View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.

I don't want to install the gui on it and waste resources as the pc is not all that new. But I don't know how to download things into the pc and store them in folders through the CLI. I just want to know an easy way to at least download webmin into it and I think I can figure out the rest. I know how to install webmin from CLI.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt can be summed up by saying the internet works fine some moments then becomes so laggy a few minutes later it is completely unusable. This is what has happened so far. First I went to scottrade trading platform, it takes real-time quotes of stocks and graphs them, allows you to see account information. It was working amazing for about 20 seconds, then out of nowhere the internet just stops working on it completely and wont come back. Then I tried WCIII. The patch would not download at all. I couldn't even manually get it. Then 3 minutes later I try it again and it starts making progress.
Ubuntu update files are downloading the slowest I have ever seen before. I went to ....., the videos download really fast for a few seconds then they just stop. No progress at all for at least a minute or so and then they crawl back to making progress. Web pages I visit work fine one moment, I go back to the exact same page a minute later and it doesnt work at all, takes a few minutes just to load.

Since the download starts at 2 AM i used to leave my system ON. When I try to do the configuration in Yast, in network devices -> network settings and I save I get a message that I must install the "iw" package. Because the computer is quite far from wired networks I can't get it on Internet to download the package automatically. So, I want to ask if it's possible to install this package off-line because I can't find it by searching on OpenSUSE website.
On this computer I use OpenSUSE 11.2 32-bit with KDE. I put some commands if someone wants to know how I manage to get this USB WiFi adaptor to work (with the Windows XP driver sis163u verison 5.1.1039.1050):

When I upgraded from debian lenny to squeeze, my iceweasel browser was upgraded at the same time (3.5.15), and I'm having difficulty getting it to function as it used to.When I visit sites that link to PDF files, they download automatically, when what I want is for the PDF to be displayed by the browser. I have Applications for PDF set to Always Ask.I have PDF Download as an extension, and under its Preferences I have Open PDF as default action, using the xpdf utility on the host, opened in same tab, caught by name. I do not have a PDF plugin. Is the PDF Download extension forcing a download rather than display of the PDF in the browser?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu (at least on server distributions). I used debian versions for a long time and thought, to try ubuntu LTS 10.0.4, because of the long time support cycle. I had problems, to install this distribution on a x86 platform (used with ASUS P4B533-v), because of kernel panic after installation. So I used a trick to get it running. I installed Ubuntu LTS 8.04 and compiled a kernel 2.6.34 and made a distupgrade. All went o.k. and is now running as a productive system.
My question now belongs to the used pid folder /var/run. I'm using some self compiled programs and had to create a separatly folder (e.g. /var/run/stunnel). My problem is, after rebooting the system, the folder is deleted automatically! Never saw this issue on other distributions. Is there any reason why? Of course, I can write a section in my init script, searching for existing folder and if not, creating it ...

The server is used by two different organisations that are not supposed to have access to the data of the other one(at least not as normal users).he script I need should run in the background of the server and when a drive is plugged in, it should check, which organization the drive belongs to, and depending on who the drive belongs to, backup the respective share.When the drive belong to neither, it should just do nothing.Unfortunately, I have no clue about scripting and so this makes writing a script like that, at least for me, impossible.So I wanted to know if somebody could name some good websites for learning to write such a script or give tips.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to configure a cron script to update the packages in /var/cache/apt-cacher/packages? When a client machine updates a package, apt-cacher checks that it's cached package is up-to-date, and downloads a new version if it is not.
I'd like apt-cacher to check it's cached packages every night and download any updated ones, on the premise that since it exists in the apt-cacher cache, someone has that package installed and is going to want to update it. Is this possible? Does apt-cacher do this anyway, and I haven't noticed?
Anyone know how to stop the pureftpd starting up automatically? I've tried the usual in /etc/init.d/pureftpd but it still starts and I need to log in and close it in the admin UI or in terminal.
