Ubuntu Servers :: Convince Synaptic To Abort The Upgrade?

Apr 7, 2010

Is there any way to back out of and upgrade that is not going well, The original OS is still operable but of course synaptic wants the upgrade to continue. The upgrade stalled after packages were downloaded and about 45 to 90 seconds into the install/upgrade. Is there a way to convince synaptic to abort the upgrade?

Ubuntu Servers :: Error: Software Caused Connection Abort

May 1, 2010

I'm at the end of my rope here, and am extremely frustrated. I have a web server running on Ubuntu Server and am using OpenSSH for all my SSH and sftp needs. However, I have the strangest of all situations that I cannot for the life of me figure out.

I have a user chrooted to /var/www/username in /etc/ssh/sshd_config and in /etc/passwd. When the user is chrooted to that folder, whenever I try to log in through SFTP using any client, I get an error saying "Network error: Software caused connection abort." The kicker is, when I chroot the user to /var/www that user can log in just fine. I've tried changing every chmod and chown setting I can think of, and I have NO idea why it matters by one folder.

I had the jail working perfectly for about 2 hours, when it seemingly just decided to stop. What's really getting to me is why the two folders, which have the exact same settings, are not operating the same way.

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Package Upgrade ?

Feb 23, 2010

I am trying to get Ubuntu up and running on my Dell XPS 400 desktop. I verified the checksum of the iso (ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso) I downloaded, and I ran the cd check before installing. I also ran a memtest for 16 hours with no errors.

So I install Ubuntu, and everything seems ok. Now, I try to update my software packages, and the upgrade always fails after all the packages are downloaded (sometime during actual installation). So, I have to reboot, and the file system will not mount. I run fsck and reboot, and now I cannot even boot normally or to a shell... This has happened to me twice in row.

What is the best plan of attack when a package fails to install midway? I want to use Ubuntu, but this is making it pretty hard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Libpango Upgrade Broke Synaptic?

Mar 4, 2011

I ran a system upgrade today and it froze at "unpacking replacement libpango1-common". It just wouldn't go on. The upgrade kept on showing "unpacking replacement ..", the process used zero CPU time, so I killed it, removed the lock and after Synaptic asked me to, I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a. Now I can't install anything. Everytime I try to, I get an error telling me I should run "sudo apt-get -f install", however, whenever I do that, another endless installation of libpango1.0-common starts. I tried various things like installing that package manually, removing it and so on, but nothing helped. Any advice on how to get my package installation system working again is warmly welcome.

Ubuntu Installation :: Skip Specific Upgrade In Synaptic Package Manager?

Dec 19, 2010

All of a sudden when I ran an update with the usual
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
I got an input / output error for a specific file followed by an exit with dpkg returning error code 1.

In this case the package (ubuntu-docs) is not exactly life threatening, so I would prefer any update process to simply skip that particular package and move onto the ones that are getting held up. I then opened Synaptic Package Manager where I located the erroneous package. I then unmarked the particular package (ie the blob in front of the package name was green, and the status line shows zeroes for all categories (broken, upgrade/install, remove). So far so good. I then found the 'lock version' menu item under the packages menu. I clicked it, and ran the reload thing. After that thought the package was marked for deletion however, and I once again couldn't get by this one bad package.

So (tl/dr perhaps), how can I make Synaptic / apt-get / or whatever to skip this bad package for real so that I can update my system normally going forward? (Why is it that the whole upgrade process is that fragile by the way? Surely there must the the occasional dud package upgrade that people want to skip, no? Having the whole process grind to a halt because of one issue seems border line paranoid to me. Of course on a minimal server installation where every package counts this behavior makes sense perhaps, but on a IMHO bloated plain vanilla ubuntu install?

I just recently installed RT Tracker 3.8.8 on a Centos 5 VM install. I've been running 3.6.6 for more than a year now with no issues. But I'm having some serious slowness issues with 3.8.8. Fedora :: Bugs In Client Computer Abort Entire Experiment

Through no fault with Fedora, bugs in the client computer made me abort the entire experiment. (long story that you don't want to know) Undo all the config, reboot. However I'm now left with an issue that's not earth shattering. Every time I reboot my computer a /Public directory is created in my home directory, this is obviously a legacy from the original NFS setup. I've trawled through log files, looked at config files in /var/lib/nfs, but can find nothing that might be generating this /Public directory at boot time.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mythtv: "Couldn't Open File Abort.dat"

Apr 21, 2010

I've had some problems with MythTV recently, and I realized that this was because my hard drive was full. I traced the problem to my mythbackend.log files, which were several gigabytes in size. The weird thing is that the log files are filling with this:

Code:
2010-04-21 07:47:28.661 Failed to decode frame. Position was: 0
2010-04-21 07:47:28.916 Couldn't open file abort.dat
2010-04-21 07:47:29.170 Failed to decode frame. Position was: 0

[Code]....

I did some research, and this issue appears to normally be associated with commercial flagging problems. However, my commercial flagging jobs all appear to be running normally, and the log fills with this junk even when there are no jobs in the queue and mythcommflag isn't running. To make matters worse, this is difficult to troubleshoot because there is no abort.dat file anywhere on my system. I can see this possibly being a permissions problem with the directory that abort.dat is supposed to be, but I have no clue where that is.

where abort.dat is normally found?

OpenSUSE Install :: Keep Getting "abort Active Session"?

May 25, 2010

For a while now whenever I log off/shutdown I always get a dialogue asking me to abort an active session. Its a root user session on vt3. The strange thing is I can not get to that session for love nor money, going to tty3 I just have a login prompt, I've tried logging in and then logging out but whenever I go to close down again I always get the same dialogue.

I've only just noticed recently that on the login screen (KDE) In the Menu > Switch User dialogue I have the option to switch to a root session on vt3 or the current graphical session on vt7. Yes, I've tried switching to the session there on vt3 and again same as above when switching manually to tty3.

I've recently upgraded from 11.0 to 11.2 64-bit, this is one of the issues I was hoping to get rectified in the upgrade, but I think instead a setting/lock file must be causing confusion somewhere.

Networking :: Ssh Sessions Disconnect "network Error Software Caused Connection Abort" Error - Router?

Aug 6, 2010

Ive recently switched over to AT&T Uverse TV/Internet service and I've noticed that when I ssh into my linux( 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5xen CentOS) server I get disconnected. When I'm using putty it gives the "network error software caused connection abort" error. When I'm at work using one of our jump servers and ssh'ing from the command line it will freeze up from time to time but never disconnects. I think the problem is either with the OS or the new AT&T modem. At first I had my CentOS server using DHCP and it would disconnect within a few minutes after I ssh'ed. I switched over to a static IP and now it goes about 10 minutes before it disconnects. It doesnt matter if I'm actively typing or not, so it's not an inactivity issue. I have the firewall turned off on my laptop, and since the issue happens on multiple devices, including my iphone I dont think thats the issue.

I have iptables and selinux turned off/disabled so thats not it. In putty I have enabled Keep Alive(30 seconds) and it still disconnects. I opened the port on the modem to allow ssh for the IP of the linux server. Ive also recently reinstalled this server with CentOS so I can't compare with the previous internet provider as I didn't reinstall until after I switched over. BUT previous installs with CentOS 5.2 worked fine with the previous ISP. AT&T Modem is a 2wire 3800HGV-B

Ubuntu Servers :: 9.10 To 10.4 Upgrade And LTSP?

Version 9.10 had been installed via the alternate CD as the LTSP Server Edition. In place upgrade to 10.4 completed normally via Update Manager. However, LTSP terminal boot now fails with error "Forbidden directory" and "Access Violation". The following was found . Ubuntu 10.4 uses tftp-hpa. Either this is a change from Ubuntu 9.10 or the default behaviour of tftp-hpa has changed. So now, the filename argument given in /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf must include the full pathname. The previous requirement was to exclude the chroot path. If this is documented somewhere, I missed it. And after modifying /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf, do not forget to restart the dhcp daemon $ sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart

Ubuntu Servers :: LTS Upgrade Via SSH - Crashed ?

May 5, 2010

I have looked around a bit but I can't even get my head around what to do next.

I attempted to upgrade my headless Ubuntu server from 8.4 LTS to 10.4 LTS last night. I used screen so that I could reconnect because the update said that although SSH may crash, I should be able to get back on via port 9004. When I tried to get back on this morning I could not SSH in via port 22 or 9004, so I did the only thing that I felt that I had left--I rebooted. I have since had to dig out an old monitor and keyboard and put a head on it to try and get this problem resolved.

When I boot the computer, GRUB gives me the option of kernel 2.6.32-21-generic-pae, but when I pick that I get the following error and the Caps and Scroll lights on the keyboard just blink.

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)I next have the option of kernel 2.6.32-21-generic-pae (recovery mode), but when I choose that option I get a screen full of time dated lines that do not make any sens to me and that same previous error message somewhere in the middle of it all.

If I try to boot to any of the old kernels, then I get a screen full of error messages and get dropped to an ash shell, BusyBox v1.13.3

Obviously the computer was in the middle of asking me something very important when I rebooted, but without being able to log in, I was never going to find out what that was. I guess I assumed that it wasn't a big deal because all of this was probably sorted out already as a possible chain of events on a headless server upgrade.

The bottom line is that my server no longer works and I do not have a clue as to how to get it up and going. If you have ever experienced this situation and have gotten through it or you actually do know something about this situation, please help me out.

My server is no longer headless, but I am now definitely clueless.
