I have this scenario, where in I'm calling a shell script inside another shell script. The only criteria here is that the embedded script will have 654 permissions and the master script should be able to execute this embedded script. The sample code is given below:
#!/usr/bin/ksh
maindir=/usr/home01/temp/dir
bindir=${maindir}/batch/bin
${bindir}/test.ksh -d ${dblogin} -i ${datadir} -r ${filedt} > ${tmp_log}
The test.ksh which has 654 permissions is called by the main.ksh script and when I try to run it using ./main.ksh, it fails with the error "Execute permissions denied."

Binary files need only execute permission to execute. No read permission is required. But all executable files must be read by the kernel into main memory before executing. Also script files need both read and execute permissions for executing the file.

I've been looking around the net for executing a shell script. My basic understanding is that after setting executable permissions and providing a path (#!/bin/sh) in the first line of the script, I can type ./myscript to execute instead of sh myscript. This is not working for me. I can run "sh myscript" but not "./myscript" even though I know for sure I have across the board execute permission and my sh path is correct. I'm working on a redhat linux station.

I have the file for Conky Wizard ver.1 but in order to run it to make it executable. From what I know, I'm supposed to right click the file and press properties thego to permissions and check "allow executing as program" However, this option is missing. Here is the link to the ConkyWizard Ver1 Beta 1 file.

I upgraded karmic to lynx today and I'm stuck with some weird behaviour with one of my virtual hosts. The virtual hosts under /var/www/site work but my virtual host for DAVICAL which points to /usr/share/davical/htdocs/ doesn't.
Navigation to any html pages works but php files just show up blank!
Has there been a configuration change in lynx for virtual hosts outside of /var/www?

I have a script which copies(scp) .war file to tomcat's webapps and the .war file extracts creating a folder under webapps directory on a ubuntu system. My next line of the script is restarting the tomcat which is executed immediately before the .war is extracted and this causing problem with
Is it possible so that it waits for few seconds/minutes before it executes the next line of the script. The script is of normal ubuntu commands.

I have a php file that I need to execute via a cronjob. This file should be run by the www-data user as its a file in my /var/www/project folder. When I run this file under root (php -f cron.php) everything works perfectly, but I want it to run under the www-data to be safe. Before I run it vai crontab I tried it via command line as the www-data user and I receive errors:
Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes expired (tried to allocate 232 bytes).
But when I run it as the root user I get no errors and everything works correctly. The file cron.php is used to process automated tasks in my CRM. So I don't really want to have the root user running a crontab every few minutes for this.
Must the www-data user be given more permissions? I am using Ubuntu 6.06LTS
PHP - 5.1.2
Apache - 2.0.55
MySQL - 5.0.22

I extracted the Drupal package (6.20) to /var/www/html and followed the provided install.txt file, but whenever I try to navigate to the site it simply comes up with the PHP script as plain text (it does automatically redirect me to install.php) rather than executing it. PhpMyAdmin works fine, as does a simple PHP "hello world" page I made, so I assume PHP isn't the problem. Now my question is: what could be causing this?
I can't tell for sure if the problem's with Drupal itself (I started over once with no luck) or some setting on my system, but since I don't have an account there I figured I'd ask here first.Running F14 x64, Apache, PHP and MySQL are all at latest versions available.

I have hauppauge pvr-350 which has an mpeg2 decoder with an RGB and s-video out to let me send video to my tv. I'm using the ivtv drivers which work well. To test the card I ran
Code:
cat test.mpeg > /dev/video16
-bash: /dev/video16: Permission denied
So then I did
Code:
ls -l /dev/video16
crw-rw---- 1 root video 81, 5 2010-10-22 12:21 /dev/video16
sudo chmod a+rw /dev/video16
[sudo] password for patrick:
cat test.mpeg > /dev/video16
However the permissions get reset everytime I reboot. Is there any way to pass an argument to the ivtv driver to change the default permissions?

A bunch of my .rtf files suddenly (within the last few days, not sure when) have the "Allow Executing File as Program" box checked under their file Permissions. So whenever I try to open an rtf document, it asks if I want to run it. What's up with that?

I'm sorry if this has been posted already but I REALLY did look and couldn't find the same issue(s) addressed anywhere. Similar, but not similar enough, in my opinion, to barge in and switch the subject.
Ok, I have Apache httpd set up so I can use a public_html folder inside of my /home/username directory. Now, I'm about to take a web dev course that teaches JSP/Servlets for building web applications and I'd like to set my environment up so that I can execute .jsps from my web root (/home/username/public_html) just like I would a CGI or PHP script. I have a web host that will give me JSP support for a few extra bucks a month, but I'd rather do it locally... and free.
I have Tomcat installed and running wonderfully. The test page and all the examples work fine and execute immediately. But when I try to execute a .jsp file inside of my web root (/home/username/public_html) I just get the raw Java tags and plain-old HTML rendered in my browser. I pretty much knew that wouldn't work; that'd be way too easy. I just wanted to see what would happen.
I looked through all the tomcat ".conf" files I could find to see if it was similar to setting up httpd inside of my home directory, but I didn't have any luck. It's not a file permissions problem... I've been messing with web "scripts" long enough to check that the files are executable. All of the files needed (borrowed from the examples that come with Tomcat) were in their correct paths inside of my web root, as well. Added :8080 to the end of localhost (like you do to see the Tomcat test page(s) instead of the httpd test page) but that didn't help.
I scoured the web for directions but could only find one solution that was Ubuntu-specific (just install tomcat6-user-something-or-another.deb, which doesn't exist in the Fedora repos), then I looked around here, trying every search term that seemed reasonable to me, and I can't find anything.
I realize I can just write the code and put it in a directory that does allow these things to be executed (var/lib/tomcat6/blah-blah-blah/going-by-memory) and run them from there, but I'd like to be able to just keep all of my web files in the same place; a place where I have full permission to do whatever I want... my home directory public_html.
Is this possible (has to be, right?)? Is this a dumb idea to begin with (I'm prone)? What is the best way to develop JSP/Servlets without having to deal with permissions every time I want to put a new script in a directory outside of my home directory that's already set up to allow the execution of said script?

on certain folders on a samba-server I would like to allow everyone everything.(Note: This refers to the filesystem-permissions. External security is cared for by samba. No problem here)That means: every local user and every remote user should be able to fully create, delete and modify every file in certain folders and all subfolder of these folders. This should include file contents and timestamps and permissions. And it should include modifying files owned by someone else, again meaning create/delete/modify/timestamp etc.

I have set up a new IP specifically for SSH and configured SSHD_Config accordingly to listen on this new interface and a specific port. However when I reboot SSH is not starting. Looking in the syslog it shows that it is unable to start. It looks like its trying to listen on the interface before it is set up.
Code:
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (601) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (610) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (618) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh respawning too fast, stopped
I am able to start SSH manually once the server is booted. Do I need to set up my interfaces differently to ensure they are available prior to SSH starting somehow? I don't want to change my ssh config to listen on all addresses.

I have an iSCSI target on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server that is giving me access to 3 x 2TB volumes. I am using LVM to create 1 big volume and using it as a place for my backup software to write to. Upon initial setup I tested to see if the connection would still be there after a reboot, and it was. After going through the trouble of configuring my backup software (ZManda) and doing a few very large backups I had to reboot my SAN (OpenFiler) for hardware reasons. I took my server down while performing the maintenance and brought it back up only after the SAN work was done. Now, the LVM volume is listed as "not found" when booting.
Using iscsiadm I can see the target but LVM doesn't know of any volumes that exist using those targets. I need to get it back up and running and then troubleshoot the reboot issue.

I have a LAMP server running Ubuntu 8.04.03 Server edition running smoothly. Ive setup several websites on the server and all are ok, but I constantly have trouble with permissions. Everytime I setup a new domain to host, I setup a user specific to that domain. This allows SSH login specific to the domain. The problem I have is that every time I setup ownership in the virtual directories for the users they belong to, the settings don't seem to stay. Initially it seems to work ok, but when I install Joomla and setup the webspace, I always seem to have to login to the server itself to chmod the folders I need to have writable. I cant chmod properly from my FTP client which is weird. How to manage permissions?
Currently I am doing the following:
Code:
sudo mkdir -p {name of domain}/{public,private, etc...}
sudo usermod -g www-data {my user name}
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/{directory for the domain}
sudo chmod -R 775 {folder path I need to change}
This works for a while but as I add new things to Joomla and I want to modify the folders, I always have to go back and redo the chmod and the chown commands to get them where I want.

I have a recently setup my first linux server (hardy) and am having problems with the permissions for a log file being changed. I believe this is caused by syslogd, but am not sure how to correct it. Bacula will report it is unable to start a backup because it is unable to open the log file (/var/lib/bacula/log) "permission denied". After changing the owner from syslog to bacula, the backup will resume. However, the following day I encounter the same problem because the owner of the log has been changed back to syslog.I see where the permissions for logs are altered in sysklogd, but I am not certain how to make bacula exempt or if this is the right approach.

Is ACL the best way to ensure the permissions of newly created files? Basically I have a directory: /data/department
I've done chmod g+s on it so the group is correct on new files but I want new files to also have 775 permissions so the rest of the group can access these files fully. Currently they are created with the default 755 (which I want still every where out side of /data/department ).

Trying to setup a file server for a small group of users and I am in need of help with file permissions with Ubuntu Server 10.10.
I have a single share mapping (ex /media/hdd1/share1). There are several folders that everyone will need read/write/edit permissions and there will be a few folders that all users will need read permissions and a couple of users will need read/write/edit permissions.
I have tried several things and as long as I create the folders/files through ssh using sudo, the permissions are fine, but when the users create file and folders through their computers (mixture of Windows and Mac) that user becomes the owner and no one else can write or edit those files.
I am using SAMBA and though it was a config issue with that but I logged each user directly into the server with the same issue.
I tried sudo chmod 777 /media/hdd1/share1 but all newly created files have the above issue.
