Ubuntu :: No Execute Of Windows Files From NTFS - YOU DUN GOOFED?
Oct 27, 2010
So I have an NTFS volume with many programs I (used to) use on a regular basis. Since upgrading to 10.10, I can't use them. Obviously, an execute bit cannot be added onto files on an NTFS volume. These are Windows programs that ran perfectly with WINE on 10.04. I have tried
Code:
mount -o remount,exec /media/0A08B33E08B32819
It doesn't work. I do not have the luxury of installing PlayOnLinux to do the script workaround. The programs are too large to move to the EXT4 volume I have set up for Linux. I need a work around on this ASAP or I'm ditching Ubuntu for good. From the stupid "let's make the buttons on the left like Mac" (which I have switched back over, but it's still annoying) in Lucid to this glorious fail in Maverick, Debian is looking better and better. Besides, it's not like the packages installed in Ubuntu can't be installed in other distros.

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have
Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)
I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

I accidentally formatted a drive that was ext4 to NTFS in Windows (using quick format only). I tried TestDisk, it does find a deleted partition but doesn't seem to find any files or be able to recover anything. Is there any way I can recover the files?

I have installed Debian as a second OS alongside Win XP, and now I have Win XP on C drive (if viewed from XP), NTFS, my data files (mainly texts and graphics) on D drive (NTSF), and Debian on ext3. Debian sees and opens files on D.
1. If I read-write from-on this D partition from both OSes, is there a chance the data will be corrupted?
2. If I open a Windows-created TXT, GIF, JPG, HTML or other not-proprietary format file from Debian, edit it and save (just SAVE, not SAVE AS) - will this file remain readable from Windows?

I am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.
(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:
Code:
(9) But still I can't see the folders in the Trash
(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.

I had Ubuntu 10 installed for a long time, but rarely used it. Today, i decided to update from ubuntu 10 to 11.04 which took about 2 hours. After the update completed, my computer rebooted fine and i was enjoying ubuntu 11.04 without a problem. I decided that i should probably reset compiz to its default settings since there might be some sort of compatibility issues but once i did, all the task bars and icons glitched out and broke. i restarted again, and now i have no bars or anything. thanksfully i got a keyboard shortcut wallpaper and have been able to use the terminal to do things like open firefox and browse around although im not sure at all what could be wrong.
i used "compiz --replace" i think it was in the terminal, to no avail. aside from that, i have no idea what is even wrong so im having a hard time searching for solutions. im sure this issue is simple and im just retarded, so excuse my ignorance. thank you so much for any help, i've included a screenshot of what im seeing now incase i sound like a loony

Current when my NTFS external drive is auto mounted, I can't run any executables from it.
If I unmount it and then manually do:
sudo mkdir /media/portable
sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/portable
it works fine. Is there a way to make the auto-mount have "full" access so I can run applications from it?

First off let me say that I love working with Ubuntu. It's a great OS to learn Linux on. Now on to my problem. I have a laptop that dual boots. Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Been working just fine. I was using NTFS-Config to auto mount the Win7 partition during startup of Ubuntu. It has been running fine. I am able to move files between the linux partition and the NTFS partition with no problem. Now I've come across a problem. I big problem. Just this week I installed VirtualBox onto Ubuntu. I started creating virtual machines. 6 in all (3 Win 2k3, 1 2k8 and 1 Win7). I was saving the virtual machines to the NTFS drive as this was by far my largest drive. I used a directory titled "virtualbox" under the c:/users/public directory. This setup was working great. Was able to get my vm's patched and up to date. Created several snapshots. Basically I was a happy camper.
Last night I booted into Windows 7. OS started fine. I was just surfing the web. After that I rebooted the system and entered Ubuntu and started Virtualbox. I tried to start a vm and it complained that the virtual harddrive was missing. I checked to make sure that the path was correct for the virtual drive and discovered that the entire virtualbox directory that I created on the NTFS partion was gone!!! Everything else was in place and intact including music and large video files that I had downloaded to the Ubuntu partion and moved the the NTFS partion.
I save these virtual machines???? Should I abandon using NTFS-Config. This is somewhat critical since I had took sometime to create this test lab and to have it disappear from simply booting into Windows 7 is crazy.

I am dual booting XP and Kubuntu 10.10 from separate hard drives and I can't execute .exe files from my XP drive. I also have an internal data drive that I can execute .exe files from fine. When I try to go into the properties for the file to mark it executable I am unable to do so. I have ran "sudo nautilus" to mark the files executable and that doesn't work either. I even changed /dev/sdb1 to be owned by myself instead of root, and that doesn't help. When I used "sudo nautilus" I also got error messages in my terminal when I tried to do anything (which I copied and attached to this post).

Some time ago I installed LAMP in my server, but now I need to execute .php files from the command-line (in order to execute some manteinance scripts for mediawiki). Seems that the PHP files running in the server are run thru some kind of "module" in apache2. Can I tell apache2 to run a .php file in command-line mode using that php module? Or should I install a fresh copy of php-5? Won't that interfere with apache or mangle the system?

I'm wondering if there is any way to execute a program, run some command or anything else when closing the laptop's lid.
My question aims to be generic, both for Windows and Linux. Something useful should be locking the laptop when closing the lid (Win + L in windows), or running expensive processes such as antivirus analysis etc. without doing it manually before closing the lid.
