Ubuntu :: Unable To Choose System Sound - Login Windows

May 21, 2010

I am having a problem with my Lucid L. I installed Mac4Lin and when trying to change login window, grub window, splash screen, or even system sounds, I simply don't have the option.

I go to the application like System-Preferences-Sounds and simply don't have the option to change the system sounds, all I have is 5 tabs without that option.

Login widows is the same thing, I can only choose if I want a login sound or not and that's all, I can't even choose to make auto login since it does not give a user as option.

I tryed also with art manager, but the "Install" button is greyed, and startupmanager does not give me any of those options too.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Networks And Unable To Configure Network

Jul 27, 2010

I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.

Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network

However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.

Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To Secure Networks

Nov 12, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu for quite a long time and I never got around fixing this particular wireless problem. I have tried Network Manager as well as Wicd. I am never able to connect to a secure network (WPA). When I use Network Manager, it just tries for a long time and gives up. As for WiCD, it again tries for a long time and finally says "Bad Password". Of course, the passkey is correct. When I connect to an unsecured network, it goes through just fine. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 which uses a Broadcom 43xx Driver.

Ubuntu Networking :: WUSB600N Unable To Connect Despite Able To See Networks

Jan 3, 2011

I've managed to install my WUSB600N on 10.10 (which was NOT easy!!) and I can see all my local wireless networks, but I can't connect - it attempts to connect then disconnects after what I guess is timing out.I know that you can place these cards in broadcast mode (I think), where you can see networks but not connect. Considering that to get this card working I had to attempt about four different sets of instructions to get this far, could I have placed the card in a broadcast mode? I've been at this for about three days, and unless I go out an buy another network card (I'm currently connected using it through windows) then I'm going to have to give up on Linux, which I really don't want to

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Deal With A Windows/ Networks

May 21, 2011

All the Ubuntu networking info I can find online talks about Samba and how to deal with a Windows/Ubuntu networks.

I have 4 computers for my family, I just installed Ubuntu (10.04 lts on 2, 10.10 & 11.04) on them. They are all dual boot with XP.

Is there a tutorial that talks about just dealing with an Ubuntu network? I would assume you don't use or need Samba if windows isn't involved?

Also it looks to me that the work-group name is more important to windows. Is it even necessary with Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: AR9285 - Unable To Connect To WPA-Enterprise Networks

Aug 25, 2010

I have a Toshiba NB300 netbook that has an Atheros AR9285 wireless chipset and is running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. At my University there is a FreeRadius authenticated wireless network (called "UCC") that I would like to connect to. Using NetworkManager I have created an automatic profile called "Auto UCC" that contains my user details for the connection. When attempting to connect to the network, the NetworkManager icon spins for a couple of minutes and then presents me with the authentication dialog. If I re-enter my details (and disable the CA cert prompt), it repeats the process seemingly infinitely (spin-spin-spin, auth box) Attached is a copy of the syslog from first attempting to connect to stopping the connection attempts. The wireless card's 'lspci' line is

Networking :: Driver - Unable To Detect Any Wireless Networks

Mar 9, 2011

Right so I just bought an Acer TimelineX with a Broadcom BCM43225 BCM43225 802.11b/g/n WiFi card. With this card I am not able to detect any wireless networks and after googling around I found out other people have had similar issues. But my problem is kind of unique in the sense that I'm using Backtrack as my Linux distribution (I'm not a blackhat or anything, more of an enthusiast with no malicious intentions) Also I'm not a God at Linux so if you have any solutions please be verbose! I tried the following: [URL] But the Makefile spits out a syntax error. (Makefile:29: *** missing separator. Stop.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Tether Or Ad-hoc Networks Causes Headaches With Other Networks?

Apr 16, 2011

I am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.

What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.

I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.

SUSE :: Get The Option To Choose Windows Or The Installer At The Windows Boot Screen

Sep 16, 2010

I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.

#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).

My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.

#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Configure Display / Can't Choose 1600x900 On Either One?

Oct 7, 2010

Karmic 9.10 latest updates
Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE
Nvidia driver 185.18.36

Monitor Acer P205H - 1600x900 native

I can't configure the monitor. and the display.

I've tried with both the built in display configure and the Nvidia one. Can't choose 1600x900 on either one.

I either can't see all the display on the monitor, or it takes on some weird panning mode and looks like the display is about 2500x1500 or something.

Here's the xorg.conf file. Clearly it does not see the new monitor and the modes are wrong. These settings are for the previous monitor. How Can I fix this so that my display works properly? Thanks.

Ubuntu :: Choose Windows Vista (Which Is Pointing To Where Xp Is Isntalled)

I have 3 operating systems installed to my computer.

Windows 7 64 Bit
Windows XP 32Bit
Ubuntu 9.04

The problem I am facing is this: I recently installed XP on a drive that up until now had a Vista install on it. My Grub loader used to be the main boot loader for my computer. But when I choose Windows Vista (Which is pointing to where xp is isntalled) I get an error message. When I choose seven I get an error message.

Infact the onlly one that works from the grub menu is ubuntu itself. So to get to Windows XP or Seven I must choose the hardrive in the bios. So how do I get the grub loader to point to the correct place to make it load seven and xp?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Connect To Wireless Networks

May 22, 2011

While staying at a hotel that offered wireless Internet connection connection I was not able to access their network. I went to McDonald's, which had wi-fi connection. Same thing. My laptop was not able to make a connection.

My question is as follow:

How do I find out:

1) whether it is a problem with my new Ubuntu version (10.04)?

2) my wireless card in my laptop is no longer working? Are there any tests that I can run?

Ubuntu Servers :: Name Not Showing Up In Windows Or Networks?

Mar 21, 2011

My server name, salamander, is not showing up in windows networking or in the networking items on linux computers. I have checked, double checked and tried several samba settings to see if I can make it work, but to no avail. Its shares can be accessed by any computer by going directly to 10.10.1.101, salamander's fixed IP.

My workstation, bear, shows up. I edited hosts to read: "10.10.1.101 salamander"
Any machine can access the share on salamander using the ip address, but not even Bear can connect directly with the computer name.

When I go to networks in Salamander, all it views is itself and a windows network. Inside the windows network is only salamander.

Bear shows up in the list of servers, and also has samba running. Eagle and Bearcub are also ubuntu without samba and do not show up in the list either. Understandably so.

Here is my smb.conf:

Code:
[global]
workgroup = WILDLIFE
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)
security = SHARE
