Ubuntu Networking :: Not Able To Authenticate To Home Wifi / Resolve This?

Sep 1, 2011

I acquired an old Compaq Evo laptop and installed Kubuntu on it. Bought a second hand wifi card, a DEXLAN IEEE802.11b (Having Googled to check it would work with Linux).

It detects wireless networks fine, and is able to connect to open ones, but I can't log into the home network with the password which works fine for Windows laptops.

I've tried every configuration of the router I can find, and followed the advice at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...untu#EasySteps but with no luck. It just asks for the password over and over again without connecting.

Networking :: Unable To Authenticate My WiFi Connection / Why Is So?

Jan 23, 2011

I switched to the b43xx (lp-phy) driver, as opposed to the broadcom STA driver which I previously had. I have dell 8312b/g lp-phy(mini) wireless card.

I have the wireless detection, but when I attempt to connect to Fios WiFi it continuously asks for my WEP (I have the correct WEP and I have typed it in correctly) and fails to connect.

I've read about the driver and firmware on linuxwireless and kernel.wireless. org.

http://pastebin.com/w44Xbgw3 (lspci -nnk output)
http://pastebin.com/C5BDhgZ9 (iwconfig output - this printed while trying to access the network)

Why is this happening? How can I fix this?

What can I do? I've read somewhere that in the RC there where problems with the network applet I don't know what... can this be reconducted to that?

Debian Configuration :: Networking: Connected To Wifi, Webpages Won't Resolve?

Oct 2, 2010

I just installed Debian with the latest testing iso, and I'm having problems connecting to the web via browser. I can ping hostnames (i.e. google.com, debian.org, etc.) from the terminal and it resolves just fine, but if I try to load a page from Iceweasel or Epiphany it says the page won't load because it can't resolve the hostname. Can someone tell me what I'm missing?the detail that I'm running amd64. I've checked iptables and found no entries, and for good measure I flushed it to be certain. I also checked resolv.conf but that looked normal, just a nameserver entry pointing to my home router. I'm new to Debian, but have used Linux for years, and I'm genuinely stumped. I'm sure the solution will smack me in the head for its simplicity, but nonetheless I need at least a shove in the right direction.

Networking :: How To Resolve Hostnames On DHCP Home Network?

Jun 28, 2010

(although I'm running Solaris, I've posted here as I expect Solaris/LINUX is irrelevant) - more of a general network Q.I have a PC running Solaris 10 (hostname MARKUNIX) and a laptop running WinXP (hostname MARK-LAPTOP). Both are connected to broadband via a router. IP addresses for each are determined via DHCP (192.168.1.nn) and I do not leave either on, 24x7. I am running Oracle on MARKUNIX and want to be able to refer to it by hostname when using Oracle tools on my laptop. Each machine can ping each other ok by ip address and curiously the Solaris PC can ping MARK-LAPTOP (I'm not sure how it resolves that?) - importantly the laptop cannot ping MARKUNIX.Now I could add MARKUNIX to my laptops hosts file but that would mean changing the file each time I boot up as the ip address for MARKUNIX will keep changing (DHCP).

Is there a way to refer to MARKUNIX without having to keep changing ip addresses and use DHCP? As I understand it the 192.168 address is private and is not really the 'real' ip address and as such can be manipulated(fixed?) even whilst using DHCP?Am I right in thinking that a static ip from my broadband supplier is the ip of my connection (router) and I'll still have the same private network referencing issues? What I've covered above pretty much is the extent of my knowledge of networking so bear that in mind please.

Ubuntu Networking :: Newbie's WIFI Can't Find Home?

Jan 16, 2010

I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu 9.10. I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an older Compaq Presario 6100. Initially my built in wireless was not working. I searched the forum and was able to get my wireless working (I think) by installing the BCM43XX driver. I assume that works on my computer since I believe the BCM4306 driver is needed. Anyway, assuming my wireless is working, my home network does not show up in the pick list when I go to network<wireless.

I've spent a couple of hours already researching this and up someone can help me out. I would really like to give this new system a try.

Networking :: Home.asp Application On Wifi Router?

Sep 9, 2010

I updated a firmware of my wifi router (small black box with antenna). The router is managed via web browser at address 192.168.1.100. I opened Mozilla Firefox connected to the router, but a 'home.asp' application - an interface one can to set up a configuration - running on the router didn't work properly. When I tried to change some settings, and eg. clicked a confirmation button nothing happened. I solved the problem staring Windows and making a connection using IE - this time that home.asp application did OK. The question is what may caused problems? A bug in this app or in general *.asp applications don't communicate well with browsers other than IE or simply they don't 'like' Linux?

Ubuntu Networking :: Netbook Cannot Connect To My Home Wifi Network?

Jan 22, 2011

I got my netbook in the mail yesterday, opened it up, logged in, and Windows 7 was installed. Being a Windows hater my whole life, I followed a friend's advice and downloaded Ubuntu netbook, made a USB drive, changed the BIOS settings, all that. Here's when the stupidity occurs--I decided to go ahead and install Ubuntu without trying it, and to delete Windows to do so. A couple minutes later I realized that was a really, really stupid idea, so in a panic I turned my netbook off. I turned it back on and it was still on install but not really moving, so I powered off and on again and went back to the "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" choice screen. I chose "Try Ubuntu" and found that it did not recognize my home wifi network or ask me to join--or any wifi network, for that matter.

Now, it did recognize my wifi network the few minutes I spent on Windows 7, so I tried to change the BIOS settings back to where I could just use that until I figured out the problem. But no matter which setting I tried (HDD/SDD just gives me a black screen, and FDD and LAN do the same as the USB drive), I can't get back to Windows, so I guess I did delete it. Which leaves me with a netbook that can only connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Which kind of defeats the purpose.

Questions I should answer:

1. How am I trying to get online? My home's wireless network. We have a router. All the other laptops in the house connect fine.

2. Who is my internet service provider (and in which country?) COX, United States.

3. Can you get online with any other method? Yes, the internet works fine with an ethernet cable.

4. How am I getting online to post in this forum? My parent's laptop.

5. What hardware are you using? Toshiba N505 netbook and a router. I can give more information about the router if you need it, but I doubt it's the program since the other laptops are fine.

Give me one moment and I will add some code that it gives me when I put in the commands this website tells me to.My two final questions are:

1. Is there any way to recover Windows without buying it again?

2. How can I get Ubuntu to connect to my home wifi network?

EDIT: Here's some code. I have no idea what it means, but hopefully you do.

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".See "man sudo_root" for details.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connected To WiFi At Home - Unable To Connect At Work?

Sep 7, 2010

I have a Dell Mini 10v with a fresh install of latest Ubuntu Netbook Edition. I have enabled proprietary drivers in order to get the WiFi card to work and managed to connect at home, starbucks etc. Good stuff.

For some reason I can detect but not connect to the WiFi at work - I get prompted for the pword and after entering it the WiFi indicater will pulse for a while only to return to the pword prompt. yes, I have the right pword and can connect my iPhone and other laptops. I am really puzzled by this and really need to get on the WiFi at work - wired connection works.

my colleague has the same dell model with windows 7 installed and is able to connect fine - I really don't want that @@@@ installed just to get WiFi. I know password entry error is the obvious solution but I connect new windows devices to it routinely and had other people try too.

Debian :: WiFi Connection Cause Squeeze To Crash / Resolve This?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm using Debian-Squeeze, and the command "uname -a" results in "Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Sat Jul 24 01:47:24 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux". The desktop environment is Gnome 2.30.2.

My problem is wireless connection causes the system to crash. Here is the detail: my university uses a WiFi service that we have to enter our ID and password in a certain web page in the browser to get access to the Internet, while the WiFi signal is automatically picked up. My laptop crashes each time I connecting to such wireless network. But back home, when connecting to my own WiFi, everything is all right.

As the only thing I can do when such crash happens is to press the power button to force the computer to shut down, I've gathered no more information till now.

Does anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

Fedora Hardware :: BCM 4306 Can't See Any WiFi Networks / Resolve This?

Jan 13, 2010

I have FC 12 running and everything was working fine for about 2 weeks or so. Then today after I put my Daughter to bed, I booted up the laptop and it could not find any of the many WiFi networks that are present in my area, and when I tried to get it to connect to my home network through a saved configuration in the Network Connections Manager it kept asking for my WPA2 Password but it would not connect. So I got out my delopitated Cat-5 cable and tried to do an update and see if that would solve the problem. But alas it did not work (hence the posting of this tread ).

I even tried to unload the "B43" driver using code...

But that did not do the trick either. Is there any way to get it to work again without doing a re-install of the entire Operating System? I already had to do that, and it is a big pain in the A$$ because of a defective ATI Card in the laptop.

I have a Belkin f5D8236-4 router, with the SSID "linksys". I also have an Ubuntu 10.04 machine which has working wireless internet. I know almost nothing about networking, but from what I can tell, openSUSE 11.3 seems to have trouble with DHCP, specifically setting the dynamic IP address. To try to go about fixing this, I attempted to set a static IP, but I am quite confused by all the settings.

I have tried both the graphical "Network Manager" (KDE, Gnome, and command line versions) and ifup, both with no luck.

Here is the information from the working Ubuntu machine code...

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.4 - Cannot False Authenticate With AP

May 13, 2010

I'm on ubuntu 10.4 and Cant seem to falsely authenticate myself with my AP. I am trying to break a wep key on one of my older linksys routers; It continues to say this:

Code:

11:39:44 Sending Authentication Request (Open System) [ACK]
11:39:46 Sending Authentication Request (Open System) [ACK]

Attack was unsuccessful. Possible reasons:
* Perhaps MAC address filtering is enabled.
* Check that the BSSID (-a option) is correct.
* Try to change the number of packets (-o option).
* The driver/card doesn't support injection.
* This attack sometimes fails against some APs.
* The card is not on the same channel as the AP.
* You're too far from the AP. Get closer, or lower the transmit rate.

root@kevin-laptop:/home/kevin#
I'm using an eeepc 701 it has an Atheros card and does injection. I have also tried it with backrack 4 and it works perfectly (it falsely authenticates with the ap and decrypts the wep key) I just cant seem to get it to work on ubuntu 10.4. Could it be a kernel issue? I found out that there is a bug in the new(er) kernel(s). If you use an older kernel (I used 2.6.31-14 which can be found here) and it magically works.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Server - Authenticate With Passwords?

Jan 2, 2010

True or False: If you have a user on your Linux/Samba machine with a password, example:
User = Bob
Password = Password0
And Bob is on an XP computer, where his username is also Bob and his password is also Password0, is it normal for Bob to go to:

\SambaServer, double click on Bob's share (valid users = Bob only) and Bob get RIGHT in without being prompted?

On my prior setup, the user HAD to log in. If they wanted auto login next time with their credentials, they had to check "remember password." But now it's as if Samba knows who they are. It's very strange. What's the normal behavior? Must EVERYBODY authenticate with passwords, or if the Windows credentials are the same as Samba does it just somehow auto-detect it and allow them through?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wusb11v4 Sees Router Cannot Authenticate Wep

Jan 17, 2010

I'm getting rather bewildered.

I followed these instructions to setup my wusb11 driver using ndiswrapper:

[URL]

But when I try to ifup the interface, I get:

DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 4
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 10
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 14
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3
No DHCPOFFERS received.

iwconfig shows that no essid is assigned, even though I have specified one in /etc/interfaces.

Then if I go through the desktop gui Preferences -> Network to setup my wireless connection, /etc/interfaces does not seem to change but iwconfig then reports the essid is assigned.

Anyway, on my default taskbar there is a wireless icon. Clicking on that shows the wireless access points in the area. I see my own. When I try to connect to it, it prompts for my wep key. I enter the key, it thinks, and then acts as if I'd entered the wrong key.

Specifically of course, I'd like this to get fixed so that I can happily surf the net again, etc.

But I also I'm wondering why it seems that there is a disconnect between /etc/interfaces and Preferences->Network. If I type in a WEP key in the gui, I would think that it should appear in /etc/interfaces.

I'm definitely a Ubuntu wireless newbie, and not very experienced at Ubuntu anyway.
