Ubuntu :: Set Default Background For All Users?
Jul 8, 2011
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I am trying to figure out how to set a custom default background so that any user that logs onto the machine (via our LDAP server) will see the background that I have set to be default.
I am extremely new to Ubuntu (mainly a Windows person) but am trying to create this environment to give our students an option to boot either into Windows or Ubuntu.

In other Linux distros I've used, new users are assigned to their own group (i.e. user 'joe', group 'joe') by default. To my surprise, when I create new users with my openSUSE 11.4, they are all assigned to the 'users' shared group by default.To test this, I created a new user called 'friends'. From my terminal, I can see how the new user files look like:
joe@linux:~> ls -l /home/friends/
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 2 friends users 4096 Sep 3 11:37 bin
[code]...

How do I stop users from changing their background? I'm installing ubuntu on some (non-networked) computers at my school, and I don't want the students to change the background on the desktop. I don't care if they change it during their session, but it must revert to the default when the session is logged-out or shutdown.

gksudo nautilus sets the background to default (Because nautilus is rendering the desktop) I set the gconf key to stop it rendering the desktop, but this only affects the icons. How can I get it to give me back my background? Edit: Fixed the desktop (--no-desktop option on nautilus command) - need to find how to kill the nautilus process automatically when I close it.

I've just upgraded to Fedora 12 from Fedora 10. When I was using F10, I changed the desktop background (Using Gnome and right clicking on the desktop to see settings)nd then selected the option to make it the default so that the chosen wallpaper appears when I try to log in. However, I can't see this option in Fedora 12.

I'm looking to customize the environment for new users by changing the items in the GNOME menu, change the panel layout, add some shortcuts, and do a few other things. I looked in /etc/skel and there doesn't seem to be anything GNOME related in there; I also tried to put .gconf, .gconfd and .gnome2 from my home directory into /etc/skel and that didn't do what I wanted.

I have about 5 users for our desktop computer, 1 adult, 3 kids and me (I don't count as an adult ).
There are some settings I want to have each of the environments default to, where they can then change them as they wish on their own.
Instead of setting them one-at-a-time, is there a way to modify the settings on the template of what goes into a user's /home directory when they are created?
Examples:
Set it so when I add a person to the system theirdefault browser is set to Firefox starting home page is to our local server Open/Libre Office defaults to MS Office formats And others, less important ones like their pictures are placed in a centralized directory, not their own ~/Pictures.
After this initial setting, they are able to change any and all of these settings on their own, but to have these as default helps me set up their environments to get them started.

I think the following code is trying to change the settings inside the file:
CISum=077
sed -e "s/002/$CISum/" -e "s/022/$CISum/" /etc/bashrc-preCIS > /etc/bashrc
sed -e "s/002/$CISum/" -e "s/022/$CISum/" /etc/csh.cshrc-preCIS > /etc/csh.cshrc
[code].....
But, what if i only want to check what the settings are inside the file, but does not want any changes to the file.

I am building a livecd, the live user created at boot time is a member of the audio group set in /etc/group. This way works for the livecd but when installed a user must manually add himself to the audio group. How can I set new users to automatically become a member of the audio group? In /etc/default/useradd I can set only one group.

I installed F14, then dropped in my passwd, group, and shadow from F9 w/o backing up
what F14 had done. So now I get some messages about missing users like rtkit
and missing groups.
Is there an easy way to find out what default users and groups F14 would have installed?

I've got a small issue that when a Windows user creates a new folder through Windows Explorer (from the menu or by right clicking) the new folder is only accessible to that particular user. Example: user SABKAR (member of the HR group) creates a new folder called MarcTestMenu in a shared Samba directory through Windows Explorer:
[Code]....
At this point user MORAMY cannot copy a file or open the directory MarcTestMenu. MORAMY gets a 'not accessible' error message in Windows. If I su to the Samba box and issue this command:

how I can get the correct default permissions when users create directories through Windows?

I'm comparing a RHEL4 samba server's config to a new RHEL install with a default samba config. On the old one I see that there is a line saying
invalid users = root bin daemon adm sync shutdown halt mail news operator
On the new default install I don't even see where it mentions the invalid users option in the notes. Does it do that by default now or something?

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse
Code:
menuentry "openSUSE 11.2 (i586) (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 9ac05ede-e7c4-47f3-b55b-66d5844$
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop root=/dev/sda2
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
}
which parameters should I add?

We are trying to set up a classroom training environment where our SIG can hold classes for prospective converts from Microsoft/Mac. The ten machines will have /home/student01..10 and /home/linsig01..10 as users. We want /home/student01 to be able to explore and sudo so they can learn to administer their personal machines at home. We don't want them to be able to modify (sudo) /home/linsig01. I've seen the tutorial on Access Control Lists but I'd like other input so we get it right the first time.

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.
