Ubuntu Security :: Bookmark Manager - Which One To Use?
Nov 26, 2010
I used to use xmarks but that is about to end so i tried firefox sync but that requires firefox to have 'remember history' to work and i dont like this-i use 'private browsing'. So what other managers are there to use for bookmarks? Ive recently taken up usage of lastpass for passwords-anyone know if lastpass will do bookmarks soon as well?
I have used JellyfiSSH on Mac OSX which basically stores your ssh connection details so you can quickly open connections using the built in SSH client to various servers without having to type in all the details, is there are similar thing available for linux? I am using Ubuntu.
I am looking for a standalone bookmark management application as I need to use different browsers on occasion and don't want to store my bookmarks on one of the web based services.
Ideally this would be a server client type arrangement that would store my bookmarks on my server which I could connect to through a client, or an ncurses based application, that I can store, tag and sort my bookmarks on.
I am aware of Sitebar which offers their server software, however their plug-in is firefox, IE, and maxthon only at present. In an added complication there seems to be a conflict with one of my other firefox add-ons.
During the past eight years I've used a number of computers with different operating systems and browsers. On each one I made a habit of using the bookmark utility of each browser and saving the bookmarks file. I never ensured the continuity of the bookmark file - with each new computer I started a new bookmark file. Even when I was reinstalling the operating system I didn't import the old bookmark file in the newly installed browser: I've always started a new bookmark file. As a result I have tens of bookmark files for Firefox (json format - some kind of xml?) and IE (html file format?) each one containing hundreds or thousands of saved links. I have also some files containing links in text format (created usually when I was using someone else computer).
I would like to be able to manage this bookmarks files by using some sort of "bookmark manager" software. The "bookmark manager" should be able to merge the bookmark files into a single collection/file. It should be able to identify and remove the duplicate entries (I have timely versions of the same bookmark file) and also it should be able to group the entries/links on categories (for example the bookmarked articles on codeproject.com should be grouped under the codeproject category). Not to mention that it should provide a search facility to quickly locate the interesting bookmarks. I couldn't find such software in ubuntu software center. Do you know something that even comes close to what I need?
My workplace recently switched to Active Directory for our netdisk space (I work at a University in the US). The "only way" (recommended) by our IT department is to use a cifs protocol. I've had absolutely no luck with that at all. However, it turns out that there is secure WebDAV protocol setup which works well on campus. If I'm off campus I have to connect via a VPN connection; our school uses Cisco Anyconnect 2.3.0254. It works well for me to connect to a printer, etc on campus.
Here's my problem: I can't connect to my netdisk space from off-campus using the Secure WebDAV bookmark that was working oncampus, even when I am connected via the VPN connection. I am using UFW. Is there a port I need to open up, or am I missing something else?
i updated both browsers i have and lost my secure log-in pages (no padlocks showing ) concerning different Web mail accounts.Just before i did these updates i checked an unrelated thing on-line regarding my sound card of which i kept a copy of and got this message below :
!!ALSA/HDA dmesg !!------------------ [ 12.762633] cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: AM
bookmark sync function in Ubuntu One? I already installed xul-bindwood and I now see the Desktop Couch Scratch folder in my bookmarks, but I simply do not understand how this feature works and what it is supposed to accomplish. Is it similar to Firefox Sync (by Mozilla) in that it synchronizes the bookmarks on multiple computers? Or is it supposed to make the bookmarks accessible to view on the web under the account page (like Evolution contacts)?
When I go to a bookmark, right click, instead of an option to open in a new tab...it directly opens the page. Has anyone else experienced this ? Do you think this is a bug in the new Firefox ? Or is this designed this way ?
I've had a minor, yet potentially embarrassing bug in Firefox 3.0.x for many months in Ubuntu 9.04, and just recently also experienced it with a fresh install of 9.10 with Firefox 3.5.x. Basically what happens is that occasionally a favicon will incorrectly be associated with a bookmark until I visit the bookmarked web site again. And these will be favicons from websites that I do not have bookmarked. Normally I wouldn't care. But if I was surfing porn, sometimes the porn site favicon would show up on one of bookmarks. Which could cause a bit of embarrassment. LOL
It turns out through a bit of sheer luck, I discovered that the problem seemed to be a bug in the "Tab Mix Plus" Firefox add-on. Since I only wanted that add-on for it's last tab selected feature, I un-installed it and installed a much more light weight and simple add-on called "LastTab" to recreate that functionality. And I have yet to have this problem since then. I suppose it's possible that it could be an interaction problem between add-ons. So just for completeness of information, here's a list of all my add-ons prior to un-installing Tab Mix Plus and installing LastTab.
What happens is that I like the djvu format (a lot!), and I'd like to export all my pdf books (I'm studying the university and I have a lot of pdf books) to djvu format. The problem is that I found very uncomfortable to read a djvu book (with hundreds of pages) without the help of bookmarks or index.I have found some djvu files with bookmarks and that's why I believe that there is a way to do this.I found an application called djvubookmarker on sourceforge.net , but this application only works on Windows OS (and doesn't work really good, it has some bugs) so I haven't used wine to use this application with my Ubuntu.
Like the title says my bookmark icons have disappeared and have been replaced with blank white pages:Initially I thought they would come back if i did a fresh install and imported the bookmarks, but when I reinstall chromium they are already there, and again without the proper icons.
I have: ubuntu 10.10 => joined into Active Directory Domain (test.net) I can login using AD users using Likewise-Open I have in my Windows environement Home Folders (Shared by AD) for every user and it apears as Z: Drive automatically when I loged in using windows machines. I need same setup using ubuntu desktop to show these Home Folders for every users automatically when he logs in.
I am puzzled by this really weird issue that involves Mozilla Firefox 3.6.8. When I add a bookmark (doesn't matter where I add it, could be to the field or to the menu) followed by exiting Firefox and then starting again, nothing happens. The process firefox gets listed with 'ps aux | grep fire' but the program itself doesn't appear, as if it hung before it could get to the display. However, when I remove ~/.mozilla (or rename it) Firefox starts up again nicely. I can only assume that the problem has to do with bookmarks (which is really odd..).
I was trying to install Sim City 4 Deluxe when somehow through my mounting an un-mounting of the two ISO's nautilus decided to make an entry in the places menu. I've searched through the forums and most of what I'm finding is how to remove things like the network and desktop items.
Here are three screenshots showing what I mean. Number one shows the entry I am talking about, specifically the SC4DELUXE1 entry. Number two shows that just right clicking and selecting remove like many threads suggest does not work here as it is grayed out. Lastly number three, this is the error I'm given when I left click the entry.
I finally figured out how to fix this. I simply went into the disk utility. Under peripheral devices the unwanted device was listed. Click the check file system button after selecting the device. It reports back that the file system is not clean and removes the device.
I'm running the latest release of Fedora, release 12. When I attempt to bookmark a site, Firefox will close when I click on the drop down arrow to choose the location. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox but the issue persists. I've tried this when running Gnome, Openbox, and xfce.
I am just trying out a new installation of 11.4 (KDE) but have an irritating problem when trying to set up bookmarks using the KRDC Bookmark Editor. Whenever I try to add or amend a bookmark in a folder, I start typing in the name or location box and the text field clears itself and the root of the bookmark folder tree becomes selected, making it impossible to add bookmarks. As I need to add around 200 bookmarks, this is really frustrating.

First off, I have been having disk error problems with Ubuntu, and I think that a file that involves the bookmarks was corrupted. I did remove and reinstall the latest firefox package with Synaptic and apt-get (they do the same thing right?) But I still have this problem: I can not add or modify my bookmarks in the toolbar. I can go to the window to organize my bookmarks but its like nothing is there on the left main view box or the right that shows the bookmarks. If I try to import or restore, it does nothing.
I'm in the process of installing OpenVAS Manager on 10.04, but when I try to start it nothing happens, no message, nothing. That's quite frustrating, to say the least. And I can't seem to find anyting on the matter when googling.
After doing weekly recommended security update a problem occured, next system boot the network manager applet was missing from panel and I had two volume controls in its place. Logging into other user accounts network manager is there and working. How do I fix this? I have not got a clue! I use a usb hawaweii modem, working fine. Just main user account not net work manager. Im running 9.10 and it has not been a problem before.
I may not be a code worrior, yet I have been a Ubuntu convert from Apple for about 3yrs now. Since 1984-2006 now hackers or viruses. And Until now Ubuntu has been clean, well I have been good with repos, etc.
1. Recently I found "Odd" behavior with my Amarok 1.4 player, ffmpeg, winff.
2. During a Synaptic upgrade there were some "unauthorized changes". I have seen this before due to some of my software, so I ignored it. . .
To my bewilderment, "It" erased Amarok 1.4 player, ffmpeg, winff, all image kernels, claimed domain over my system permissions, and external HD. B4 I shutdown, downloaded LUCID 10.4. . . restarted, then copied over all info possible to minimize a complete delete of my system. Upon restart, indeed all kernel images were gone, Only live CD allowed me access to repartition my HD.
NOW. I have Lucid running, and have been denied access to my external HD and partitioned (internal HD). I used Nautilus to copy over files to my internal laptop HD, yet permissions continue to be an issue. The INFECTED FOLDERS are owned by "User 999-user#999. I must micro manage every folder and file to gain "partial permission". The dialog box stutters and never allows me to go down to "Root"
I work in a relatively small organisation of about 30 people (but with a complex network) and we've been looking to move our firewall to Microsoft's Threat Protection Manager on a mostly Windows network. I've been thinking we should have an IDS/IPS inside the firewall and I've been thinking about Snort in NIDS mode but have some basic questions:
1. Can anyone recommend a good web GUI for Snort?
2. Is it advisable to run both on the same machine? (Both from a POV of security and resources.)
I installed Startup Manager but the appearance and security tabs are missing. I really want to be able to change the resolution of the splash screen cause it looks all pixelated and I want to have the splash screen that 9.10 had.
I tried reinstalling and restarting but the issue remains. I know its somewhat functional because I am able to change the seconds that grub takes but when I try to change the resolution of the purple ubuntu startup screen it looks like it tries to change it but it fails.
I have a habbit of openning a 2 sessions of xwindow (I'm using KDE), one as user to browse the internet and the other as root to do some admin work. But someone told me that login to KDE as root is bad in terms of security. Is this true?
