Jul 1, 2010So basically I have 6x 1TB drives in a Linux raid 5, and I have 2x 1.5TB drives running standalone and 1x 2TB drive.I want to backup weekly, data from the Raid 5 array to these independent disks. I configured 3 directories, one for each disk.
data1 => 2TB drive with 1.1TB of valuable data
data2 => First 1.5TB drive 430GB of tech tools and Linux ISO
data3 => Second 1.5TB 46GB of Misc items.

CentOS 5 :: Scheduled Unattended Backups With Alerts If The Backups Fail
Feb 3, 2011I've been a DOS/Windows guy for 20 years, and recently became a SW test lab helper. My company uses CentOS for a lot, so I've become familiar with it, but obviously not as comfortable as I am with Windows.
Here's what I have planned:
machine: Core 2 Duo E8400, 8GB DDR2, 60GB SSD OS drive, ATI 4650 video card, other storage is flexible (I have 3 1TB drives and 4 750GB drives around that can be used in this machine.)
uses: HTPC, Network Storage, VMWare server host: SMTP, FTP server, and Web server virtual machines
I've figured out how to do much of this, but I haven't figured out how to do backups in Linux. I've been spoiled with Windows, with the built in backup system so simple to use. I find myself overwhelmed with the array of backup software, and unable to determine which to use. none of them seem to do everything I need them to do, but some come close, I think. I'm hoping someone here can help me out in figuring out which program to use and how to use it.
Here is what I need the backup software to do:
1. scheduled unattended backups, with alerts if the backups fail
2. a weekly full backup with incremental every 12 hours
3. removing the old backups when the new full backup runs, I would prefer to keep 2 weeks of backups, but that's not necessary
4. a GUI would be preferable, since my arthritic fingers don't always do as I want them to do. I typo things a lot, and the label worn off my backspace can attest to that.

Feb 22, 2011I decided to create a file server for my family. I have set up a RAID 6 (4 disk) array. My thoughts were to back up the array to a hard drive monthly. Store the drive in a WiebeTech Drivebox, off site, in a "fire proof" box. (The kind for papers sold at Staples or Office Depot. After a year, I would have 12 back-ups. I would then overwrite the previous hard drive. (i.e. HDD from March 2011 would be overwritten on March 2012.)
Additionally, I was wondering if there was recommended maintenance to verify the array is working properly. Right now, I am moving data to the array so quickly that I am backing up every few days between three hard drives. (Back-up #4 was written to Drive #1 after Drive #1 was reformatted.) I am aware that I could use rsync. (Which I currently use for backing up my portable USB HDD to the RAID array.)
General :: Rsync Incremental Backups Rather Than Full Backups?
Nov 12, 2009How do you get Rsync to do incremental backups rather than full backups? At the moment I have a script that will create a backup folder (if it doesnt already exist) then copy the source files into the backup directory with the command
rsync $VERBOSE --exclude=$TARGET/ $EXCLUDE --exclude '/Ls-wtgl1c8/**' -rt --delete $source/ $TARGET/$source/ >> $LOG_FILE
Target is where the files will be backed up to Sources is the dir(s) to be backed up Exclude files is the list of files not to backup
log file is where the output will be saved to. At the moment it only does full backups, but I would only like to do incremental, how would this be achieved? Am I missing out an option in the Rsync that is required.

May 1, 2011I'm trying to follow various ways to setup a Time Machine drive on my Ubuntu 'natty' server. I am at the stage now though where I can't seem to find the external USB HDD anywhere. I have it partitioned into two and cannot find anything to do with it. When I check ot doesn't show up in the memory either. Is there a way to mount it or find it?

I moved the home directories, along with passwd, group, shadow, and gshadow. The users can login fine, and their home directories are fine. The problem is when they try to logout, they get

Apr 1, 2011I had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on server#1 and moved it to server#2. Everything works fine, including the changing of eth2/3 back to eth0/1. I was wondering if it's possible to use the nvidia onboard raid and make a raid 1 with this OS not getting wiped out. It's a bios level cheesy raid and it warns that it's erasing the data (which is didn't erase), but wont boot anyway. I'm assuming it's probably best to just create a software raid in the working OS with a fresh 2nd drive.

And the numbers or alphabet in between user name and the domain will be vary , I can't just do a normal alias.
I been try to play around with main.cf and the virtual alias table but still not able to get work. So I am not sure is the main.cf didnt configure correctly or the regular expression is not working.

The mysqld scripts works fine when run from the command line, but it does not work when i use the links created by chkconfig. I checked the boot.log and found that mysql starts but then it stops or gets shutdown. This is the log message:

Ubuntu Servers :: IMAP And Method To Sync Calendars On IMAP With Both Thunderbird / Lightning Blackberry
Mar 1, 2010I'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.

Jun 7, 2011I think this goes here, but I'm not sure. I decided that XAMPP had been troublesome enough. MySQL never worked. So I decided to instal the LAMP stack offered by YaST. I went about installing it thinking that it would all work. But it seems that I was wrong. So I try to start mysql, and here's what I get:

Aug 20, 2010I have probably found a bug in the Ubuntu php5 package. At first I thought it's a problem with Zend Framework, which I use, then I thought it's a php issue, but now it seems to be a problem with Ubuntu's php packages. My problem is that under certain conditions, php is going to read records from the mysql database table infinite times. For a much more detailed description of the bug,[URL]..
I've tried on an x86 Ubuntu Desktop edition, and an x64 Ubuntu Server edition, both 10.04, and both had this bug. I have set up a test system (x86 Ubuntu Server edition 10.04), and compiled apache2 and php5 from source, but used the mysql-server package from the repository. And I couldn't reproduce the bug. However, after copying the self-compiled libphp5.so file from the test system to the desktop that produces the error, I could still reproduce the error on the desktop. This suggests me that the problem is either not in php, or - more probably - there are multiple php binaries used in the repository version, and therefore it doesn't matter that I've copied my libphp5.so because mysql functions are somewhere else. I've found a mysql.so file in /usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs coming from the php5-mysql package. Does that have anything to do with this issue?

Feb 5, 2010I set up mod_proxy in order to get rid of :8080 now I cant access phpmyadmin through the browser. what is the quickest way to turn off mod_proxy and access phpmyadmin? I would like to optimize the tables and back up the sql file. I just need to turn it on for a bit, and then enable mod_proxy again.Right now, if I got to localhost/phpmyadmin, it redirects to the main application.

Feb 8, 2010I'm using ubuntu 9.10 64bit and I'want to configure php mysql and lampp. Also the package mysql-ser is already installed, so if I install MYSQL GUI tools(Administrator, query browser..) from my synaptic package manager will it detect the mysql already installed ? Also tried configuring lampp by extracting it in my /opt directory and i started the server, which MySQL ll it detect the one which was previously installed otr the oin that in gui tools ?
Also think the current ubuntu repository does't have latest build of mysql GUI tools, so how the above mentioned things ll change if I try to download the individual package.
Oveall what I want is to configure Mysql GUI tools, Mysql workbench, xampp and php(For this I'm using Bluefish and Komposer). Please help me out so that I can leave windows for my Web-projects.

I'm running Ubuntu as a Virtual machine with VMWare on top of a Windows 2008 Server. It has been working perfectly for nearly 9 months. I have one processor and 2GB of Ram assigned to the Virtual machine. Memory usage seldom ever reaches more than 50%, swapfile is hardly used either. I noticed recently that sites were loading very slow from time to time. Webmin showed me that USER / KERNEL were together using 100% cpu. I then started searching for answers to what was causing this and then read about using HTOP. I then installed HTOP and found that the following processes were the culprits
/usr/sbin/mysqld
/usr/sbin/apache2 -k start
There are multiple instances of mysqld and apache2 listed in HTOP, I assume this is because I run multiple sites on the box. It does however seem limited to only one or two PID's that are repeatedly maxing out the CPU at 100% (every 30 seconds to a minute) sometimes the CPU will stay maxed at 100% for nearly a minute and then free itself again but it is doing this continually. At the point when the CPU maxes out at 100% there will be one instance of mySQLD and one instance of Apache2 right at the top of HTOP and between the two they will be hogging 100% cpu. All the sites are either Wordpress or Joomla sites and I am quite confident it's one of these sites causing a problem.
My issue is that I cannot pin down which PID belongs to which site. Then, once I know which site it is how do I then trace what process / file inside that site is casuing the problem? I figured one of my busiest sites (wordpress) might be the culprit and I installed the W3 Total Cache plugin today but that has not helped this 100% cpu problem, so for all I know it might be another WP site on the box or even one of the Joomla sites. I've noticed that the TIME column on the one MYSQLD instance that maxes out is very long so it seems like Mysql is keeping some connection open or something?
