Ubuntu Servers :: Update DDNS For Fixed-address Hosts?

I have DDNS configured and working for dynamic addresses, but it's not quite right for static addresses yet. The DHCP server assigns the static address, but it doesn't update the DNS sever with the associated host name. Which means I have to use the IP address when accessing the host instead of the host name. How can I get the DHCP server to update the DNS with the host name associated with the fixed-address?Here is my current dhcpd.conf.

Ubuntu LTS 8.04 + DHCP. Works fine except for fixed addresses. I mean all devices which need to get fixed IP according to their MACs don't get them and keep to receive random IPs from the range (almost everytime all machines receive the same IP they got from DHCP for the first time).

I have two virtual hosts that I want to be able to send through one router. I have two seperate dynamic hostnames on dyndns.
Apparently my router allows me to enter two seperate hostnames locally as well: DynDNS Host and Domain Name

How do I tell the router which is which? Currently I see the same site with both URLs
Do I have to set one vhost to do some 'funky' stuff (black hole in my head when it comes to static routes or BIND? ). And then set the other vhost to host both sites?
I'm running CentOS and an apache webserver. I want to demo a web site 'externally' from two different sub-domains.
I've looked high and low but most examples don't seem to be simply trying to put two different web-sites up to two Dynamic DNS Hosts.
It must be possible, all the pieces are there. I'm just missing the link!

I am running my own Postfix mail server. Some time ago I noticed that most email was rejected because of the server's dynamic IP address. So I got a fixed IP address. However then I noticed that some mails got rejected due to failing the reverse DNS check. So my ISP told me to get a range of IP addresses and they could then create a PTR record for one of those addresses. That is now running but it turns out that the IP address used for the PTR record is a ... dynamic IP address. So Spamhaus PBL rejects my emails again.

Do you have any idea on how to achieve my goal? Here is the scenario. As a requirement on our development process for every ticket we have we need to create a branch(svn) so that we can develop without disturbing other developer. Now for every checkout I made I need to create a vhost so that I can develop first in my local before deploying to the branch.The site I'm working on is based in Drupal. The files I checked out is just the all folder of Drupal. The core files are already in my local. So the script would grab the core files and copy the all folder in my checkout branch then put them in the vhost.So basically I need a script that will do these automatically for me:1. Setup a vhost Ex: My branch name is 1205googleplusone. Inside that branch has two folders, all and default. What I need only is the DocumentRoot should only point to all folder.2. Update the /etc/hosts Ex: The URL should be 1205googleplusone.domain.com. 3. Create a new database for the new site The script should create a new database and update the configuration.php

i've installed bind and dhcp. I'd like to update dns automatically by dhcp. For the reverse-lookup-zone everything works fine. But for the forward-lookup-zone there is still the message denied. But i cannot see a mistake.

I have a slackware server running ISC dhcpd and bind, and I want to give a dual boot XP / Ubuntu client a fixed address based on its MAC.
I added a host stanza to my server's dhcpd.conf:

I restarted bind and dhcpd, restarted the client's networking, and it still requests (and receives) its previously leased address, which is not the fixed address I want it to get. I tried dhclient -r to make the client release the old address, didn't help. On networking restart it still gets offered the old (wrong) address. Could it be that dhcpd somehow hangs on to the old lease even after the client sent a DHCPRELEASE?
How do I tell dhcpd to forget about an old lease, and how do I make dhcpd hand out the fixed address (and only that address) I specified for a given MAC, regardless of what the client requests?

I am new to Linux so thought it would be a good learning exercise to try and setup an FTP server using linux.I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10 server edition and installed vsftpd, following instructions found on here I have configured the software and I can connect from an FTP client on my windows PC across the internal LAN.I have a couple of questions if I may:
1) a post on this forum suggests that local users can access the FTP server if the correct line is enabled in vsftpd.conf - I have done this and the fact that I can access it shows this is working I would think, however users added subsequently with the useradd command cannot access the server. Filezilla shows a could not connect to server error.
2) how do I give the server a fixed IPv4 address? It is currently using DHCP
3) I need to be able to put files into users folders for them to access offsite, but I don't want them to see each others filesfolders, can I do this?

When I install Fedora 10 on a new system, I let it default to DHCP. Later, I change the system to a fixed IP address by running system-config-network, selecting eth0, clicking on "Edit", clicking on "Statically set IP addresses:" and filling in the blanks. I have trouble getting a gateway to the internet when setting eth0 with a fixed IP address. The gateway address (192.168.2.1 my modem/router) resets to 0.0.0.0 whenever I apply the changes. DHCP works fine but I need a fixed address for my server.

I just changed my CentOS server from DHCP to static IP address. After the change, I cannot ping other hosts on the same subnet. (I can ping the CentOS itself).The IP address of CentOS is 192.168.0.202.After pinging 192.168.0.106 (106 is on and other host can ping it), arp -a shows? (192.168.0.106) at <incomplete> on eth0 It looks ARP cannot resolve MAC address of hosts 192.168.0.106.

What is the (officially) proper way to configure Apache so that a given IP address can have two or more virtual host names, each going to different distinct configurations (e.g. with different DocumentRoot, Alias, etc), and also do this for the IP address so that it goes to a designated configuration rather than defaulting to the first or a random host name?
Apache documentation does not appear to address this. If so, it has it hidden in a non-obvious place.

1) I'm not sure which IP address to use when I list my machine name in /etc/hosts, particularly after reading:

I have setup Denyhosts to run on my server, and have been using it succesfully for the last few weeks, to allow me to ssh into my server from my home dev machine.
This morning, I accidentally typed my password incorrectly three times - and ended up being locked out of the system (tghat was ok, because that was what was supposed to happen). I logged into the server via another way and took the following actions (in the order given)
/etc/init.d/ssh stop
/etc/init.d/denyhosts stop
removed my IP address from /etc/hosts.deny
/etc/init.d/ssh start

The facts are as follows:
1. I have at work a regular LAN with many PCs, each with a DNS-registered public IP. Therefore I am able to address each of these PCs by their fully-qualified names and, for instance, initiate ssh sessions to any of these computers just by typing "ssh <name_of_machine>" from a terminal.
2. Within the aforementioned LAN I have just created a private network with some clients, which access the LAN through a router (a D-link DIR-825). We have created this private network for many reasons, but most importantly because we need to guarantee that the hosts in this network will remain networked among them even if the LAN goes down for any reason (which unfortunately happens often). But we still need to have access to the hosts in the private network from the LAN.
3. I am able to define port forwarding rules in the router in order to access certain services on the private network's clients. For example. I am able to access (by ssh) hosts "H1" and "H2" on the private network from a client on the LAN by defining rules for forwarding ports "P1" and "P2" on the router's public IP to TCP port 22 on the private IPs of "H1" and "H2", respectively. Then I would access each of these hosts from the LAN by using:
>ssh -p P1 [ip.address.of.router] (for accessing H1) and >ssh -p P2 [ip.address.of.router] (for accessing H2)
4. The problem with the port forwarding approach is that it is not easily scalable. For instance, If I wanted to enable ssh access to each host in the private network, I would have to define a port forwarding rule for each machine, and then REMEMBER all these port rules when initiating a ssh session from the LAN in order to point to the right host. And the problem gets worse when considering more services in addition to ssh.
5. The ideal solution would be to be have a means for addressing each host in the private network individually, in much the same way in which I address the hosts in the LAN (which have DNS-registered names). For instance, in order to access hosts H1 and H2 as in the previous example, i would like to be able to just type
>ssh [name_of_host_H1] (for accessing H1) and >ssh [name_of_host_H2] (for accessing H2)
The bottom line:
I guess I can say that what I need is some kind of combined DNS-ing and routing that allows me to communicate with the hosts in the private network from outside of it in a transparent way.
The question is: what are any possible solutions for accomplishing this? I have searched the web and found stuff about things like VPNs, reverse-proxies and NAT servers, but I really can't understand if any of these could serve to solve my problem (BTW, isn't my router doing some sort of NAT-ing already? could I just add some DNS-ing in some way?)

I am trying to run two web servers (Virtual Hosts) on a single Linux Centos 5.5 box with a single IP address 192.168.0.182. I did all the pre-installation requirements such yum install mysql, yum install mysqladmin, service httpd start, service mysqld start etc etc.In /var/www/html directory, I have two folder called server1 and server2. These two folders have the necessary web server php script files and folders. I opened the browser and managed to install the script on one web server successfully. When I put the IP address 192.168.0.182 on the browser address bar, the page loads without any problem. Now I would like to be able to install the other web server script and I don't know how to?Here is my httpd configuration;

I can reach other hosts by means of their global addresses by either the IP address or hostname (that has the global address). What I want to (also) do is have a hostname that references the IPv6 link local IP address (an AAAA record in DNS, or just the fe80::<whatever> address in /etc/hosts) and use that host name in commands to access that host. The problem is, an interface ID is needed when making such a reference.
It sure looks like the programs just pass the host name string on to the resolver library, which does not understand the significance of the '%' even though it could find and see that the name preceding the '%' is consistent with that being an IPv6 link local address (e.g. the logic could have been "split at first % and see if preceeding name is found as a link local address and accept that if so, or ignore the split otherwise" ... but it isn't). Is there a different syntax for this ... or was it overlooked in the design of programming around IPv6?I want to be able to address a host by its link local address, while still using a mnemonic instead of having to type the IPv6 address.

I'm getting millions of log entries in my nscd.log like the ones below. There's no connection to (or from) this IP address so I'm totally at a loss for what would cause this.

I don't know if I'm posting in the right box - I'm new to both Ubuntu and this forum so please bear with me. Thing is, I spent almost 2 days trying to find a web server that meets my likes. I tried like almost every well known web server, be it Apache, Lighttpd, Nginx, and Cherokee, one by one. For each I was successfully in getting PHP up and running, but was never able to configure the virtual hosts.
I'm 99.99% sure that I - for multiple times - followed correctly the online how-to's. Especially Cherokee, I did exactly the screencast (which is just 2 steps, as Cherokee has a GUI for virtual server setups). Strange enough, with each web server the virtual hosts thing never worked for me. I always received "Server not found" error. I tried with Firefox and Google Chrome. Currently I'm on an Ubuntu 9.10 (32bit) box - I reinstalled this one over the 64bit, to vain.
Don't know if it's a problem with my DNS, but I have another machine running Windows 7 with the same DHCP settings (means same DNS and IP range). Virtual hosts work fine there on an XAMPP installation.

I'm wondering if this is even possible before I start the learning curve with Ubuntu and apache virtual hosts.
I have a static external IP address that resolves to the various domain names I will be using. I have a web server inside my network with a private IP address and any http request to the firewall is forwarded to the webserver on the appropriate port. This setup works well when using the same web page/configuration for all of the domains.
Will it be possible to use named virtual hosts in this configuration, or will the NAT'ing interfere?

I have just downloaded and installed the 32 bit server version on a couple of machines.These machines are remote displays, no keyboards or mice, requiring a kick of from ssh to start the app. Its just bare sever install with TWM, X, and XDM.Problem is they don't seem to read my /etc/X0.hosts file until theres been a keyboard login. After that locally xhost returns the names from the file.I removed the exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@" linefrom /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc but this also isIn the user .profile I have these 2 lines, DISPLAY='0.0'xhost +This is a real chicken and egg thing, no auto login, no keyboard for login and no ssh X access before a local login. And no easy way to make it auto login with out installing GWM.
