Ubuntu One :: Synchronising Cut-and-Paste Activities
Jan 15, 2011
Just a few days ago, I've decided to organise my files in Ubuntu One, which involves the moving of contents (via cut-and-paste within Ubuntu One). These folders have GBs of stuff in them.
Then I discovered how Ubuntu One does this is to remove them on the server side and upload all the files again in the new location. Obviously, this is undesirable because of the hefty uploading involved.
Firstly, can anyone confirm that this is actually what's happening when we move folders? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, by the way. Secondly, is there a way to cut-and-paste stuff within the Ubuntu One folder without uploading again?
I recently installed 4.7 on my laptop. I really like it. Part of what I like is the activity manager wich I did not see in 4.6. However, I do not seem to be able to delete any activities there.
1) sar -d gives: Requested activities not available I need to enable it, but can't find out how to do it. Can you please help? I am on Red Hat 5.6 sar -u works though as configured by systat in /etc/cron.d
2) Also, I have another system Red Hat 4 where it's working but I searched through all /etc/*cron* and couldn't find anyplace where it's enabled even though sar -d works
I installed 64 bit Fedora 15 today on my desktop pc after briefly trying it a while back on my netbook. Although I'm much more comfortable with its modern look and function than I have been with other Linuxes I've tried since 2008 I'm a bit stumped with a couple of things.
1. I've followed two guides for installing flashplayer and I still don't have flash video in Firefox. Can I safely remove flash-related packages and start again? I use Mobile Broadband with a 3gb/month limit and don't want ot have to reinstall Fedora and the Updates again if I get in a mess.
2. I'm familiar with logging into Nautilus as root - in Ubuntu - to alter the Clearlooks theme a little bit. I take the blue off the scrollbar for example, and add a bit of space round the menu items entries (the blue highlighted area). Although many Fedora 15 programs are using Adwaita, Abiword for example is still using Clearlooks, yet my changes aren't visible - the scrollbar's still blue. What's missing here? I installed beesu and opened /usr/share/themes/Clearlooks...etc using it and I've checked to make sure my alterations are present.
3. Where is a safe site providing libdvdcss2 for Fedora?
4. Is it possible to get the Fedora logo next to Activities in the top right area? I thought I'd seen a custom theme for this and I like the idea of not all Gnome 3 distros being generic and identical.
Is/are there a tutorial(s) for KDE 4 maybe written for OpenSuse? I'd especially like to get a better handle on having different activities on different desktops. I've seen one for PCLinuxOS that refers to something called ZUI and zoom in & out but am having trouble relating.
I got a new laptop, Dell Vostro with AMD A6. This came with Ubuntu 12. Got rid of it!I installed Debian 7.6 from a Live dvd with gnome & update it and no have Debian 7.7. I saw a few videos where Debian 7 comes with a vertical menu bar at the left of the screen and most of the options are available is a nice graphical interface. This is missing in my installation.Below is a link of desktop image i could find. The left activities bar does not show on my system. URL....
Also including diplay details if this could be display drivers related.

Recently made the switch to F15 and GNOME3. The changes are a little jarring, but I'm trying to have some good faith, see how I adjust to things, etc. Any ways, the applications menu (in "fallback" mode) or the 'activities -> applications' menus (in "full" mode) have every application I've ever installed, some times poorly classified. I'd like to edit these, making more minimal menus.
There is, of course, the "alacarte" application. While it runs just fine -- the changes are not reflected in the menus (in either mode). One could manually edit the desktop configuration text files, I assume, but as much work as I need to do -- I was hoping for a GUI application. Does an alternative exist? or a way to interface them?
I am loving kde 4.5 so far... and I started using activities which I am getting to like it. I use cairo dock too. So, is there any way to configure cairo dock to only show applications from one activity? I know I can configure it to show applications from one desktop but id like that from each activity too. Does it make any sense?
I've taken a project to work upon tracing of runtime activities on unix system into a log file. Like, to implement a program which will show the log of everything happened in past, including many requirements, like applications i used (with the time of access), kind of files/directories i opened, closed, created, deleted(with the time), etc.
I am using Ubuntu and new to Fedora.I noticed that Fedora has some hidden items (SELinux management, control center), however on the command line u can always find these items but u have to know the command name.anyone can tell me a short cut to those command names that r hidden and useful for admin activities?
I am using a 17" VGA monitor with 1024x768 resolution. With some tweaking, I'm pretty satisfied with GNOME Shell and its look. The only exception is the font of the text below the icons in Activities. On my monitor with this resolution, the text is just too small. As far as I know, it's the smallest text anywhere in the GUI. This is kind of an accessibility issue for me, since I do have a sight problem
I have just installed fedora 15, I haven't seen fedora since version 7 back in 2007, and I must say, it's very impressive.I can't however figure out how to add a downloaded application, like Intellij-Idea to the activities menu. With the old gnome, you could just create a task bar short cut to any .sh and give it a png icon, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do the same for activities. Searching online doesn't help, since all I seem to find is how to add or remove packages, with the UI, which I would never do to begin with, as I am a command line person. But for some reason, I am quite impressed with this activities menu thing, and I want to use it on the laptop
So, when I program my Java applet I am expected to use an event based model, where I run functions in response to mouse clicks and so forth, and I am supposed to return quickly so that the applet can continue looping. But what if I want certain functions to run by themselves on a regular schedule (like every 200 ms or so) without blocking mouse events, repaints, and so forth?
I looked at the source code of one Java applet I found, and it accomplished this by creating extra threads. I was wondering if creating extra threads was the only way to accomplish that, or if there was some more proper way to do it built into the Applet somehow.
Is there anyway to run KDE without Plasma? At install I opted out of the kdebase-workspace package, but then didn't have the xwmconfig option to run KDE.Duplicating, then commenting out the original, and on the uncommented line: removing everything after 'Exec='. Taking the 'plasma.desktop' out. ...Deleting the entire file will only get it rewritten again by the system..Now it loads into beautiful void.I still have my GUI, complete with any kApps you might want: konsole, konqueror, and even krunner; but no panels or Desktop Activities. Is it still loading plasma only no longer implementing it? Am I losing precious RAM'CPU usage with plasma getting loaded without being used?
how to quickly create Launcher Links that will edit the Applications or Activities panels in Gnome3. I installed Tweak Tool, but it only adds to the desktop which seems a little tacky. I read where you can edit the desktop file to create new ones, but I want to add Application Links to the Application Panel, and then possibly drop and drag to the Activities Sidebar.
I might be overlooking something in Tweak Tool, so will play with that some more, I don't mind editing a file to include, but would rather use GUI.
I don't want to install alacarte to do this. I've copied the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications that I don't want appearing in the gnome 3 applications list (e.g., email settings for evolution), and added 'NoDisplay=true' to the end of each desktop file. Restarted gnome shell, even tried logging out and back in, but they still appear there. Previously, in gnome2, desktop files under the home dir superceded the global directory. Do I need to edit them directly as root to effect the changes, or could this be a selinux problem?
I have installed apf-9.1.7 on linux, after installation inbound activites stopped as per the rules defined.I have added port 20,21 (ftp) in IG_TCP_CPORTS,but still ftp is not working from other Pc.
I need a software to monitor all USB activities over the network from a red hat server with alert notification i have searched a lot and never found a thing
(This is an image what I have to click on, after it I will receive a reward, then I have to wait 12 hours to benefit from it again.) My first idea was that to code it in C++, and I have searched the internet for the appropriate C++ headers, but I did not find any. So as you can see its not a concrete programming question, my main question is that, in what way could I do the above mentioned things.

Iwould like to install Proxy(Apache) server on linux.is it possible?
I would like to trace the user activities by proxy server. we are running many applications on that. How to trace that.is there any server better than Apcache?
I tried to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 on my netbook. I choose the option to upgrade on the Update Manager. All packages had been downloaded, and the installer was busy to replace all the old packages.
During the update I noticed that my internet stopped working, so I disabled my wifi, so it couldn't interupt the upgrade. After a half an hour, I found out my internet worked again, so I pressed the wifi-button again on my laptop, so the wifi would turn on, but after that move my screen hanged, and the upgrade wasn't done yet. I pressed the powerbutton for 5 seconds, because there was nothing else I could do.. Everything just hanged, no mouse movement, no hard disk activities, just a frozen screen.
After this problem I rebooted, and I already knew what I was going to see, Ubuntu couldn't be loaded anymore (and it still can't).
Is there anybody who can help me to restore my laptop? There are really important things for college on the harddisk in the /home/ folder, but I was too stupid to forget to make a backup.. I mostly make backups of everything you can think of, but I thought it won't be neccessary.. damn..
I know that you can restore files using a live-usb (no cd, because it's a netbook), but I choose during the installation the option to 'encrypt' my documents.. So is it still possible to restore my documents, photo's etc. from the home-folder? I really need to get those things back..
When I try to boot all I get on my screen is the text (in Dutch): 'Disk partition / is not ready or is not found - Keep waiting or press S to cancel mounting, or press M to recover manually' The manual recovery doesn't do anything at all, and by the way, booting in the 'recovery mode' won't work either.
I have gone through a tutorial on how to Replace GNOME Shell Activities Text String with Icon.First of al, it did not work for me despite retrying many times. Anyway not a case of sour grapes but I would like something different. How do I achieve the icon to be as in the attached screenshot?
installed Lucid Lynx and am trying to paste fluendo codecs to /usr/lib/gsteamer-0.10 and the paste command, amongst others, is disabled. I think this is down to permissions, ss there any way to override this?
I'm having a really annoying problem with matlab and I've finally resolved to fix it. I just can't paste in matlab at all. I can copy and cut, just not paste.
Anyone know why, my copy & paste in the terminal doesn't work....it's there, just not highlighted, I need to install Sun Java and can copy the command lines from the forum I just can't paste them into the terminal. Also is there a way to check that my Ubuntu download to my USB stick is error free?
