Ubuntu :: Simple Backup Configuration Got Lost?
Jun 3, 2011
uBuntu 10.10, Simple Backup My backup stopped working at certain date. Went back in "Simple backup-Configuration", it says, there is no configuration. What might cause trouble like this? Should I seek for more secure back up tool?

After I spent some time discovering The BIG BANG of Universe and The Meaning of Life :
I managed somehow to create a script to make some backup of files on server and TAR it and then FTP the archive to another location FTP server and then emails result.
It also measures time needed to complete it and deletes archive older than XX days (set in find -mtime +20) and makes incremental backup every weekday and FULL on Sundays (which suits me bcoz no heavy load).
Files for TAR to include and exclude are in txt files listed each line separate name:
file: including.txt:

I am trying to create a backup script that will back up a single folder for a class i am in. I was wandering if I could get some help. If possible I would also like to know how to write a script that can encrypt that same file . I will be putting the back up in my /home/usr/Backup directory. I am not trying to back up my whole system just a single folder. I am using Fedora 11

i am very sorry if this has been asked before... i'm sure it has.. but i have searched all over the net looking for an answer and i still cant find it...
I have a really simple cron job script like this:
When i run this manually it works fine but when i run it from my ROOT user in Plesk as a cron task is always creates a file that is just 45 bytes. Why doesn't it work... I am running it as a root user.. so surely i must have permission to access the file?

I have a second HD in my computer for doing a backup onto. All I want is to select a couple of my documents folders and have them copied to it daily. I would like it to add new files and update newly modified ones. I don't want it encrypted or archived, just a basic copy.

I'm trying to set up a simple backup script with cron.
In "crontab -e" (and sudo crontab-e - I tried both) I enter "0 22 * * * /home/USERNAME/.backup.sh", with the hope that it will run the script at 10pm each day. The srcipt work fine if I run in a terminal. why it won't work? It's bound to be something obvious....

Here's what I want to do: Copy the whole Ubuntu 10.04 partition/installation from my old laptop to the new one.
What I tried: Used Simple backup to back up my Ubuntu installation to a USB hard drive. It yields a 10.4 gig folder containing 7 files. Installed 10.04 on the new laptop, used Synaptic to install Simple Backup, plugged in USB drive, started Simple Backup Restore, tagged the backup directory in Simple Backup Restore, and get the error:
Error: no backups found in the target directory.
I also tried copying the backup to the local drive, same difference.

I am somewhat new to Linux and I am looking for a way to back up my HD with all my Linux files. I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7. The HD has been partitioned so that the computer can run Red Hat Scientific Linux. Using Grub I can dual boot to either Windows 7 or Linux on start up. I want a simple way of backing up the entire contents of my HD (both partitions - everything) - so that in the event of my laptop being damaged I can reconstruct my set up and data as before with all my files and settings in both Windows 7 and Linux intact. Is there a simple program that will enable me to copy everything to an external HD for back up. Can anyone recommend a package that will do this?

I'm a beginner at backing up my Ubuntu system, but I've set Simple Backup to do a backup once a week. I deleted the oldest of these files, but now it's sitting in my Trash and I can't empty it. I get a permission denied error for the folders within the backup folder in the trash, yet I can't restore the folder either - Ubuntu says it 'failed to determine the original path' for the folder. I've just discovered this in Xubuntu Jaunty, but I'm confident the same will happen in any other WM I choose (I have several installed - I like variety ).
It's not a huge file, but it's hanging out there and I'd like to get it either deleted or restored. Possibly I oughtn't to have deleted it in the first place (it usually lives in /var/backup, which I can't access except as root). The files, which I probably deleted /as/ root, show up in my user trash rather than root's trash. I found the trash in ~/.local/share/Trash/files, but I'm not sure if just deleting them as root would be a good.

I really cant understand why theyre gone, but they are, maybe because I'm unorganized. Anyways, my hard drive may not be totally overwritten. Can i rescue my old data, or at least parts of it? How?

Anyone have a simple apache2 configuration file package I could get?I'm trying to serve a internal network site for files throughout my network, (music, video, etc). I remember when I did this with Redhat 5-6 and all I had to do was redirect the folder I wanted to share over apache and it worked. You could click on the file you wanted and it played, etc.For some reason I can't even get apache2 that ships with Ubuntu 10.04.02 to even have a "It worked!" internal site or anything. I haven't configured apache2 ever before. It seems to have grown from one or two configuration files to five or so!

i setup the following script ro run each night (12am) as a cron on the main server:
if mount | grep -q '/home';
then
rsync -ranv --delete /home/ 138.73.56.12:/home;
[code]....
the main server is running on a dell poweredge 2600. The script rsyncs to a virtualised duplicate running on a hp dl380. when i set this script up and begn running data started going missing from the main server. if new files had been created the files by staff they would go missing, if data was added to existing files prior to activating the script the new changes made to that file would be lost.i just cant understand why this happened. as soon as i turned the script off after a few days it was all back to normal but the data that had gone missing had gone missing.
i just wanted to know if this could be a disk read/write issue, was the script running too soon not allowing data to be written before it can be backed up? could it bee memory? i just dont know. another developed occured after a few days of all this happening, which was one of our hard disk from the main server started mis behaving and flashing amber (attention).

Debian Testing, updated daily, running Gnome.
A week ago, a new router was installed at the office and now my system "loses" the networks printers and forces me to manually select them within Cups various times a day to be able to print. The issue was not present when the old router was in place, and all my colleagues can print without problems using their Windows machines.
This only affects printing, for Simple Scan can always communicate with the printers without problems.
The printers are two basic Epson L355 (those with ink tanks) and the "official" driver (from Open Printing) has been working perfectly since I installed Debian. The whole Cups and Avahi stack is installed, and I even added system-config-printer this week to make sure that I was not missing a package.
Because the only variable that changed is the router, there has to be something there messing with my Cups or Avahi configuration.
Note that the new router had a "vanilla" installation, where no advanced settings were touched. All connected devices (computers, mobile phones, printers, etc.) are given new IP address through DHCP every day.
Where should I start? I have already deleted and added the printers within Cups several times during the week, and the problem persists. Is the router renewing the address more often than the old one did? Can this "refresh" be delayed? Should Avahi monitor devices more often?
I guess that I could configure the router and give static IP addresses to the printers, but such a setting was not present in the old router and my computer could locate the printers without problems.

I recently purchased a Wacom Bamboo CTH-460 and have had endless frustration trying to get it to work.
I started by getting the latest stable source from the Linux Wacom project and trying to compile the drivers and kernel modules from source and installing them, though nothing ever seemed to work. If I do lsmod it shows that the wacom kernel module is loaded but when I do more /proc/bus/usb/devices I end up with this:
And no matter what I try it always says Driver=(none). So that means none of the /dev/input events are getting any data from the tablet, which means there's no way for it to do anything with X. So that is the step I am stuck at.
After some time I came to suspect that perhaps the CTH-460 is too new to be supported, and am now trying to compile drivers from the lastest development source realeased on 12-30-09. It said there was support for 5 new Bamboo tablets. However when I try to make the driver I run into this error:
I'm not sure if that is just an error in the make script or not, and if it is, why no one else has said anything about it.
Maybe I'm going about this all wrong, do I even need a new kernel driver for my tablet model? Do I only need an Xorg driver? What modules and drivers need to be in place before I should at least get the tablet tied to an input event?

I have recently installed debian on to a system that I built as a media server. It has 4 1TB HDDs in the machine and each drive was partitions as follows:
10 MB /boot -md0
1 GB swap -md1
remaining / -md2
I had the /boot running as a raid 1 so i could make backups and the swap was running raid 0 for 4 GB of swap striped. The rest was all setup as a raid 5.I setup the system using mdadm and all worked out perfect. The system worked fine on reboot and all the raids showed no degration on them. However when the debian update icon came up on the screen came up I opened it and it said I needed some updates which was fine. So it did the updates to my system. system was still fine.

Google brought me no love on this one, tried searching here with little luck as well. So I'm hoping somebody vastly more experienced than I can shed some light on my plight.
The situation:
I have a CentOS 5.3 x64 server running the latest cPanel which works fantastic. I issued a graceful reboot and the server came back up (according to the DC) just fine to a login prompt. Apparently the system lost all of its IP address configuration. Primary IP, secondary IP's gateway, you name it and it was gone. Now my secondary IP's were showing in cPanel after I had the DC re-enter my main IP address/gateway. But listed as not active due to the fact that they were not anywhere to be attached to the interface. i.e. eth0:1 eth0:2 etc and so on.
I have no idea where to begin looking for this problem and am afraid to reboot it again (at least until I get my lantronix spider up there). I've never experienced this with any of my other CentOS/cPanel servers either. All similar configurations CentOS 5.3 x64, latest cPanel as well. My hardware is all Supermicro gear as well and has been solid in the past.
Maybe I'm just missing something, granted I've only been managing Linux based servers for about two years now. This is actually the first real problem I've ran into on any Linux distro, they are normally pretty solid. So I assume it's a configuration error on my part somewhere.

I've been following grub-common bug #606845 and in coming to a solution for the issue, these guys are using dd as a brute force means of swapping out master boot records or trampling them, if you prefer. (Background: The issue is related to grub and certain xp installations)
An sample snip of code:
dd if=/mbrxp.bin of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
1) Is mbrxp.bin a back-up of the mbr taken before installation of squeeze (or grub in general)?
2) Am I fubar if I didn't make a back-up of the mbr before installing grub?

After running a large update and rebooting a few weeks ago, I found that my internet connection had stopped working. My internal network still worked fine though, so it I know it's not the card itself or its configuration. After a bit of trial and error I discovered that simply running dhclient brings the connection up again, so it appears that something is interfering with the initial dhcp update to my ISP (or something like that; I'm no expert in this area. ) My usual policy in cases like this is to wait through two or three updates in the hopes that it's just a temporary problem, but it's been a while now and subsequent updates haven't fixed it.
I've tried looking around, but I can't come up with search criteria specific enough to narrow it down to my specific situation. I'm not even sure where to begin looking to diagnose the problem, nor do I know which package update(s) could've affected it. I'm not sure what might be useful, but here's the relevant entry in /etc/network/interfaces. I have it configured with a static internal address, with my router as the gateway.
Code:
# The primary network interface
mapping eth0
script grep
map eth0
