I will be installing a Ubuntu server in an office where the office manager will need to be able to do simple things like add/remove users, access filesystems, etc. She can handle these tasks in Ubuntu desktop/GUI, but it is impractical for her to have to learn how to use the CLI terminal to do this stuff.
Will I have to install desktop Ubuntu on the server to do this, or can I install Ubuntu server version and setup another computer Ubuntu desktop to remotely login graphically?

During the install, I accidentally chose to install "Desktop environment" when I meant to de-select it (I hit enter, which was obviously the wrong key to de-select) so what should I do now? Should I restart the install, and be more careful the next time the task selector comes up? Dec 7, 2010I have two computers on my home lan I am trying to share files between...My desktop which is running Ubuntu Server 10.10 (x64) with a GUI, and my laptop which is running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04. I have tried a million different tutorials regarding SAMBA setup, but they never work.
In addition, most of those tutorials are geared towards hybrid Linux/Windows environment. I do not have any microsoft product in my home. I have created the share on my server, but I'm not sure how to connect to it from the laptop (once again at this point in the tutorials it explains how to access it from a Windows PC). I tried using the menu doing this:
Places-->Connect To Server-->Service Type-->Windows Share (for the server I tried my server hostname and IP) to no avail. Does anyone know of a recent step by step tutorial for setting up a complete Ubuntu environment? Is there a simpler method I can use since I do not particularly need to use SMB protocol?
All I want to do is share my music folder from my server so I can access it (from the same LAN) on my laptop...Arrrghhh frustrating.

I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)
I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.
I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

Jul 9, 2010It's my first experience with *nix OS. I needed server for following purposes:
Fileserver on samba
Internet gateway
VPN gateway
DNS
I installed ubuntu 10.04 server edition, but wasn't able to work without graphical environment. So I installed gnome. I installed and tweaked samba and bind9 and network manager and all works fine for now.
So I have a question. What will happen if I remove gnome? Especially with network manager? And what will I gain in performance. It's important because I have only an old Dell Optiplex 150 (933/512/10) serving as a server.

Oct 28, 2010turning a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a server. Ok, so let me start off with my goal. I am using this machine for hosting only 1 website using joomla, php, mysql, and apache. I want a desktop version because I dont like the black and white terminal.
At this point I have successfully installed all Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and all updates.
When searching around for this solution, I found that I could run the command sudo apt-get install ubuntu-server and get all the features the server edition has. When running this command it comes back telling me that it cannot be found. I also found that both the server and desktop edition are the same but the desktop edition comes with all the extras that I will need to delete. I also found out that I will need to use lamp on the server to get php and all the other server stuff, but I also found that some people recommended that I install the server apps using the synaptic search. My question is, what route should I take to turn this ubuntu 10.04 desktop into a dedicated web server. (Not Test Server). Remember, I would like to stay with the desktop and not black and white terminal.
