Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom STA: Is 802.11n The Default?

Feb 17, 2010

How can I make sure that of the g and n frequencies that my router is broadcasting, wicd is connecting to the n? My bcm4322 chip supports n, and can connect to an n-only network. A speed test may prove one over th other, depending on the overall speed, but is there a more exact way of knowing?

General :: Looking For Distro With Broadcom As Default?

Jun 22, 2011

I currently have ubuntu on my dell inspiron 17 which I installed myself last year with no IT or linux experience and spent 4 days sorting out the wireless with the help from some very patient people on here. A stupid 'friend' formatted my laptop and now I am without wireless again. I found the old thread that helped me set up the wireless last time but I just can't follow it. I believe it was bcmwl-kernal-source driver I needed. There was some mention on the thread of other distros having the broadcom driver I needed as default, does anyone know which ones?

Debian :: Default Ip Address For Broadcom Wireless Not Modifiable

Jan 7, 2010

OS is Debian Lenny. Hardware inspiron 5100. Wireless mini-pci is broadcom 1600.Anywho,did a netinstall and all works well except I can't get the default ip that comes up with the cool wireless strength meter to change. I've tried (almost ) everything. The network gui lets me modify all the values, but is useless. I can get the wireless to work by going in and modifying the interfaces file and getting rid of the avahi-daemon function that discovers the addresses.

So, if I reboot with the re-written addresses in the interface file, and then 'iwconfig wlan0 essid' to my netgear it works. But, no pretty signal strength and I have to manually assign the netgear portion with iwconfig. While installing 'etch' on a desktop I noticed belatedly that if I had no cable connected the install asked me for ip, gateway, etc. Which bring about the questions. Is there a way to change the default values that come up with the automatically assigned ip.Will the netinstall give me a chance to input a manual ip and will it then plow under all the currently installed 'stuff' on the drive. The system runs well except for this.Failing that, is there a step I can take early in the netinstall to modify the data.Or, failing that, is there a way to modify the default if I instead make a disk 1 of lenny and run it?

Networking :: M-a A-i Broadcom-sta ?

Mar 28, 2011

The OS is Debian-Sid, the kernel is 2.6.38.

Code:

According to the debian wiki i got two choices:

Either:
firmware-brcm80211
Or:
m-a a-i broadcom-sta

Firmware-brcm80211 is very unstable (the connection goes down all the time), so i tried broadcom-sta.

I got this error-message:

Code:

I ran "make menuconfig and searched for "WIRELESS_EXT", but i can't find it (it is mentioned in concuntion with "GELIC", but no where to be found -> Device -> Network -> Ethernet 1000 -> PS3, no PS3 to be found).

I installed a default debian repo kernel, and "m-a a-i broadcom-sta" worked fine.

Code:

So, to make it short:

Where exactly can i set "WIRELESS_EXT" ?

On another note: why is my card said to be eth1, and not wlan0? Is that correct?

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter?

Jan 3, 2010

Basically a few weeks ago I decided to try Linux, in particular Ubuntu. I have it installed in my Windows 7 partition but now I am willing to take the full plunge and switch to it all the way. The only issue is I cannot connect to wireless internet. It states "device not ready". Wireless is turned on on my laptop, I am very near the source, have tried making a manual connection with the network setup. I tried the hardware tester and it found my ethernet and wireless hardware (Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter).
I went to the package thing and looked for Broadcam. I found a package but it was already installed. I tried it manually with:

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-modaliases
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I then heard to try "sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter" and did but it couldnt find it.As stated before I am new to linux so I'm probably missing something easy I just beg your patiance as I learn this new operating system.

Ubuntu Networking :: Neither Broadcom B43 Nor STA Driver Is Working?

Jan 23, 2010

I just deleted my windows XP and installed Ubuntu 9.10 earlier this morning. I used wired connection to get drivers for my wireless network card.

When I did lspci, the very last line states:

Network Controller: Broadcom Coporation BCM4311 902.11b/g WLAN(rev 01)

I used the System -> Administration -> Hardware Driver and found 2 drivers. I have tried them both to connect to my D-Link Router. Neither of which worked.

For Broadcom B43 Driver, the wireless is able to detect wireless networks. However, it fails to establish connection.

For Broadcom STA Driver, the wireless cannot even detect wireless networks available.

What is the issue here and how do I resolve it so that I am able to connect onto the internet wirelessly?

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless With Broadcom 4312 ?

Mar 6, 2010

After some serious trouble with Plasma, I decided to re-install 9.10. When booting up, I noticed that the wireless indicator light stayed on orange which usually means that the driver is not loaded.

I have a Broadcom 4312 in a HP Pavilion dv6. I checked the repository but no driver shows up. I seem to remember that it used to be there. Or am I mistaken and do I need to install the vendor driver from the Broadcom site?

I've added the output of lspci and dmesg | gre b43

Ubuntu Networking :: No AP In NetworkManager With Broadcom BCM4306 (B43)?

Apr 24, 2010

I have problems with my Broadcom BCM4306 (rev 03) on my HP nx6110ng Karmic.NetworkManager does not list any AP, even if there should be some. It did work for some days without problems, but suddenly stopped working. I made a kernel update with the update manager, but I am not sure if this caused the probem (I also used the wired connection, so I don't exaclty know when wireless stopped working). Reinstalling fwcutter wasn't successful. So I tried as suggested in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...oadcom_BCM4306 and added the following lines to /etc/rc.local

modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Broadcom Wireless Never Works

Apr 30, 2010

I've got a Dell Inspiron mini 10 that has the Broadcom 4322 wireless chipset in it. I have NEVER got this thing to work satisfactorily despite the numerous tutorials online about getting this damned card to work. I thought everything would finally be fixed with 10.04 but no luck at all. I've tried the b43 diver (which isn't supposed to support the 4322) with no luck.

I also tried the restricted STA driver, which seems like it will work as it identifies networks and even connects to them! However, the speed is excruciatingly slow and connections drop like flies. This netbook is actually a friends that I convinced to let me put Ubuntu on and have them try it out, but they are most surely not going to be impressed if the wireless never works.

2. I tried getting the Linux driver off the website [URL]... and followed the instructions in the readme to the letter, yet when i am asked to type in one of the final commands: # sudo insmod wl.ko

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless - Hp Dv6000 Broadcom?

Jan 11, 2011

with some troubles, i finally installed the broadcom wireless driver. it says it's installed and activated, the blue light on the laptop is on saying the wireless is activated, but for the life of me i can't figure out how to make it connect. the only network connection icon i have is the wired one. it's not showing the wireless, or available wireless signals or whatever.

this is my first time using wireless with linux (thought i've been using linux for about 4 years now), so maybe there's some stupid little box somewhere i didn't check or something. any ideas?

the laptop is an HP Pavilion dv9000, the distro is Ubuntu Studio 10.4, and the wireless card is a broadcom, and is installed/active according to the hardware drivers window. i've seen some posters having a problem in 10.10 with everything appearing to work, but just... doesn't. haven't seen a solution for that particular problem though

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Wireless Don't Broadcast In 11.04?

May 2, 2011

I have a Dell Vostro 1400 with a BCM4311 Broadcom wireless card that I just reinstalled with 11.04 from 10.04. I have the drives installed and it seams to be working when i run the 'Additional Drives', but I can't get the wireless adapter broadcasting. I followed the instructions given in the knowledge base on installing Broadcom Wireless, to see if I could get it running and that is where I saw the difference between the example and my computer when writing the 'sudo lshw -C network' command. In the example it said it was broadcasting under configuration (just like my wired networks below) and in mine it does not (see below for copy past).

I can't find a tickbox in the systemtray to enable the wirless networking that I had before the update to 11.04 (the 'Enable Networking' tickbox is still there and the wired network works fine - that is how I got online to do this post). I have the hardware switch turned on and I have been in the BIOS and made sure that the Wireless is enabled.Anyone who knows what could be wrong? Where could I go from here?Quote:

Ubuntu Networking :: Rfkill Does Nothing Under Broadcom STA Driver?

May 3, 2011

I've been seeing a lot of people checking for hardware and software blocks using the rfkill command. I can't seem to get it to do anything at all on my Broadcom "4321AG"/"4328" wireless using the Broadcom STA driver. Of course, I have an old-fashioned hardware switch on the front of my laptop.

Here is some information on my working wireless setup (that rfkill can't seem to see):

Quote:

lspci | grep work
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03)
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n

[Code]....

When I try rfkill list all, it does nothing, just returns me to my BASH prompt. The wifi, wlan, bluetooth, and wwan identifiers also seem to do nothing with rfkill list. It looks to me like it "hooked" IRQ19 in the BIOS, and the wireless does work quite stably (although it does need several seconds to auto-reestablish wireless when Linux goes to "sleep," say overnight).

This page doesn't really tell me much more than rfkill did with no parameters:

[URL]

Is this just because I have an electromechanical wireless switch, or is it a 64-bit problem, or...

EDIT: Oh yes, sudo rfkill list all also just returns me to my BASH prompt without any whistles or bells (after entering a password)...

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom 4318 Will Not Connect To Router

Feb 28, 2010

Ok, so spec's on my setup: Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron 530.. Q6600 w/3GB RAM, 500 GB HD w/radion 2600xt and broadcom wlan NIC. My issue is that the broadcom will not connect to my router. I did some searching, found a link from this site detailing how to get my NIC to work on Intrepid, but that's not what I have. I followed that guide anyway, substituting my driver for his (guide is on sampbar.com) and nothing. It's showing now as not ready. I've installed ndiswrapper and grabbed the drivers for my NIC from my Vista install, but when I use ndiswrapper to do that, I get an error saying it can't tell if the hardware is present, then shows me it is present and it still won't connect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Wireless Doesn't Work

May 20, 2010

I'm working on Lucid, in HP Pavilion 9730us laptop.

My wireless broadcom card was working just fine until now as i installed it with the Hardware Devices manager, Today i put a new ALFA AWUS036H usb card to work with aircrack. both cards were working together for a while, but as i started playing around with aircrack the broadcom card of the HP has stopped working.

I made a mistake and followed the aircrack tutorial for R8187 / ieee80211 stacks driver, while i'm using RTL 8187 / mac80211 stack drivers, and blacklisted the RTL8187 , rebooted and then both card didn't work. I un-blacklisted it, and the ALFA is working but the broadcom not!

iwconfig shows me only one wireless card on wlan0 the blue light showing activity in the HP card doesn't go on.

Tried to uninstall and reinstall broadcom drivers, still no change.
