)'
ssh-keygen
if [ -e ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub ]
then
echo 'Done'
echo 'Username and Server in: me@server format'
read var1
echo 'Port Number? If standard put 22'
read var2
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub "-p $var2 $var1"
else
echo 'ERROR, ssh-keygen did not execute correctly'
echo 'Quitting'
exit
fi
fi
# End

from paul's reply in the link (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...c-code-181152/) , I am trying to retrieve the count from a shell script using option 1: below is the system call that I have used to call my shell script named "test"
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main()
{
int i;
i=system("./test 1234");
[Code]...
Here "test" is the shell script that is fetching the count from a table for a particular column("1234") that I am passing as the parameter. When the "test" script alone is run, it is returning the correct count but when trying to check through the C program it's returning some different value. How can I get the exact value from the script in my program above?

I'd like to know some good resources, links, e-books to learn basic Linux system administration scripting. I know how to write very basic BASH shell scripts so I'm still at beginner level. There are so many docs out there that I'd like to narrow down people's opinion's on the best easy to understand resources that are available. Eventually I'd like to learn basic PERL as well.

I have a user that wants to use basic math functions from the command line like sqrt and such. Apparently it was installed on the previous server we were using, but not on this new Debian server by default.
Anyone know what package has that functionality?

I'm currently on a Linux machine and the shell prompt is showing me the last return value and number of executed commands (picture included, with these numbers shown in purple).
My own computer doesn't have this, how can I configure it? I'm using Xubunto, if more details are needed let me know -- I'm not much of a Linux user (I don't know what's relevant here).

how to use the <Super>ButtonX (<Super>Button1 for example for the enabled Compiz Screenshot plugin)? I also notice there is configurable buttons 1 throught 20 under the various options. At first I thought the ButtonX was a mouse button. Maybe it is with some anticipation of there being eventually being a possible 20 buttons on the mouse. I know the Super key is the Key with the Windows logo on it. But I don't know what to do to get the needed Super Key / Button combination. After having enabled Compiz's Screenshot plugin by its default, I don't get an image after hitting any of the Super key and mouse button combinations. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

I have a program that I run from the terminal that requires manual input (it's matlab in mex debugging mode, matlab -Dgdb, which starts the GNU C debugger with its own custom settings).
Every time I run this program I always type in the same few commands in the program's interactive shell before I actually start working (for example: run -nojvm; stop at mexFunction; continue). I want to avoid typing these commands and I thought I could do this with shell scripting, saving the commands in the mycommands file, then running: myprogram < mycommands
The problem is that this runs all the commands and then exits the program. I want it to run the commands and return control to me so I can run my commands. Is there a way to tell the shell to use a file or a string as the input to a program then immediately return control to the user without the exiting the program?

I have a cron job that runs a shell script. But it only runs the first line of that shell script and not the rest of the file. I'm a little stumped as to why. If I run the shell script manually, it runs and executes every single line as it should. I think I must need some additional syntax to make this run correctly?
Here is the crontab ...
Code:
root@kchlinux:~/macs# crontab -l
# m h dom mon dow command

I am a bit confused with the first line while writing a shell script , if someone can please explain me the meaning of the first line " #!/bin/bash "the confusion for me is the # at the beginning , in shell scripting # means a comment. but in this case it loads the shell which the script must use,instead of commenting the line how is this possible. where is this defined , any particular file.

So if I have a file with a list of files:
file.txt
file1.a
file2.b
file3.c
and I wanted to perform a script using a loop or recursively on each of those files, is there any way that I could do this?
I saw that xargs might be able to help me.
Here is sorta what I want to do:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
cat file.txt | xargs?? # Some commands to turn each line into a variable
for var in ${@}; do # Some way to get each of the files
# script on each file

I am bouncing a file across platforms (windows->solaris->mainframe), and the file is starting out with a "special" character (the registered trademark "circle R") in some of the records. This character is not in the EBCDIC character set on the MF, so it is unrecognizable. The MF developer I am working with asked if it is possible to replace the character with a specific hex value (AF) before it gets to the MF.
I was putzing around with sed, tr, etc. on the ksh command line, hoping to find an easy way to get one of them to substitute hex instead of ASCII. I have found that the usual shell utilities recognize the trademark character, so homing in on what to replace is solved. But I cannot get anything to actually substitute in the hex sequence I want. E.g. I was thinking something like...
>cat special_file | sed 's/R/AF/g'
But my version of sed does not seem to have hex "editing" capability.

I'm using sed to remove certain line in a text file based on a match with 2 variables from input. Here is how it looks like in file
Philip S:Odds:45:343
Mike Junior:Odds:3:56
I prompt for 2 inputs in variable form which is compared to the first 2 fields of the above text (: seperated). So say i enter Philip S and Odds then it should delete the entire first line.

Inside a loop i'm populating a string variable. Because csh doesn't have very good support for arrays I thought of doing this. I want to add a new line character to the end of the concatenation each time the loop iterates. Then at the end print this variable out.
I tried " and some resources said it was just a "". Neither work. What am I doing wrong?
