Ubuntu Networking :: Detecting Idle In Pidgin And Other Apps In VNC Sessions?

I run pidgin instant messenger via fbpanel taskbar via fluxbox window manager via xvnc vnc server via xrdp remote desktop terminal via sesman session manager.
One problem I've found is that Pidgin does not detect when I stop mousing or typing. I also run gnotime time tracker and it too is not able to detect when I don't type on the keyboard or move the mouse in my X-Windows.
Some questions:Is there a common problem? Is there a workaround? Is there a way to diagnose the problem?perhaps a program which says which window got the input which resets the idle timeout
Is there a way to examine or record the idle periods?

I'm trying to understand if anyone is left on a server. Basically I manage a simple linux server remotely used by 3-4 individuals. I can never tell if someone is actually on or not using w/who.What I'm seeing is some people having what appears to be inactive/lost VNC sessions. I don't understand idle fully, but I do believe a program (without user interaction) can clear idle back to 0, correct?Anyway, I'm asking because every now and then I need to reboot the server, and I do not want to interrupt any program working on calculations or waiting on having the data saved.

When I run top d 0.5 on my machine and I press 1 to enable the SMP View, I notice that all of the CPUs keep toggling between 100%idle and 0% idle.
The odd part is that when a CPU goes to 0.0% idle, I would expect to see one or more of the other columns peek, but they are not.
What is causing this?

I have a Kubuntu 10.10 install on which I can't update my packages due to some fail conflict between pidgin and pidgin-facebookchat. I can't even remove the stuff via apt-get due to this conflict...

I am using Ubuntu 9.04. After doing sudo apt-get update When I try to insatll pidgin via terminal it shows: XXX@XXX-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install pidgin Reading package lists... if i stop that session, and come back later, it will have me log on at the login screen, but start a new session, with multiple instances of things..now, with vino, i could just keep the same session running, and when i VNC in, it just resumes it.. This one starts a new one.. i even tried just locking the screen, and it still starts a new one...i know there is an easy fix.. lol.. i just cannot find one.. i REALLY like how it shows me the ubuntu login on my server.. that is slick, so id like to keep that, if possible.

I have a mate who runs the IT in his office. He has recently set up and secured the network but now has an issue logging in to the network from home. Here is the message I got from him regarding the set up and what he is having specific issues with.
I was really pleased with the results on my Pen Test; the office itself is a pure MS environment but the testers all use Ubuntu 9.10 to hack with. The main tools of choice are Nessus and Ophcrack with a bit of NMap. It's pretty scary what you can do with just these tools. I had a Wireshark trace running all the time and it's fascinating to watch how these guys crack open a system. The only really major change I've had to implement on my network is to force the use of SSL as a transport layer for our remote desktop sessions. This has forced me to start using MS RDP Client 5.2 because it can use certificates on the session. The problem I've got now is that the Terminal Client in Ubuntu can't do this so I can't remote in from home on my Ubuntu laptop.

I'm having a problem where the wired network wired network (eth0) disconnects when the connection is idle for a while (usually tens of minutes). It works fine every time I boot up, but eventually it dies, and I can't ping the machine, or ping anything from the machine. ifconfig shows that it still has an IP address. Running ifdown/ifup causes it to work again. I intend for this machine to be a server, so I can't afford to go restart it when I need network access. sudo lshw -class network gives me this:

I'm using BSNL 3G USB datacard in India. After connecting to internet, if I leave without browsing, the connection is dying. But if I'm running any downloads in the background, it's staying alive. I'm facing more of this problem when I'm using Ubuntu. And if I'm browsing the download speed received is less than the speed received while downloading using a download manager.

i used to download files using transmission bit torrent client. I download the torrent and once the download starts i will leave the system and check only after 4 or 5 hours later.But when i check the system again, the network connections were automatically disconnected.The download is getting stopped naturally. why my wired network connection is getting disconnected automatically if the system is idle?(ubuntu 10.10)

So I have a usb wireless adapter that I set up on my Xubuntu system, and it has been working great since. The laptop that I have Xubuntu on is kind of a POS, so I wanted to try out LXDE to see how it would fare in terms of resource usage.When logged into an LXDE session, all of the ndiswrapper settings appear to be the same, but there are no networks listed and it doesn't connect.

With Mellanox 10G NICs and the MTUs set from 1600 to 9000 we have tcp sessions hanging. Executing ls during an sftp session just hangs. The same thing happens for an ssh session, if execute ls I might get few item in the directory but then the session hangs. Like wise for FTP. The Fujitsu switch is configured by default to handle jumbo frames. At 1500 MTU everything works fine. We are running the 2.6.25.14 kernel with CentOS 5.2 and the Mellanox driver.

I'm trying to get my friend's laptop(acer travelmate 2200) to connect to his wireless network. I just installed a new hard drive and installed a dual boot windows xp/ Ubuntu 9.04 setup.
His laptop still connects fine with the old hard drive with windows XP installed, so I know the hardware is working.
When I click on the network manager , however, I don't see anything. Normally , I'd just hit the network manager and I'd see the available connections , but on this laptop I'm not detecting any.
The only thing I can think of , is that Ubuntu doesn't have the proper drivers needed for the wireless card in the laptop. But I don't know how to go about checking this since whenever I've done this before it's always just worked automatically.

I have Windows7 installed Oracle Virtual machine. On VirtualMachine i installed BackTrack4. I'm using datacard (India,Reliance ZTE EVDO3.1mbps) for my internet. I'm able to get internet on my backtrack OS via share using NAT. But when i try to use wireshake to trace my data i'm unable to trace the data send from my windows7 OS.

I have a USB modem working in windows. But no luck to connect using Ubuntu 10.04.
I have setup usb-modeswitch and other stuff. The modem is attached to port ttyUSB0. But when i run "sudo wvdialconf" it displays message like this.

I have got pptpd linux server and pptp linux client which connects successfully. Now I want setup idle time (inactive) in pptp linux client so that if the pptp tunnel is inactive say for example 5 minutes it will be automatically disconnected. how can do that, is there any built in feature on pptp client?

Sometimes my network will be gbit, others it wont. Its quite annoying when trying to transfer large files to and from my server. Hardware is Asus K7 series laptop, which works "sometimes". Can't really determine when it wants to choose gbit.
If i mii-tool -r (renegotiate) it doesnt get better, and -f (force) doesnt provide the option for 1000baseT, only 10baseT and 100baseT.

First time ever switching from windows. Mainly doing this cause I though it would be fun to learn a new OS and see how it is.From watching a few videos it looked like all I have to do is click on the wifi logo at the top of the screen and I would get my router and a bunch of others (does this on windows) but when I click on it I dont get anything. I think it might be that im running this on a laptop. My wifi card is: Standard Dell Wireless 1501 802.11 g/nIts a new dell inspiron 5000 laptop i customized a little with more ram and a new video card.
Im guessing I will need to provide more info but as I said at the start Im new to this and not sure how or what info I would need to provide. Please just tell me how I can get any data you need and il get right on it. (I used Wubi to install this, went off without a hitch)

Even thought my Westel Model 7500 has the appropriate green lines (Power, Wireless, DSL, Internet), it always takes my Ubuntu 9.04, Dell Inspiron 1545n considerable effort to connect to the wireless network. Please note that I am using WPA security and MAC filtering.Below is the series of events, spanning about 10 minutes every time I boot up the laptop.1. Tries to connect wirelessly automatically.2. Pop-up appears with SSID and password in dots.3. Tries to connect wirelessly4. Pp-up appears with SSID and password in dots.5. Tries to connect wirelessly6. I installed the new ubuntu 10.04 distro using packagemanager, everything was fine intill i booted up today and there was no access points at all, i tried everything i could think of ( not a lot ),, so i decided to freshly install ubuntu 9.10 and start over, but there is still no scan results, from iwlist or any connections in networkmanager, i checked and the driver was installed and it was showing my card under iwconfig = eth1,

in windows its required hardware supporting software ,i dont know whether it's required for Ubuntu.
i followed instruction on ubuntu forum that is in
network manger->new connection->mobile broadband connection-> modem type (in that box is not enabled so i cant select my device)
->provider country(india) ->choose provider(Aircel)->billing plan(aircel prepaid ->APN is aircelgprs and dialup number is *99***1#)
->finally i did everything and applied but the network manger not showing any mobile broadband connection i am tired

1) realtek RTL 8139 family PCI fast eathernet NIC
2) realtek 8169/8110 family gigabite ethernet NIC ( ONBOARD)

Previously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.

I've got two computers, with one (my current one I'm posting with) acting as a bridge for the other to access the internet (ICS, yay). Under windows there's no problems, everything goes smoothly on boot up. However I got a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 via mail a little while ago and got around to installing it today with the intention of updating it to 10 while I'm sitting here programming. Thus far, I haven't had any luck getting the networking to happen. As far as I can tell,
Here's what's going on:
Ubuntu sees the USB dongle Lights are flashing on it, it's got power and being interacted with Ubuntu's Wireless Network dock icon has entries for two nearby WiFi networks (my own with password, and someone else next door, also passworded so I can't try theirs) Ubuntu asks for a key to use with logging in After 20-30 seconds of trying it asks again for a key to log in.

Sudo iwlist scanning correctly identifies two access points, however it can't seem to identify what the encryption type is on my computer.
I'm using WEP encryption for my Wii to be able to get online, and the password is set correctly (yay for show key). Looking at this computer's activity monitor I can see the mac address of the USB key.
Disabling password protection on my computer gets Ubuntu to recognize that there is indeed an unlocked network available now, however it fails to connect, once again.
Am I better off just ordering a copy of Ubuntu 10 on CD? Besides sneaker net with a 1 gig tumb drive there's not much I can do to get drivers over.

I have a 64 bit install of Ubuntu 10.04, I was surfing up to 11:30pm EST last night, shut down for the night, upon reboot am unable to connect to the internet or my local network. Ubuntu seems to think that I have no ethernet cables connected.My networking is controlled by my motherboard (Gigabyte P55A-UD4P) and the problem is not on my cable modems side. The modem has multiple wired jacks, all of them are unresponsive with my Ubuntu PC while my roommate can connect to all of them with his Windows 7 PC. Both network cables (the one connecting to his box and the one connecting to mine) are interchangeable: They both work on his and neither on mine, so there is no broken cable.I've followed the troubleshooting in other posts, here are some commonly requested diagnostics:
