Server :: Connect With Any Ftp Software It Accepts The Username But Rejects Any Password?
Apr 25, 2010Ok I am new to all this, I did have a server years ago but have forgotten most of what I learned. My problem is getting ftp to connect to the server. I have centos and it has proftpd but I'm lost when it comes to the conf file. I created a user in plesk but when I try to connect with any ftp software it accepts the username but rejects any password. I have tried a million combinations but I just can't get my head around this. I have used it before many years ago and managed ok but that was using webmin. I feel I've bitten off more than I can chew with this server although I have managed everything else

Dec 15, 2010I have this problem with my wifi for 2 weeks now.It used to work great and after some updates the Network Manager keeps rejecting my wpa passwords. The wifi card is working (tested with other OS's) and the wifi light on my HP laptop is on. I have installed broadcom drivers.The problem is similar with this one here but changing from default kernel to desktop didn't work in my case. have already read through Getting your Wireless to work and Broadcom instructions

Mar 26, 2010I use fedora 12. I am facing this problem. Not exactly a problem but I can sure use a work around.
I usually connect to wireless network. The connection is automatic so whenever the connection goes down, it is automatically restored.
But sometimes, the connection goes down, nm-applet asks me to enter the password and will not proceed until I have entered the password. I have observed that this usually happens when the request to connect takes a long time or the wifi router does not respond immediately.
Is there way to change this behaviour? I want nm-applet to keep trying until its connected and not ask me for a password. This way I can be sure that my laptop is always connected and does not need my intervention.

Oct 22, 2010I know this has probably been asked too many times here but I need to secure my emails. Personal matters of course. But yeah. I use the program "Password and Encryption Keys" to generate a key to sign my emails with but I do not know what to do. To be blunt, I'm stupid when it comes to this. IF not, steps in creating a key? and giving it (my public key) to the significant other? Finding where both keys are? Implementing it into Thunderbird? Apr 11, 2009I have a FC10 installation with GNOME and NetworkManager and a wireless card. Everything works ok. However, when I try and setup gdm to do autologon I get the NetworkManager applet asking for the password for the gnome-keyring to get the wireless details. Since I want to use this machine as a sever this is unacceptable as I won't be around to type in the password. I tried the solution at [URL] but this does not work. I still get the password being requested and the keyring password is the same as the logon password. Can anyone say if there is a workaround that works to get the NetworkManager to be able to read the gnome keyring without having to prompt me for it.

Apr 30, 2010I have a minor problem with my "Update Applet 2.28.0" in Gnome. It occurs when I want to make the applet do one or more suggested update(s). It always asks me for the password of superuser/root: "Authenticate : Authentication is required to update packages. [...]". I think under my installation before (11.1 maybe updated from an older version) I could tell the automatic/semi automatic updater to remember the su password (in YaST or in the authentication dialog?).
In the help manual on my computer (and in the internet) there is the possibility to make the updater remember the password via policy kit: ("Access to all privileged operations is controlled via PolicyKit." See: GNOME Documentation Library : gnome-packagekit Manual : Introduction) I could not find any policy kid or any other possibility to give to the automatic updater (or its user) that privilege permanently (=to remember authorization). I think on a system with more (real) users this could be a real problem (not just an inconvenience).
CentOS 5 :: Revelation Password Manager Panel Applet Missing?
May 31, 2010I'm running 5.5 on one DT 32bit and am just trying it on a Dell laptop. 64bit. Both are current in update terms.
Having just got Revelation 0.4.11 working on the laptop, I notice that the panel applet, 'Revelation Account Search' is not available, whereas it is still listed on the DT.
Firstly, why would this be and secondly, is it possible to copy this across because I find it really useful?
Ubuntu Security :: Changing Password Seem To Be Potential Security Hazard?
Aug 3, 2010I already posted a topic similar to this concerning the Desktop OS version, but this deals with the Netbook because unlike the Desktop, the Netbook is less cooperative. Allow me to elaborate: Today (or rather yesterday since it's not after midnight where I am), I changed my password because I was hopelessly confounded about how to get my Wireless Network card up and running after it had been installed and I was allowing my dad to use it. This issue has since been resolved, however...
When I chose my password during the original installation, there was no mention of it being "too simple." This is where the Desktop OS and the Netbook OS differ. The desktop will let me change it in the terminal without any errors. The Netbook will not. When I've attempted to revert it back to the original, it will not let me do so in the User Profile or in the Terminal. The Passwords and Encryption Keys application also does not appear to help.
So now even after I've changed it to a different "complicated" password I am still prompted to insert two different passwords since I changed my user password but I am unable to change the password I input during the installation. A bit screwy methinks. This is extremely important. I'd like to know how to change the original installation password.
If I can't change the main password on my laptop then this is a serious potential security breach just waiting to happen (especially since it's on a laptop and I will be hauling it around with me) and I will most likely install a different OS if this isn't resolved --- It would be very unfortunate since I spent the whole day fixing it and I really enjoy the interface. Luckily I can live with this on my Desktop since I'm not going to be hauling it around with me everywhere when the school year starts.
Security :: Find Password Or Circumvent The Password Altogether?
Oct 1, 2010I have a database created by an older program (not Access) that I need to open and retrieve information for my business. The manufacturer put a password on there so that only it's program could open it. I do not use that program, but it has information I need. Is there a way to find that password or circumvent the password altogether?

Aug 6, 2011[URL]So just a little while ago I got sick of win7 starter's sluggishness and inability to successfully display my java eclipse output and decided to switch to linux.I'm using LiLi USB Creator to make my live USBs.First I tried out arch linux which was going absolutely fantastic until I realized that I needed to use a custom kernel to get my wireless working, and without my wireless working (and no idea how to properly mount any sort of external drive in linux) there was no way I'd be able to install the kernel.
So I gave up and decided to try Ubuntu. I created the live usb just fine and tried to boot from it. It went past the bios screen and to the blinking command line underscore, which stopped blinking for a moment. At that point a line of text popped up highlighted in purple and then green for a split second (it could have been green and then purple). After the text, the netbook hung displaying a command line underscore that blinked.
I left it for several hours and it did nothing.Then I tried puppy linux, which froze on the previous text (which did not look anything like an error message, but I don't remember what it said).Then I tried Fedora(edited from debian, which I have not tried), which behaved the same as Ubuntu.I don't know what to try anymore... if this all fails I'll probably go install either XP or OSX (Probably XP, I can't stand safari).
Server :: Samba Rejects Client Passwords?
Dec 8, 2010So a while back I decided I wanted to get to know Linux a little bit and I figured the most immediately useful thing for me would be a small home server. About this time I discovered plug computers and I eventually bought myself a Guruplug for this purpose - a small, cheap, power-efficient ARM architecture thing running Debian 5.0.6. Since then I've kind of ambled along with the project as and when time permitted (installing, tweaking, scouring manpages and tutorials is fun, but takes a lot of time), and have now finally got a nice big external harddrive formatted as ext3 and hooked up to it. The time seemed right to go for the samba install. I installed from the Debian repository, configured using SWAT and immediately hit problems.
Since the only user is me and the only access to the computer is over SSH, I have few accounts - there's root which I've disabled from access altogether, there's my sudoer account magnus, and there's my new test account magnus-smb. This one is a standard user, and has identical Unix password and samba password (added with smbpasswd). I intend to keep this up with a separate samba-access account - I'm a little paranoid about allowing any kind of access to sudoer accounts and won't even let SSHD accept password based logins.
Setting up samba, I basically tried to make it do as little as I needed to get a local file server going. The only share is homes, and its path goes to my external drive. The drive itself is mounted as rw,noexec,user from fstab.
Now, with all of that set up I'd hoped I'd be able to mount my homes shares and go. This proved not to be the case - if I set encrypted passwords = yes, my Windows 7 clients behave differently. The magnus account connects but can't authenticate - all passwords are rejected. The magnus-smb account is apparently accepted but then receives a "network path not found" error. If I set it to no, both accounts are prevented from even attempting to authenticate, and I get an error message about "this account is not approved for logging on from this station" (translation from Norwegian). I've been searching around but not finding much. I did find one article claiming this was easier after samba 3.3 and discovered that my manpages said samba 3.2. Yesterday I therefore decided to reinstall samba from source, only to find that the current stable release (3.5) also claims to be version 3.2 in it's manpages, so I probably might as well not have bothered. Oh well, at least I've installed something from source now.

Fedora Networking :: IPtables Rejects Rules Upon First Boot
Jan 25, 2010I am trying solve a strange problem which ocurred after upgrading many packages including kernel and iptables.This is a Fedora 10 PC acting as a small home-server I've been using over a year without problems. Recently, I've run a yum upgrade and after that, connections outside home wouldn't work. No changes in IPtables (firewall) rules have been done. But connection through local network is working.Symptom is.I've connected to my second PC at home and connected to the server. It works fine on local network. I restart network services (service network restart) and outside connections could be established.I have disabled iptables and ip6tables and after reboots it works fine. But PC is running without firewall.

Dec 27, 2010Background:I have a small PC104 running opensuse 11.1. I'm writing a small client/server application for debugging purposes using mono and WCF. All the client does is make a request for information every 100ms.Problem:After about 20 requests the server quits responding to the client. Even if the client is running on the same machine. I've run the exact code on another laptop running opensuse as well as a laptop running windows and everything works great. Hopefully that closes the option that it is a code, mono, or opensuse flaw.Is there a kernel option or a network option that anyone knows about that might cause this sort of behavior?

Ubuntu :: Conflict Between Indicator Applet And Notification Area Applet?
May 15, 2011I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.

Ubuntu :: Restoring Nm-applet To 10.04 Indicator Applet?
May 3, 2010I removed the "indicator applet" from the default gnome panel at the top of the default Lucid desktop. Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!

But when I click the close button in the main users and groups window, it is asking for my password, and I am forced to enter my old password only.
After the window is closed, i logout to check whether my password is changed. But it is not. I have to enter my old password to login.

Aug 27, 2010I had this great idea to try and change the UBUNTU password. So I took not so drastic effort..I went to System>Administration>Users and Groups. There I clicked on my login name.Clicked on Properties and used the Change Password Button to Change my login password. I did that. [I thought this is the way to change the login password]. After that as usual I tried to launch the Empathy! It started asking me about some Keyring password! I gave my new password and it worked. Now, the weirdness of the issue is that..

I want to stop empathy from asking me about the KEYRING thing. Roll back the system to the previous state; before the password change thing. What exactly went wrong or right? and What is really happening to my system. I mean things are all normal, so far..but why the two passwords? I dont use any heavy things on my machine..just a bit of browsing and Empathy..thats all.and only the default applications are installed on my machine. I use Ubuntu Karmic 9.10.
