Ubuntu Networking :: Public Files/network Sharing Not Working?

So I want to put some of my folders on my network. I open up nautilus and go to my home folder and right click -> properties-> share and then selected share this folder, made it so that others could modify stuff on it and have guest access (which is what I want), and changed the share name to "home". Then I clicked create share. I then went to Places->Network->******'s public files on [the name of my computer]. But then some stupid error message popped up saying:
"DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"

I am using ubuntu 10.04 .I tried to share my files on windows network using samba , I changed theworkgroup name in samba configuration file ..but it dint work for me will you please tell me the exact procedure to share the files on windows network ..

I am an old Ubuntu user and have just strted running F11 on my iBook. I always run system-config-samba on all my machines including my server and even on my work server which shares with windows, Linux and OSX and have found it to be perfect. I installed it straight away on the new Fedora system but It doesn't seem to be functioning the way i expected it to.
I installed system-config-samba and then set up one share folder "Public" with open read write privileges and then turned off the Fedora Firewall all together. But "public" did not become open until I entered the user password for the fedora machine. But, then I could see all folders on the Fedora machine. Even root on the fedora machine became write-able on the network. This was not the desired effect at all. I am assuming fedora is using a non system-config-samba file share system that I am unfamiliar with. what is it? and how does it work?

Today I was creating an Ad Hoc network for sharing internet connection and I realized it is not working. I have done it before on Ubuntu 10.10, now on 11.04 it just doesn't work. I create a new connection (Create New Wireless Network) and it is never visible to the other computers (I checked the IPv4 settings, it was Shared to Other Computers). I really do not know what is going on, my wireless card is working perfectly fine (I can connect to other network and on additional driver it is there with a green circle).

I read some tutorials and installed samba and everything they said so that I could share files between the two computers in my home connected by wireless. After installing samba I opened it from System>Administration. Then I selected add a samba share. On the basic tab I specified the folder I wanted to share. Gave it a share name and description. Then I checked both writable and visible. In the access tab I selected allow access to everyone. After doing that the other computer can see the shared folder but cant copy it and can't even see anything inside it. While trying to copy it says "You do not have previlages to copy" or something like that.

I have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)

I now have BackupPC up and running on ubuntu 9.10.I have a couple more issues. These relate to the fact that I am trying to use backuppc to backup files, but also to provide a central up to date store of network accessible files, so, for example, media files can be viewed over the network, rather than downloaded through the web interface. Thus I have the following problems:
1. Access the files through the network.I want to have /var/lib/backuppc as a browsable folder through the network. I have managed to change permissions on the folders so they are browseable, but i need to set the file permissions so i can open the files. How do I do this, and set it so that all future backup files are given accessible permissions?
2. A single store of files.I want one folder with all the incremental backups being copied into it, so to see the most up to date version of a file, I just browse to it in nautilus, or through shared folders from another pc on the network.At the moment, I have a 0 and a 1 folder, and I am sure I will end up with loads more. I just want a single folder, no matter how many times the backup is made.
3. Change the Naming Convention.Also is there a way to change the naming convention so the folders are given the normal names (so Documents rather than fDocuments)?

I'm trying to get OpenSSH public key authentication to work. My server runs ubuntu. My client is a windows machine, and I'm using cygwin. I tried using the instructions here: [URL]... If I test it out using this line: ssh -v -v -v -o PreferredAuthentications=publickey server.example.org
I get this:

I have installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on my PC. Want to share my files with Win7 system. So far so good, I can access my files on Linux computer from my Windows PC. My problem starts when I want full access to my files, as you see on image it says directory is Public and Writable but still I can't delete or add files to that directory what did I missed ?

Using my laptop, I'm trying to get onto the local library's wireless network, with zero results so far.Basically, I can see the network, but when NetworkManager tries to connect it just spins for a few minutes and then rejects the connection. (Or the connection is rejected by the router) My wireless connection works fine when connecting to my WPA home network.

I've been trying to share a folder with samba. This folder is the decrypted version of an encfs encrypted folder. Mounting the decrypted folder on the server is done automatically on login using gnome-encfs. Exposing the folder locally works like a charm. Now where I get stuck is trying to access the samba share from a client (even with smbclient on the server itself). I can see the share with smbclient -L:

We have to connect one PC in private network (campus) with other PC (mostly a modem in our case)in public network. Connection should be peer to peer like and we have to use C coding for establishing connection between this two systems. Is it possible if we use port forwarding or is there any other way?

There seems to be a lot written about virtual networking but I am not sure what approach to take in my situation. My local subnet has a public block of 128 addresses. I have a virtual host running on my machine. My machine has a static address and I'd need to assign one to the guest. I have edited the guest's interface file and assigned a public address to it's eth0. However the guest cannot ping out and I can't ping in.
By default the virtual machine manager creates a virtual network (virbr0) and assigned a private address range to it. I have tried to create a new virtual network using a subnet of my public range (/31) but the manager says the range must to a minimum of 16 addresses (/4). It doesn't look possible to achieve my aims using the virtual machine manager.
In the past I have used the procedure laid out here:[URL].. which is to manually create a bridge. I am not sure that is relevant for my 9.10. I think I would have to disable the network manager if I were to do that and I am not sure how to do that.

I will try to explain a bit first about my network typology: I have one cent os 5.5 machine with 2 nics - external one 86.x.x.122 and internal one with 2 IPs: 192.168.1.1 and 89.x.x.121. The ideea is that I have a public subnet (86.x.x.120/29) of IPs which are routable only through 86.x.x.122 so I have a webserver hosted on a different machine with the IP of 89.x.x.122 and GW 89.x.x.121 - everything works perfectly fine, except that I cannot access from the internal network 192.168.1.0 / 24 the so called DMZ (roughly) - the 89.x.x.122.
What really makes me crazy is that I setup the IPtables rules correctly because I can access the webserver from the outside world but I cannot accessit from the internal network...
what I'm missing - why the 192.168.1.0/24 cannot see the 89.x.x.122 machine... What IPtables rules should I add?

I've searched the forums (250 thread limit) for a fix on this, but all the questions seem unanswered or unrelated. My situation is this: I'm running Ubuntu x64 10.10 'Maverick'. I have a cablemodem connection for my Internet access. I have home network running on DD-WRT with the dreadful Linksys WRT54G series router.
My DD-WRT router is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0.
My Linux box is 192.168.1.61, subnet 255.255.255.0.
I have a VyprVPN connection set up successfully on Linux. Mostly everything works great, speed's fine, latency is what I expect it to be. Except... I also run an SSH server to remotely admin the box at port 22, an Apache server running over SSL at port 7001, and a Transmission web client at port 7002 (only secured by basic HTTP realms auth). All of these things worked before I got the VPN working, I'm of course using NAT at the DD-WRT router.
The endresult I am looking for, is to have the security and protection of the VPN (even if it's only perceived) for everything I do on this machine -- EXCEPT on Apache, the Transmission web panel, and the SSH server, which I want to access from the outside world. I have no firewalls running or configured, not even iptables, not even the SPI firewall on DD-WRT. All connections to the aforementioned services from the outside world timeout coming in to the Linux box. They all work from inside my home network (182.168.1.0/24). i would like to set up file sharing from one ubuntu pc to another wireless laptop.I found samba on the internet i installed it and i can share files but it's slow a 700mb avi file was going to take 2 hours and from what i read samba is for sharing files from linux to windows.I also found ssh that to is slow also i think it goes over the internet or something like that.So is there any other way to share files that's faster or have i forgot something.I only have 2 ubuntu 10.04 computers and 1 open solaris but the open solaris i will not be putting on the network.

I thought I would try and be clever but have become stuck! I have bought a NEtgear ReadyNAS with a view of copying all sound files and photos to one place. I have a wired home network and a Windows XP PC which I have mapped the NAS to as a network drive.Then came the Linux bit. I have a laptop which I want to do the same with. I have set up the NAS so that it operates with both CIFS and NFS file systems. I can see the CIFS file system in the Network part of Ubuntu 9.10 but am having trouble in getting programs to see it. Ideally I want to use F Spot or Picasa to view the photos and then also use one of the audio packages to play music around the house. When I ask F Spot or Picasa to search for files or folders, the network does not show up in the list.

I have set up a fileserver using ubuntu before, but never on 10.10. i have installed samba set the folder to share, can see the folder on windows 7 but when i try and view it says.

I am having problems trying to share a printer on my desktop. The printer is an HP Laserjet 1020, and the desktop is running 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic. None of the other boxes on the network (wired/wireless, 32-bit/64-bit, Ubuntu Lucid/Win7/XP) can access the printer.
I have checked all of the appropriate boxes in printer properties and server settings. When I try to install the printer on the other systems, I am asked for a username and password on the desktop. I set up a user named "printer" and gave it a password, but when I try to use that username/password to install the printer on one of the other systems, I get an "access denied" error. All of the networked systems can see each other, and access shared files.

I have a desktop and laptop both running ubuntu 10.04. I have them going through a wireless router, the desktop is wired of coarse. I installed just about all the samba packages in synaptic that have the little ubuntu symbol next to them on both desktop and laptop except the Kde and document packages. I installed the two necessary packages to enable personal file sharing to work. But I can't seem to access files back and forth from these computers.

I am at a total loss. For all intents and purposes - sharing files over a lan without a password between this ubuntu 10.04 machine and my wifes laptop (windows 7) should be trouble free. I've installed samba, and created an smb.conf file in /etc/samba

trying to share a few folders with Windows PCs. Usually I just right click and choose "Sharing Options" from nautilus and choose to share it. This isn't there in gnome 3 via gnome3 ppa for Ubuntu. I've tried installing and adding the folders I wanted using samba configuration tool and gadmin-samba tools. I've also installed just about anything that could potentially have anything to do with file sharing from synaptic including:
samba, nautilus-share, smbclient, windbind
and whole lot of other stuff in hope that I had just been missing stuff. I also booted my laptop which is running 11.04 with Unity and I right clicked and selected "Sharing Options" like the usual way and shared a folder and then installed gadmin-samba and the samba configuration tools and the folder I shared wasn't included there. Meaning it isn't using the same thing? Also the only thing installed when shareing a folder is samba and some libpam-something. Two files! Then shares perfectly! Why is it so difficult to set up a simple share with Gnome 3? No matter what I do I boot into Windows on my laptop and try to connect to my network share the same way I always have and it doesn't work.
