Is there any one know how to deploy a remote OS installation for a host with public network address? In a LAN with private network, we can use PXE, kickstart... but what we could do with the hosts have only public ip address?

Qemu : 0.11.1
Qemu manager: 7.0
from Qemu manager, if network card is using User Networking, it's a NAT and I can see that Guest Ubuntu has an ip address 10.0.2.15 and is able to access the internet. However, as Guest ubuntu is running server so I want to do use Tap networking and I assue with Tap, the Guest ubuntu will get an ip address which is in the same subnet as host machine by dhcp. so from Qemu Manager 7.0, I changed Network card to be:
NE2000PCI
Vlan Number =0
VLAN Type: Tap Networking
Mac address: tap0's mac address from host
TAP Network Adpator: Tap0
Note that tap0 was created by openvpn. and then fired Ubuntu guest, ifconfig shows no ip address on eth0 (which has the same mac address as Tap0) so the guest Ubuntu has no ip address and can't access public.
Currently my OS is Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Desktop OS and my web server is Apache2. I have a public address 60.x.y.z and my pc local address is 10.x.y.z. I have a web app in my Apache2 which currently run in localhost(10.x.y.z).
I would like to enable the web app so that it could be browse from outside. I know there maybe some port forwarding process and some commands involved in order to do that. But I have no idea on the steps to do that.
Some FreeNX start-up troubles here, need a hand. 1) I am trying to establish a connection from my workplace PC on my workplaces's LAN to my home PC on my private LAN (LAN-to-LAN). Just typing in the public IP of the target LAN in the "Host" field gets me nowhere, as it fails to connect due to a denial at port 22 SSH - even though I've done the forwarding in my home router and punched the required hole in the local firewall of the target machine.

If I have a dnsmasq server and it dished out a IP address that I don't want it to and it still gives it to my machine no matter how many times I restart windows and issue ipconfig /renew|release or enable/disable the adapter, how do I force it to give my windows machine an IP I want it to have?
The only way I've accomplished this in the past is by rebooting my slackware system.
I'm trying to write a p2p file sharing program using python's built-in libraries. Everything is going well. The only thing is that i'd like to be able to use openssl public and private keys so only a host with the public key could access/decrypt the filesharing. I've gotten these libraries (httplib, basehttpserver, ssl, os) to work using just a pem file containing both the public and private keys but no success with them seperately. Can someone point me in the right direction or offer an alternative? PS, the goal of the project is to create an anonymous, decentralized, secure file sharing program. The reason that i am asking this is because i want to register a .com and i would like to have that point back to my linux box, i have looked at a few services and it seems that godaddy.com will do this and they seem to be the best choice. Verizon fios like most isp's uses a dhcp connection meaning that the public ip address i get will change 1-2 a year. What i don't know is how can i setup my network at home preferably with iptables to have that public ip routed back to my linux box at home? I am using fedora 15 for those that are wondering...
Also when i enabled port forwarding and started my web server and tried loading http://mypublicipaddress in firefox i am directed to a verizon page with a login and password prompt.
I am aware that i will need to get certain information from my isp to have their public ip address routed back to my linux box but i am unware of what to ask them...?

Is it possible to provide remote Windows users access to a LAN via the Internet when the LAN itself is connected to the Internet via a SOHO router that is assigned an IP address dynamically? An LQ thread from 2004 includes a suggestion to use VPN and DynDNS.com. Is that still a good solution? Are there any security issues?
Assuming:VPN is a good choice. DynDNS.com or similar can be used to give remote clients the public IP address of the SOHO router. the SOHO router is configured to forward VPN traffic to a Linux system acting as the VPN gateway. then, for a LAN of ~20 IP nodes and less than 5 simultaneous remote clients, are there any other VPN server software solutions to consider other than OpenVPN, Openswan and strongswan?

I am setting up a server, with a static IP address. I thought I did the setup correctly, including setting up the static IP address. When the system restarted, I saw a message flash about some other host already uses address 72.86.26.xxx
Then, once logged in, I got a system message: System is not receiving updates, check network connection.
I went to System: Network Configuration, and under Devices, I saw:
Inactive Device: eth0
I clicked on activate, and I received the same message: some other host already uses address 72.86.26.xxx
The file /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0 reads:

The internal network is behind nat done by the PC Router.The TP Link is recieving wireless signal from outdoors and it has switching and basic routing capabilities. I'm using the PC router for better routing options.PC Router (or R for short) is a triple-booting machine - Linux, FreeBSD and Windows. It has two lan cards - external (ext_if) - 100Mbps Realtek 8139 and internal (int_if) - 1Gbps integrated Realtek 8169.The problem is that all traffic from R to the network is slow - about 5-20K, while the traffic in the oppoiste direction is all right - about 10MB that is fine for 100Mbps cables, NICs and switches. The problem persist no matter the OS the pc R is running.I've tried some debugging on the situation as follows:
- put another PC at the place of R - everything is fine. That exclude the possibility of damaged cables, RJ-45s, switches and etc.
- connected both of the NICs to the Internet while the internal network is being disconnected and they both work fine (no delays)
- traffic shaping is not running
- there is nothing in firewalls except NATing the internal network (and it is working fine). Actually these firewall rules have been operational for more than months and everything was fine untill a week or two ago.
- changed the internal NIC with another
- connected the internal network directly to the TP and all of the PCs are getting good network performance. Then connected the R machine to the TP as well and there was good performance between the internal network PCs and R.
- R has good performance to the TP. In fact everything has good performance directly to the TP (when not connecting trough R).
- the problem persist only between R and machines from the internal network.

View 7 Replies View RelatedVersion 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.

I have a laptop runing Fedora 13 and a desktop I use for backups, etc. My laptop is named copernicus. Desktop is named galileo. If ping either hostname from itself I get back the localhost IP address. If I ping the fully resolved hostname it tells me unknown host. The desktop is exporting an NFS share I use for backing up work data. I need the laptop to be able to resolve host names to mount the share since we use DHCP. The desktop is dual boot and if it is booted into windows my laptop can resolve the hostname properly. What do I need to do in Fedora to get it to register a hostname with the DNS and/or DHCP server? Should the domain and the search path below both say the same thing?
Here is resolv.conf on the laptop (I am at home). The desktop looks the same, except for a different nameserver. Both computers can resolve other hostnames, just not each other.
We have Verizon as our ISP with a dynamic IP address. We published our website but the IP changes frequently. How can we set Network address translator(NAT) so our website can be published regardless of IP changes? We don't have domain name and have no intention for one.

I have a box (boell) running Fedora 10 sitting behind a firewall at school. I am able to freely ssh to and from this box to other computers (minion) within that lan. Outside of this network I cannot directly ssh to boell - I must ssh first to minion, then I can ssh to boell. I've spoken with the sysadmin and he's verified that the firewall permits ssh freely - i haven't had any issues like this with other boxes of mine there, so this isn't any surprise.
I have verified that the hosts.deny file is blank, iptables permits ports 22 (and 80) and I didn't see anything obvious in the sshd_config. I tried a tcp dump on the external host and boell while attempting to ssh from the former to boell. The packets appear to be acknowledged by boell, but this fails to lead to a connection. I've tried this process with external hosts in different locations with the same result. I have made few modifications to the default installation for F10, so perhaps there is some default somewhere I have to change. In any case, below I have attached excerpts of germane files.

i have a udp server running at port 60178. when i connect to it from localhost there is no problem. when i use the client from a remote host i am not able to connect. I changed my server firewall settings[Fedora 11] and added "udp 60178" to trusted ports but still nothing happened. I ran wireshark and observed that packets are coming to the server machine but server returns a "Port Unreachable" ICMP message and doesnt give the packet to the application.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA brief description of my network:It is a small home network consisting of an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server edition, an Iomega ix2 NAS, a WinXP pro server and several family laptops.This is all routed through a Netgear WNDR3300 home router. All are assigned IP's via DHCP and all but the laptops are static (via DHCP though). The WAN address/DNS is assigned via DHCP from my ISP.The problem:When one of the machines is offline, Ubuntu does not resolve the netbios name correctly. No surprise here. But what is happening is that it is finding some arbitrary machine on another network. Below is what a ping to an offline host reveals:

I'm trying to troubleshoot some strange networking problems. The pattern seems to be that only newer distributions are affected. CentOS 5.4 and Ubuntu 8.04 work fine out-of-the-box. But Arch, Sidux, AntiX, Fedora, etc. show the same pattern of errors.Certain websites cannot be found unless I disable ipv6 in Firefox. And certain addresses cannot be resolved using various terminal commands (wget, apt-get, yum, etc.). What I would ideally like is a permanent solution, perhaps changing some settings on my router, so that I don't have to deal with this each time I test-drive a new distro. I have a hunch the issue has something to do with my DSL provider (Fairpoint) filing for bankruptcy.
One more piece of information that may or may not be relevant: I recently switched a website from one hosting company to another. I noticed there was a delay of several days where I saw the old version at the old host, but viewing the site at a friend's house or the coffee shop showed the new site on the new host. This leads me to suspect DNS issues perhaps, but this is not an area of expertise.
I'm having an issue configuring eth0. I'm using ubuntu 8.10 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox). The correct adapter is being used and it has worked in the past. I've tried placing eth0 in dhcp through the GUI and bash, but always get a 169 address or 127.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to be able to use an rsync command in script that will be run by cron. And it needs to be able to pass a password to rsync so that the remote server it's connecting to will authenticate.
I cannot set up ssh keys between the two servers, it's not an option. I cannot use any other language other than bash, it's my only option. I know this is highly insecure, I have no other option.
So far I have this:
rsync --rsh="/usr/bin/ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o PreferredAuthentications=password" -raxv /source/dir/* user@remotehost:/target/directory/.
This allows the script to ignore host verification and goes directly to the password prompt. I need the script to fill in this password prompt with the password that is stored in a variable.
I tried using expect, but I honestly don't know the syntax, it just keeps failing. A lot of the examples I'm finding online for expect starts off with a "spawn", which i don't have installed, and not sure if I have the ability to install it yet.
