I have a small webserver running ubuntu server 10.4. It runs fine except after every reboot, I get DNS errors. I have to manually edit /etc/resolv.conf to add:

The address of my internet gateway on my LAN. Obviously I am ignoring the warning in resolv.conf that this will be overwritten.

I'm trying to set the resolution to 1680x1020. I edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and try to manually enter the resolution but after a reboot it goes back to the default.

I have recently converted my old desktop computer into a server (using the ubuntu server 10.10 install disk), installed xubuntu, and have installed the driver for my WPN111 usb antenna using ndiswrapper. I then installed wicd to connect to my home network (with a WPA2 passkey). Anyways, it works great... with one major annoyance � whenever I reboot (with "sudo reboot") the computer, the wireless configuration isn't detected at all.

The only time it works is when I turn my computer off and manually turn back it on... and then "iwconfig" gives me a third entry: wlan0. The wireless then (and only then) works like a charm. The problem is, I want to be able to access this server away from home, and of course in that situation I cannot manually reboot it.
does anyone know of a good site/book/guide to learn about linux web server administration?
and also how do you find the your own nameserver numbers? would that just be the IP of my web server?networking isn't my forte, but i do intend to learn with this project.
Like many others I'm running into some reverse lookup issues with SSH. Setup is as follows:
localnet setup
myserver - 192.168.0.x
myworkstation - 192.168.0.y

nslookup tests show that my reverse lookup is functioning correctly. However, if I use "myworkstation" to connect to myserver.mydomain.com using an external nameserver SSH says: "Address 84.162.xx.yy maps to myserver.mydomain.com, but this does not map back to the address - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT!"
On myserver the /etc/hosts has the internal address for the server which seems the normal way to go to me. Changing this to the servers external address solves the issue.
Apparently a connection originating from myworkstation arrives from/with my external address, and when its reverse is checked by the server it apparently finds its own internal address for that name in /etc/hosts before doing a nameserver query and thus concludes that internaladdress <> externaladdress which gives the error.
Is there any way to have the server check external DNS before /etc/hosts? Another solution would probably be running an internal DNS, so myworkstation doesn't connect through the 'outside'.
How can I have /etc/resolv.conf point to my router address as the nameserver nameserver 192.168.1.1
instead of picking up the ISP's DNS servers and using that as the nameserver entries? Reason being I have more than one ISP account, and when I change I do not want to have to remember to restart the networking service. because i often forget.
Two or three times on a daily basis it just freezes and I do not know why. For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

So I would like to backup everything essential that is not in my home folder. I would like to have it compressed into a archive and automatically backed up to a external drive that I have connected. If god forbid my system ever crashed I would like to pull this archive up and have everything back up an running quickly.

How do I decide what IP address to enter in my config file when assigning a static IP. All of the instructions I can find say something like "of course you should modify the file according to your own settings." Should I just use the gateway and IP that returns from "iwconfig" and "route -nee"?

The keyboard seems to be dead, no keys work, not allowing me to enter the password.
Succeeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

I have 1 Ubuntu server acting as a gateway / proxy and a bunch of iptables rules to log packets from each of these systems. This is done to monitor internet acces. The resulting log file grows to about 80 - 100Mb on a daily basis. I tried setting up log logrotate ( through webmin as well as manually ) to rotate this log file every night at 11:00 pm. However, the file does not get rotated. when i run logrotate -d /etc/logrotate.conf everything goes through fine. i get a message saying that the file qualifies for rotation and no errors.
If i manually force the rotation ( through webmin ) it happens. However, on its own, the log file does not get rotated. I am completely stumped. I tried replicating the exact same settings that are set for syslog rotation, and still no luck. All the other log files do get rotated at the appropriate time ( i have checked in the /var/log/ directory ), but this one does not. I thought it might have been because i had some prerotate and postrotate scripts. Manually forcing rotation did not generate any errors and the scripts ran without any problems. But even then, i removed those scripts, and still no luck. this is the config file for logrotate ( in /etc/logrotate.d/bcrl )

But at the next and each subsequent cold boot the BIOS reports "Your system last boot fail or post interrupted Please enter setup to load default and reboot". The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.

Therefore I have to enable it manually upon boot so that it works.I'm using Fedora 10, fresh installed and updated. I've noticed through search that others have had this issue as well throughout other versions of Fedora, yet I have not found a conclusive solution to this.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have set up a new IP specifically for SSH and configured SSHD_Config accordingly to listen on this new interface and a specific port. However when I reboot SSH is not starting. Looking in the syslog it shows that it is unable to start. It looks like its trying to listen on the interface before it is set up.

I am able to start SSH manually once the server is booted. Do I need to set up my interfaces differently to ensure they are available prior to SSH starting somehow? I don't want to change my ssh config to listen on all addresses.
I have an iSCSI target on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server that is giving me access to 3 x 2TB volumes. I am using LVM to create 1 big volume and using it as a place for my backup software to write to. Upon initial setup I tested to see if the connection would still be there after a reboot, and it was. After going through the trouble of configuring my backup software (ZManda) and doing a few very large backups I had to reboot my SAN (OpenFiler) for hardware reasons. I took my server down while performing the maintenance and brought it back up only after the SAN work was done. Now, the LVM volume is listed as "not found" when booting.
Using iscsiadm I can see the target but LVM doesn't know of any volumes that exist using those targets. I need to get it back up and running and then troubleshoot the reboot issue.
When I edit /etc/resolv.conf, it is overwritten right away with the old configuration. How do I really change the nameserver on Ubuntu Server 9.10?
