Ubuntu Servers :: UEC Install On 10.4 Desktop?
May 2, 2010
I recently installed a Ubuntu Server 10.4 on a new machine. This I installed as a cloud node controller.
I wanted to use an existing machine running U 9.10 Desktop (which was a cloud controller, cluster controller, storage controller, and Walrus controller) in that same capacity under the newer UEC. The advertising was compelling with respect to the new 10.4 cloud auto registration based upon E 1.6.2 etc etc. My cloud stopped working.
To make a long story short... Would someone point me at a way to execute the preseed debconf scripts such that I can get the non-node controller configuration set up in the new environment or tell me how I can get a reinstall of the packages to asked the questions and do the config. I am stuck as of now.

I have access to a unmanaged dedicated server on the net. I am considering loading Ubuntu Server to this for web/mail/ftp serving. If I install Ubuntu Desktop to my local machine is it possible for me to administer the server using Ubuntu Desktop (using the GUI)? I connect to the net over ADSL. Any guides/advice for setting up Ubuntu as a web/mail/ftp with a key focus on keeping to secure? I know how to install LAMP but as I have root I need to learn a little more than I did when I was on a shared host.

Is there any way to install a Ubuntu server and access the server remotely via a Ubuntu desktop environment instead of a SSH command line?
I will be installing a Ubuntu server in an office where the office manager will need to be able to do simple things like add/remove users, access filesystems, etc. She can handle these tasks in Ubuntu desktop/GUI, but it is impractical for her to have to learn how to use the CLI terminal to do this stuff.
Will I have to install desktop Ubuntu on the server to do this, or can I install Ubuntu server version and setup another computer Ubuntu desktop to remotely login graphically?

Looking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?

I am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.
Here is the command that I ran:apt-get install xorg gnome-core gdm gnome-applets gnome-system-tools gnome-utils ubuntu-artwork compiz-gnome firefox sysv-rc-conf.The desktop works fine and I can open fire fox, however, the remote desktop is missing from the preferences menu. How can I install this? I would like to add the remote desktop option from a command line.

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

I am a different distribution Linux user but considering to install Ubuntu Server 9.10 to run my personal website.
Question about Ubuntu Server version - does it come with some desktop environment like Gnome or KDE? I would be running Ubuntu Server on my home machine so it would be a nice bonus if I could use it to browse internet or check email.

I am struggling to get my wireless usb working on a fresh installation of Ubuntu Server 10.04, but it works just fine on a fresh install of Ubuntu Desktop 10.04. So I am trying to work out what's causing the discrepancy. I know the Server version is a "minimal install" of Ubuntu, so something must be missing that affects its overall abilities.
I am planning to compare the file system of a totally fresh Desktop version with a Server version - and would appreciate as much additional brain-power as possible to assist in the plan/execution of what I should be comparing. I hope this will throw up a solution as to what is NOT installed/configured on the Server version that prevents my wireless from working. [It will teach me a lot as well ] COMPARISON PLANAll programs installed on both file systems (looking for differences) Program differences which affect network setup and related hardware (I'm not sure of what this list should have on it) Related configuration files which might affect connectivity (same here - not sure what configures what at this stage)
* Do $lsmod to look for installed wireless drivers Miscellaneous tests
* Disable security on wireless router to see if security config is the cause I'm not sure if the kernel build will be different and if so how to establish this... but somehow wonder if this affects the outcome
If anyone is willing to assist in filling out the gaps in this plan I would really appreciate it. Or maybe there is a better way?

turning a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a server. Ok, so let me start off with my goal. I am using this machine for hosting only 1 website using joomla, php, mysql, and apache. I want a desktop version because I dont like the black and white terminal.
At this point I have successfully installed all Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and all updates.
When searching around for this solution, I found that I could run the command sudo apt-get install ubuntu-server and get all the features the server edition has. When running this command it comes back telling me that it cannot be found. I also found that both the server and desktop edition are the same but the desktop edition comes with all the extras that I will need to delete. I also found out that I will need to use lamp on the server to get php and all the other server stuff, but I also found that some people recommended that I install the server apps using the synaptic search. My question is, what route should I take to turn this ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a dedicated web server. (Not Test Server). Remember, I would like to stay with the desktop and not black and white terminal.

I've just installed the ubuntu server system on an old PC i'm going to be using as, you guessed it, a server. Because I like (some) graphical tools while configuring I also installed ubuntu-desktop on it afterwards.
The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? (set the default boot to command-prompt). Also, does anyone have tips on packages I c an safely remove to clear up space and memory? (Like: openoffice, Evolution,Rhythmbox etc. are very obvious, but maybe some more hidden services and alike? Networkmanager e.g.?)

I'm trying to setup my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop to host a small website that I can practice and learn stuff with and I'm a little stuck at the minute.
I have got Apache2 and the LAMP stack installed okay, along with phpMyAdmin and can give my external IP to anyone with the http:// and anyone can view my website that way but what I want to do is have my IP resolve into a domain name like ooloo-website.net but I don't know how to do this.
Is there any way that I can do this like register my IP to a free DNS and domain website without buying a domain or using one of those free ones like ooloo.webhost.net or do I need to host everything myself like DNS and the domain? Can I even do all of this myself?

What's the difference in terms of scalability? We would be hosting videos and FOSS collaboration tools (wiki, forums, etc.) on 4 separate servers. If I install the cloud server, I will need to install the GUI anyways. The servers are all brand new
- 2x Intel Xeon quad cores 2.4 GHz
- 12 GB DDR3 RAM
- 4 Ethernet ports
What benefits would cloud server provide over desktop and vice versa?

AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
but that didn't work. Also, there are no apparent php related files in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled

vote on the best automated deployment for 10.04 lts desktop! have 50units identical pc's, one pdc (openldap, bind, dhcp) and one fs (nfs server). thinking of installing just one pc with all the updates, program addons and stuff, then thinking of: disk image the disk and copy to the rest of the 49units and just edit the host name and activate the etho by sudo mv /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.old would this be ok? i mean there will be no problem if users authenticate an stuff?

I was wondering if it would be secure to add xubuntu-desktop to my server and then open RDP so my colleuges can jump in and out as they need to. Would it bring any major security risks to my server to do this?I have heard there are ways to put a chroot around an RDP session, so it is like logging into a virtual machine, how would I go about that?

In Ubuntu Server 10.04, the kernel naming convention went sort of like "vmlinuz-2.6.32.21-server" for servers and "vmlinuz-2.6.32.21-generic" for desktops... Kernel numbers changing for the kernel version, but last signifying whether it was a desktop or a server version of the kernel... Right? At least as much as I've noticed with my 64bit installs.
I recently got a 32bit test server up on Ubuntu 10.10 and I think I'm either confused, maybe things might be different in 10.10 versions or my prior assumptions were wrong? On this test machine, I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 32bit. After the install, I upgraded packages, then I installed kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop (in that order). I know the implied resource and security issues-- but this was a test machine to work something out. My observation on this machine is that I cannot find a kernel image on it with "...-server". All the versions of kernel images are "...-generic" All my previous installs of Ubuntu Server have been 64bit installs... and I just assumed all server kernels had "...-server" as the naming convention.
- Is this different for 10.10?
- Is this a difference in the 32bit server/64bit server kernel?
- Did my installs of the GUI's somehow change to the desktop kernel? If so, all my testing in now invalidated- as I'm supposed to be testing on the "server kernel."
