Jun 22, 2010I have a centos 5 system with openldap configured. I need openldap for simple user authentication. ie.. to be able to use it for authenticating it from remote applications and systems like mail clients...etc.
I was able to succefully install and configure openldap and ran a slaptest to verify the slapd.conf file for errors and found none. so now all i want to do is to add username and passwords to the ldap database.
iam just not sure what all objectClasses i need to use for Attributes uid and userPassword and what exactly should be the ldif file syntax for the above entries. I tried various sources but i do either get errors while adding or after adding do get errors trying to access it.
above all, iam able to access the ldap server from my phpldapadmin only as a anonymous user and not as a root user that i added as a first entry.

Oct 26, 2010I no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.

Feb 18, 2010If sound on F12 works as root user but not as a normal user, try this simple fix! I've been struggling to get sound working as a normal (non-root) user since F10. Until now I've had to run X as root user to get any sound out of my machine.
Sound actually works OK now for me as a normal user. Here's how I fixed the problem.
First I uninstalled pulseaudio with:# yum remove pulseaudio Then reboot back to the hardware. You might want to keep pulseaudio, but I have no need for it. PA wasn't running on my system anyway.
Running X as root user, I did the following: As a test I opened a root shell and typed the following:
[root]# alsamixer c0 That started the alsamixer OK, and all the controls were accessible.

Aug 9, 2010When adding a repository via YaST2, how do you add the Alias name? I don't see a text_box for Alias? I noticed in /etc/zypp/repos.d/ that YaST2 uses the Alias, as well as in /var/cache/zypp/. I have very descriptive text in the Name field to make it easier to read in YaST2 Versions Tab, etc. YaST2 appears to make the Alias = Name.Does the user have to use zypper if they want/need a unique/simple Alias name?

Jan 15, 2010I am using mint 8 for a 2 weeks, I am noob to linux but I like Mint than any other linux distro which is great alternative to windows. I have a problem regarding password reseting.
1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?

Jan 22, 2010After an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, my only non-root user on the system can't log in to X. Root can log in just fine. When I type my password into GDM, it attempts to start X but goes right back to GDM without starting X successfully or giving me any error messages. I'm using nvidia graphics drivers and dual monitors, and those work just fine in root's X session. How can I fix it so my non-root user can log in again?

(I have done this before with no such trouble...)
Now I can't log into my root account all I get is a blank screen for a few seconds then I'm back at the log-in screen, the other account works fine.
(This is on my Xubuntu 10.10 laptop BTW...)
