Security :: Iptables -L Does Not Show In-interface Or Out-interface?
Feb 26, 2011When I do...# iptables -L...I see rules in my INPUT and OUTPUT chains that look scary:ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere...but these rules only apply to the loopback interface. I tested it and the server cannot be reached on open ports from the outside world. How can I make iptables show the interfaces that the rules apply to?Otherwise, every time I do iptables -L it will scare the crap out of me.

Aug 12, 2010I have a server with 14 IP's on eth0. I'm using virtual interfaces to handle the IP's, but the iptables don't seem to work on the virtual interface. It blocks ports that I want open. I'm not that great with iptables, I use what I have because it works for me, but as far as tweaking it, I'm pretty lost.

Oct 23, 2009When I was looking for a tool that analyzes iptables log files I couldn't find anything suitable for me. So I wrote a python script that does the job. Now I'd like to have some feedback (questions, comments, bugs, wishes etc.). You have to set up some things manually. You need a MySQL table for example. And if you want to have reverse DNS (can be disabled) it is greatly recommended to install pdnsd as a local dns (caching) server for better results. (easy setup). If you do, it will take some time (depending on the log size) to receive the hostnames. The tool saves the DNS hostnames, so next time an identical IP is found, the lookup will be instant. All needed options can be configured in the config file or via command line parameter. A feature overview and more detailed information is included in the tarball README and INSTALL file. [URL]

my wireless interface got ip from another server like 192.168.1.3 ,now if i do ping on my target board for 192.168.1.1 it goes through wireless interface to the 192.168.1.1 wireless server.but when i do the same from target board connected linux pc its not pinging from linux pc i could able to ping to 192.168.1.3 but not 192.168.1.1 .I think i need to write a iptable rule properly on my target board to forward the 192.168.1.* packtes to wireless interface.

Mar 22, 2010I am trying to do something outlandish with iptables (or so I think!).I have a source sending udp packets to a destination (say dst11). Using port mirroring I am able to get all these packets to a different machine (say dst22). I am able to see these packets on dst22 interface using tcpdump.I want to analyze the packets on dst22. So what I do is put dst22 interface in promiscuous mode (using ifconfig eth0 promisc). This in theory should get the packet through the MAC layer. Now using iptables I am trying to DNAT the packets in nat prerouting to change the packets destination IP to dst22's interface and change the destination port.

May 18, 2010I suspect this is one of these questions from Window users who see something different in Ubuntu.
My understanding is that the Ubuntu firewall (iptables) is always on. However, the GUI client (firestarter) shows this more obviously.
I suppose I am used to ZoneAlarm in XP where everything was displayed more obviously.
So, iptables in not automatically displayed, but is working, right?

Jun 20, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as a VM in Hyper-V, and accessing it via VNC with a machine in the same broadcast domain. I'm using OpenVPN to connect to XeroBank. I have instructions for configuring iptables to permit establishing and using the XeroBank connection, while blocking all other traffic on eth0. I've followed them successfully. I need to also permit the VNC connection, and haven't managed that. FWIW, the VM is at 192.168.111.12::5900 and the workstation is 192.168.111.2.
The attachment to this post lists the recommended contents for each Shorewall file. Which files need changed, and what do I add to each?

Feb 28, 2011I've recently installed 10.10 server edition, and I must say it was a pleasant suprise, it's just the way I like it. I use it as a squeezebox-server. But I've run into a problem with the firewall. I did a portscan, which told me there are more ports open then I've told UFW to open. Among which port 25 and 119, when I telnet from another PC to those ports, the connection gets accepted, although there is no answer to any commands (as expected, there's no mail server running). Iptables print-outs also don't mention anything about the respective ports or a daemon that could be responsable, and the same applies to "ps -e" or "ps aux".
Iptables seems to be working, when I remove the rules to allow samba to work, I can't reach the shares, and when I insert them again I can reach the shares. "sudo ufw deny from any" as last rule doesn't change anything either (deny incoming is default (although I never issued the command "ufw status verbose" says it is) so it shouldn't, but ports 25 and 119 shouldn't be open either).

Apr 1, 2011Rather than use pfsense, etc I decided to create my own router/proxy etc based on an atom base with 2 nics.Proxy/routing/dns/etc all working fine, I now though want to lockdown the fw rules.ETH1 is the WAN NICETH2 is the LAN NICI'm guessing i want to allow anything out of ETH1, but only allow incoming to ETH1 when its established or related... What about ETH2 though? Any ideas pls? Am used to configuring iptables on single nic, certainly not a router.

Then I wanted to secure my server with iptables, and I have so far made this script:
