Ubuntu Networking :: Enabling Wifi In Laptop For Other Devices When Connected To Wired Network

Jul 14, 2010

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

After looking at this post [URL] .... poked around at the back of the monitor and found the DVI cable loose. Plugged it in tight and rebooted and Gnome desktop came up as good as ever.

Step b. , as it turns out, was someone had adjusted the monitor height resulting in the DVI cable coming loose but not getting pulled out entirely.

Software :: View Webcam Connected To Tv Capture Card Over Internet

Mar 2, 2009

We have a webcam that is connected to a tv tuner card via the rca input on the tuner card. I want to set that up so that i can view it remotely over the internet. I've seen you can use vlc to do this, but the problem is that I don't want to have the webcam's computer recording and streaming all the time. I want it to only do that when i want to view it from my remote computer. We don't view the camera at a regular time, so a set schedule wouldn't work.

I hope this all makes sense. Is this possible, and if so, what is recommended for getting this done.I'm hoping i can somehow control this with a remote control and we'd see it on our tv monitor (that'd make it easy for the non-computer people here), so if it could be done in a script that would be great cause i can have the remote run the script.

Ubuntu Networking :: DNS - Local Devices Name Resolution?

May 30, 2010

In my home network, My Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (fully up to date) is having trouble being able to ping other computers by their computer names instead of by their IP#s. I've checked over the settings of the router (D-Link that provides wired and wireless connectivity, DNS, Gateway, etc.) and I'm pretty sure it is set correctly. My Ubuntu system is a dual-boot (Ubuntu and XP), the other computers are all XP except for one which is running Windows 2000 Pro. All the other computers are able to ping each other by name, and can ping this one by name when it's in XP or when it's in Ubuntu.

But this computer (when in Ubuntu) cannot seem to ping the other computers by name. Some it can be pinged by name from the Ubuntu system if I include the .local to the name, but others do not. I have checked and compared the network settings on each of the computers to make sure they were set identically (only the computer name is different). All of the XP systems are DHCP configured, The Win2000 is set static and is also reserved at the router. NONE of them have any of the computers listed in a hosts file. I want to avoid editing hosts files if I can.

There are seven computers in all. Only the Ubuntu has difficulty pinging other computers by name. What should I check? What can I set? I would like to know what it is that I'm missing.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Is Not Connected?

Mar 23, 2010

WiFi on this laptop worked fine for a few months then went out; after a reinstall of ubuntu (since 9.xx had come out since then anyway) the wireless still refused to even see networks, let alone connect to them; under Wireless Networks in the NM, I just see a greyed out 'disconnected'. This got me to thinking that it may have just been a hardware issue, but I find that hard to believe. Anyway, here's the pertinent information:

Started off with an lshw command just to see if a network adapter is even listed as being connected: `lshw`

Code:
id:
network:1
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection[code]....

As an addendum : I found this driver project but they claim to require a 2.6.8+ kernel; a quick `uname -r` shows that mine is 2.6.31, and an `apt-cache search linux-image` reveals that to be the highest available from repos; do Debian/Ubuntu distros not use more recent kernels or is this an Ubuntu-specific kernel naming scheme? If so, to what would it be comparable? I'm hesitant to try to install this and change my firmware if it's likely I'll be borking something.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless, Saying Connected But It Isn't?

Oct 30, 2010

After being a windows *** all my life I've finally taken the decision to start using Linux for real.

Trouble here trouble there I finally came down to a ubuntu netbook edition, the latest one for the moment.

I had to use jockey-gtk to install drivers to my broadcom network card which took a while, but it now says I have a driver!

Trouble is, when I connect to my WLAN at home it says connected to Gustafsson(Network name) but my interface eth1 looks like this:

Other computers can connect to it just fine, and my computer (Toshiba Satellite A505) has connected to every other one I've tried on. Networking :: Getting IP From Plugged In Devices

Jan 3, 2010

I know pretty nothing about networking'n'stuff. I got this linksys wireless router that was somewhere in a box for a few years ... now I want to see whether I can bring it back to life. I know, that I put some different software on it and that it doesn't have it's original ip assigned any more. But I can't remember which ip that would be.

So for starters I just wanted to put the original software back on to see if that thing still works. But how to do that? First I got no clue how to determine the address it is listening to. Once that'd be figured out I guess I'd have to ssh to it and install this ____.bin file I downloaded somehow.

Ubuntu Networking :: Multiple Devices On Single Network

He's had several thoughts on how to get this done and I know very little about this kind of thing so I thought I'd ask some of you.

His first thought was to buy a multi port bridge, but he doesn't like any of the ones he's seen so far.The other thought was to connect all of the devices to a switch and then use a single bridge, but he isn't sure if this would work.
