Ubuntu Servers :: Sftp Or Ftps - Configure Another User To Go Over The Web With Limited Folder Access?

I want to share files over the web with only a few people and limiting them to certain folders. I have been doing a remote access (ssh) to my server to access it from a pc on the local network. I later found out the same program doing ssh (open_ssh) was also doing sftp, great I could do both with one system account. Problem I couldn't find away to configure another user to go over the web with limited folder access without messing up my user to access the pc. I tried ftps by using vsftpd, I couldn't get chroot set up correctly or even log in. So my question is what program and/or protocol should I use to do secure ftp over the web?
I am using Mandriva 8 as my local server, i want to configure sftp sever by which particular user can access particular directory of our local server by using ftp client, can anyone tell me how can i do it?
i want to allow some friends to ssh/sftp/scp into my system but i only want them to have access to my external hard drive (/media/externalHD/), and i dont want them to be able to delete or add anything, only download.i have found instructions on how to limit a user to his/her home directory and thought about just creating a user with the home directory /media/externalHD but idk if this will work and im afraid i might make a mistake and delete 800gb of 'files'
I want to create a limited user, such that the user should only have the access to usb drives, cd drives and internet. And also I want to restrict the user from deleting the files from the system. How to do it..?
I have a project stored on a university server which I'd like to be able to work on from home.
I already have an SFTP folder set up, which I can access easily in Nautilus, and I can freely copy files back and forth, or open them in e.g. gedit.
However, the project is in Matlab, and I cannot see the mounted SFTP folder from within Matlab. This means that I can't work on the project in Matlab without copying the whole lot across to my local machine when I want to work on it.
Is there some way I can get Matlab to "see" the connection so that I can use the mounted SFTP folder like any other in my filesystem? It appears on my desktop when connected - does it have some other mount location?
I want to allow users to user sftp to upload and download files frome one folder, as you know this uses ssh, my question is if i create user to access linux serverthrough ftpd they will be able to browse the root directry, can I create users and ristrict them to only specific directory?
it is possible if i can have sub-users in my server and can i allocate a limited amount of space only. For example i am the root of server and now i can add another user with name john and he should be able to use only of 2GB out of my total hard-disk.
I'd like to setup an Ubuntu LAMP server, and provide limited access to it for our in-house web developers/designers. I'm not quite sure how to go about the permissions side of things. Which user/group should "own" the /var/www directory? Is it www-data?
How do I create user accounts (for our developers) that have access to the /var/www directory - do I create accounts then add them to the www-data group? Or should I make a special 'webdev' group and give it access somehow?
I have SSH running on a computer I use as a server at home and login to it for my own purposes but am needing to share access to this server with someone else, and I'd like to do it in a way so that when they sign in all they see is the contents of one folder and nothing outside of it. So I'd like them to have full access to this folder and do anything they want with it, but not be able to browse outside of it at all via something like WinSCP (they're using Windows). I'm thinking I need to create a new account for them to sign in with but beyond that I'm not sure what I need to do. The only other special thing is that the folder I'd like them to be presented with is actually on an external hard drive. We're going to be doing a lot of online music collaboration and I need to give him lots of free space to drop files and the internal hard drive doesn't have a lot to spare right now.
I am currently running Ubuntu Server 9.10 as an FTP server. It has become a necessity to allow users access via SSH terminal or sftp via WinSCP. I need to be able to monitor what users are doing at any given time and be able to pull up each users activity history. Essentially I need to be able to pinpoint who modified a file at what time. Also what is the best method to monitor things like nmap probes?

How can I make it such that he cannot run "ls" command when he FTPs into the server using the username/passwd I setup.I would not mind disabling "ls" for SSh or FTP as long as user is unable to list all files in the home directory and is only able to use FTP commands like GET, PUT, RENAME etc... Dont want them to have DELETE permission also...in this folder. This user will only be used for FTP...how can I enforce the above controls.
I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

the user www-data should have read access to my folder but i am still getting a 403 forbidden error i have done this before without issue anyone see what is wrong? i have a folder i use for file transfers over IM it is more reliable than the messengers file transfer abilities
I Have Configure Samba server in Centos, I need give permission like for some user(5User) can able to read and write the particular folder, and again i need give some another user(6user) can only read permission for same folder.
I configured FTP server on Fedora 7.0 . I create different users with different password. I also create seprate directory for each FTP user. All are working . When I use filezilla for connecting that FTP site I can access all the directory on that server.
Now I want to configure that no any FTP user can access other FTP users directory or any other directory in server machine . What I do for this .
I have a php app set up in the default virtualhost, and want to add a Grails app. The grails app runs on [URL] and I want to configure apache2 to proxy that folder to Jetty using mod_proxy.

I have created vsftp server with grop of users and they can access only to /home/ftp-folder file which i made for them..nw if i apply read rite privilages to this folder then these previlages get by users in the group obvious...bt wot i want z if i creat a folder in /home directory i.e /home/test and i want the particular user in the group can have 777 access and other users in the grop coud nt access that folder..

how to give full set of permisions to an user in linux to access a folder?
I've been searched for the related topic, but i couldn't found any of them. Basically, i want to set up a server to restrict internet access for other computer (windows box), but allow internet connection for kaspersky to download its database. Here are some questions:
1. Do i need two network card at the server box? 2. There are 8 computers but only 2 are allowed all internet connection, 6 of the rest are not allowed, all windows box can accept connection to download database from kaspersky. 3. Is it Iptables the best, easiest way to configure?

Can we create a limited user account in ubuntu like XP where user can not be able to change its networking settings (like changing IPs / enable & disable netwrok interface).
