Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 - Correct Procedure To Move LXC Container
May 6, 2010
I have a Ubuntu 10.04 server configured with an lxc container also running 10.04. I wonder if somebody knows the correct procedure to move such a container to another server? I tried a straight rsync both with the source up and down but mysql won't start on boot after move and if I manually start it none of the websites within the container are able to connect to mysql. I can connect to mysql using telnet of the command line client.

I downloaded an FLV video and placed an extra MP3 file over it. Two files. Total: 30 MBI experimented with about seven rendering containers, and QuickTime renderer was the only rendering container that didn't result in sped-up/compressed video or correct rendering for just fifteen seconds.How in the name of all that is holy did this rendering end up with 570 extra MB?

What is the correct/safe way to move from upstart to systemd? I originally installed upstart in 11.3 and have now upgraded to 11.4. Having successfully upgraded to 11.4 I tried to use yast2 to install systemd and systemd-sysvinit onto my running system. Yast correctly identified that upstart should be deinstalled as a prerequisite for installing systemd-sysvinit.
After the install of systemd the system wouldn't shut down, and on a reset the system reported many systemctl/start service timeouts on things such as mounts and ttys. Eventually the system started an X-windows KDM login, but there were no console ttys and mounts were missing. I used X/kdm to login to root - phew! - I restored / from an rsync backup I'd made prior to the changes, so I'm back in business with upstart. I'd like to tidy up and move to systemd - I going to have a nose around myself, perhaps I will try switching back to sysv init and then going to systemd - but I have to wait for the machine to be idle before I experiment, any info in the mean time would be great.

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

how to access a FTP server with php. I've written a script from a tutorial but I'm getting errors with the ftp_get function.
PHP Code:
[code].....
Warning: ftp_get() [function.ftp-get]: Error opening /var/www/download.txt/ in /var/www/gwr/connect.php on line 11
I'm having trouble with the ftp_get function and I believe the problem is with the local server path. In this case var/www/download.txt I've also used a folder in that directory called download in the place of the .txt file and it gives the same errors. Is var/www/ the correct path to tell php where to download the files to? I've experimented with the files permission and nothing has worked. I'm running a standard ubuntu desktop install, Karmic Koala.

I'm setting up a svn server and would like users to share home dir. One problem is how to get sshd to identify the correct rsa key for the different users that shares the same .ssh folder. Will sshd even look for the key in a folder that isn't owned by the user trying to login?

I cannot sudo nor log into a second ssh session on my Ubuntu 10.10 server edition headless setup. Entering an incorrect password works as expected but the correct password gives errors, and on the second attempt a segfault. I recently changed my password as the old one was about to expire, that was 3 days ago, I can't find evidence that I have sudo'ed or logged in a second session since, I have been logged into it via ssh throughout all of it and I am still currently logged in. What should I do to correct this problem? I'm worried that by turning it off I will lose all access. Is the only option using a live cd to change the password?

Centos 5.4 64bit fully updated. What I am doing is vsftpd is setup and nfs shares are mounted to a NAS server which is running openfiler 2.3 fully updated. openfiler is winbind to AD and pulling users and groups over.
I have it confirmed working when a ftp users connects the username/password is authenticated against AD which works. User can login and is directed to the users folder on the nfs share.
Openfiler shows me UID and GID numbers for users and groups, centos also shows me UID and GID but they are different which is causing permissions/quota's to not work right.
Both servers are setup with krb and winbind, openfiler has a more recent version of winbind.
Here is an example...
AD Users are
user UID of 160010 as an example
user1 UID 160011
When user logs into the vsftp server it works and chrooted into the directory for that user. When user uploads files I can upload but the UID in the ftp client shows 1600011 which is user1 UID
logging into windows to that share shows in the security tab that user1 uploaded the files.
Centos is mapping user as 160011
openfiler is mapping user as 160010
windows is showing the user1 in the security tab.
So it appears that centos is not mapping the right numbers to the right users and groups.
If you need details please ask for it and I will provide.
Both configs are nearly a match and I have made small changes to the config files smb.conf but it failed resolve these issues to work so I reverted back. kinit works with authentication, getent works, wbinfo -a and -u works. wbinfo -u user shows different results on both servers, but authentication works user/password and I tried a different password to test.
Is this a known bug or a silly misconfiguration? I had authentication GUI tool configure the winbind stuff so its all fairly standard on the centos machine and the openfiler gui configure winbind configs.

i use virtual hosts to develop several web applications. These are located in my home folder under /home/user/projects/project After a fresh installation, i always get a 403 forbidden error. After googling and reading on this forum, several solutions are mentioned for this problem. But i can hardly believe putting using a chmod 755 on my home folder is a correct solution. What is the correct way of doing things in this situation?

I've been poking at the options in mdadm and dmraid for 2 hours now and don't see exactly what I need. (and trying things I'm not 100% sure of would be silly)
2 drive raid1 array. moved to another box running the same version of Ubuntu. (10.04)
I've googled and googled and can't find anyone else with this same task - what am I missing? The array is physically fine and doesn't need rebuilding, unless in this context it does somehow.
The two devices are sdb and sdc.
Output of mdadm -Es:
Code:
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=97e83cac:4d76d392:e368bf24:bd0fce41
So the array is somehow visible, but I don't see what my next step needs to be.

When I use firefox, I accumulate multiple plugin-container processes, typically one of them sits around hanging onto well over 200 MB of RAM. I think this happens when I watch flash videos. Does simply having a flash app on a web page cause a plugin-container process to be created? Will they ever go away without my explicitly killing them or closing firefox? If they stay around, do they ever free any RAM?

ok I have the original install 170GB partition mounted on /
I need the following;
OS on / 30 GB
data mounted on / data 140GB
Fdisk would have been a joke, but the box was setup via lvm, so I am learning on the fly. I was able to shrink the partition using;
lvreduce -L 30G /dev/mapper/server-root
vgcreate shows;
VG Size 169/76GiB
Alloc PE / Size 9453 / 36.93GiB
Free PE / Size 34005 / 132.83 GiB
Now, per my DBA, I need that 130 on a seperate 'partition' and I am not 100% sure on the next step. I am reading on vgcreate, lvcreate, etc.

I'm looking for ideas on how to transfer a group of xml files from one server to another server, either in a regular interval or ?I have a listing program, it creates a directory or classified ad type listing. When one of these is created, or an existing one is edited an XML file is created. I need to take these files and get them to another server. I've read about SOAP, FOPEN and of course FTP.

So I know that Mac OSX post-production and Linux post-production are very different things. I'm hoping to give editing on Linux with Cinelerra a try and I'm wondering, what in FFMpeg's array of codec and container support is widely understood to be the best combination for editing video. I'm looking for the most lossless option so H.264 won't do. Is there a good Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple Pro Res equivalent? Is AVCHD the answer?

I'm in the middle of moving my lab to a new server in the middle of the school year.. and need to copy all the user accounts to the new box, hopefully with all the student's passwords and contents of their folders intact.And since we are using the system daily, I need to do it all in an hour or 2.I'm thinking I can just
1. diff /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow from the old the new
2. copy all the student folders to new /home
3. write a script to set the permissions on all the new /home folders to match the user names.
It seems easy and safe so long as I back up the 2 existing files..Any reason not to try? Or is there an easier way?

i have a complete local ubuntu mirror; nicely kept in sync by apt-mirror. unfortunately, i need to keep some of the old releases as well. [URL].. kindly provides those. with the upcoming end-of-life of intrepid ibex, i would like to move the packages for intrepid on my mirror to the directory i use for the old-releases, without having to download these approximately 30GB from the original server.
is there a way to move distributions in a local mirror? apt-move seems only capable of rearranging the packages in /var/cache/apt/archives/ .

I have a software raid array (in this test case a mirrored set of two 500GB volumes) and I want to move them to another OS installation on the same hardware. (This is testing in preparation for a physical move two arrays onto a single server.) I had the array up and working (surviving reboots), wrote a test backup onto it in a folder.
Shut the machine down, re-installed ubuntu, got it up and running, then installed mdadm, rebooted with the array powered up and ran mdadm --detail --scan , expecting to see mdadm at least find the parts of the array. Instead, I get nothing. I even added -vv to get more verbose output. de nada.

I have an old C application in which i am trying to include some STL cointainers. When i use the STL container alone it works fine, but when i include it into a C struct i have segmentation faults errors. I know that it is not a good idea to mix C and C++. Considering this code:
Code:
typedef struct{
int shmid;
...
APPLSPACETYPE applSpace;
[code]...
and how to make a malloc for this issue; something like :
Code:
mem->applSpace.rData.completeGroups2zeroGroup=(map_completeGroups2zeroGroup_type *)malloc((sizeof(map_completeGroups2zeroGroup_type)+1)* sizeof(char ));

We are running into issues with a File Upload script written in PHP. We can upload files without issues except with .*x files (such as .docx) We are getting permission denied errors. The error occurs when we use move upload file, to the new directory within our PHP app. If we give the uploads folder 777 access, it works fine without error. I dont like that. So I set it to 775 (Also dont like this), but it didnt work until I gave group ownership to www-data (I really dont like this)
This issue only happens on our production server, which is Ubuntu 9.04, running Apache2.2 and PHP5 will all the newest updates. We also have all MIME's configured, and are able to download the file from Apache without error. The first thing we noticed before the file permissions error, was that the MIME type changed to .zip when we used mime content type function. But yet using the FILES array, it still showed .docx.

my current plan is to create a truecrypt container with the whirlpool hash. This container will be located on a hdd that is not where my OS will be located (so a separate physical sata drive).My concern is when this container is accessed, that some of the password information could be stored in my swap partition (which is on the main drive where the OS "/" is located)
I would like to have a script or command I could run that after I unmount those drives (or just halt the system) that my swap (and ram too if possible) could be wiped (or like overwritten with the shred command). Also, am I going about this the right way, or should I just use truecrypts FDE on the entire drive? In addition, when Ubuntu does it's default install, does it create a swap file in addition to a swap partition? If it does, would that be another vulnerability? If it is, how do I prevent this from happening?
I welcome any input you have on this. I am aware that once the drive is mounted, it is vulnerable, but I want the data to be secure as possible once my computer is turned off. Also, I have read that there are ram exploits where it holds your passwords for up to a few minutes after you turn the machine off, does anyone know how long that it and is there a way to clear it, or will only time let it fade?

I am using DVD::rip to convert some instructional DVD's to .avi (xvid + mp3). I have never used this app before but its seems fairly straight forward and easy to use. I am able to convert 1 title from the DVD to 1 avi file. One DVD however has 19 titles which vary from 3-5 minutes in length. My question is, can I convert all or at least some titles to a single .avi file and if so how?
