Ubuntu :: SU Authentication Failure / Default Root Password To Enter?

Feb 19, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 inside windows and every time I go to the terminal and type "su" it asks me for a password. Well the password I set before the install doesn't work, it gives me an authentication failure. I thought that since it was inside windows it didn't set me as a root user. I go to user groups and I see my name there and then "root" above it, but its grayed out. Is there a default root password I can enter?

OpenSUSE Install :: Start A Browser It Asks To Enter Root Password?

Sep 7, 2011

Whenever I start a browser, it asks me to enter my root password because of some pgp keyring issue. I set my password as standard in seahorse, but no change.

The Gnome3 interface sometimes lags very noticeably.

Packagekit constantly blocks my zypper use, and it won't shut down. Not even after I log out and log in again. I tried just removing everything related to packagekit, but that just breaks everything.

Searching for repositories is a pain and there are too many different ones and I never know which one is the latest and how these will be upgraded in the future. Zypper itself is awesome, everything else about package and repo management is not.

I can't uninstall applications properly. I remove them via zypper, and when I do a distro update they get added back in. (gnome games for example)

Whenever I install or search for anything in zypper, I get hundreds of these errors: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: The connection is closed)..but it still finds something.

General :: No Prompt For Root Password After Attempting To Enter Single User Mode?

Jul 13, 2011

I followed instructions to enter single user mode by adding single at the end of kernel line but after that it doesn't ask for root password but brings up the sh# prompt. Isn't that supposed to be insecure? I understand for this the grub password can be applied but even after adding "single" it should ask for root password..or it should not..??

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Boot System - "enter Password For Root"

Feb 10, 2011

I've created LVMs, and use this after I have added new disks to the system. df -h give me some lines, and one of them looks like this:(this is the system which holds backup files - and I want to disconnect it from time to time to create a duplicate backup)

/dev/mapper/backup-backup 147G 123G 17G 89% /media/backup

Problem: When I disconnect this drive, the system will not boot. Gives me the "enter password for root" or click control+D to continue. How can I get around this check - if the disk fails to load, or have been taken out.

I don't know if I installed it like a noob a while ago but I would like to secure it now especially since I just figured out how setup virtual hosts and I may want to eventually let people host sites on my server and I obviously don't want to have to give them root access. How can I confirm that apache2 is running as root and how do I take it away from the root user?

Ubuntu Servers :: Only Root Can Write To /tmp

Mar 2, 2010

8.04 64bit LTS no gui loaded Only the root user can write to /tmp. I tried to create a cron job for a user and received an error

Code:

crontab -e
no crontab file for ed - using an empty one
/tmp/crontab.SCQ30O: Permission denied
Creation of temporary crontab file failed - aborting

Then I tried a simple touch /tmp/test1 and it failed with a 'touch: cannot touch `/tmp/test1': Permission denied I tried the Windows fix and rebooted, no change. Only root can write to tmp. This may sound lame but... using ls /tmp show reversed video (highlighted blue on green) on the servers the the users have access to, just plain blue on the 'broke' one. I did a sudo chmod a+w /tmp but do not know if that was a smart thing to do or not...

I think the tutorial is really great for a newbie, but it consistently uses su instead of sudo.I'm aware of the fact that setting a root-password isn't recommended in the documentation, but don't you need a root-account to be able to run tools such as webmin?
