View 1 RepliesI am new to all this so I don't understand much of the language used in linux or backtrack, but I founded in a forum how to hack wep and I did this steps: I have a IWL 4965 AGN I tried to hack a wireless but I get errors, this is what I did:
1)airmon-ng

2)airmon-ng stop wlan0
wlan0 intel 4965 a/b/g/n iwl 4965 - [phy0]

Not for illegal purposes of course, it's just my computing teacher bet me that I couldn't obtain the schools wireless key without actually asking someone for it. Now I am an idiot and can't get anything like airsnort etc to work. So I was wondering if there is a nice simple"click here then click here then done" GUI I could use. O btw the encoding is WEP.

I have tried and tried to install this program. I end up in dependency hell if I go one way, then if I go the other it can't find files...
I have tried searching google, the forums and everything else I can think of, but all attempts at a solution and I can't find one that works.
All online walkthroughs don't work either.
I am trying to get Gnome's Mail Notification to work with Yahoo! Mail.
Just completed the online update of Ubuntu 10 -> 10.04 LTS. One problem, on boot keeps trying to mount "UDEVD-WORK...." (rest of line disappears before I can write down), which fails because it does not exist.

a. the machine boots up
b. files are played in dragon player
c. the machine shuts down
my sound does not work when:
1. i try to play streaming flash videos online (e.g. videos videos show the image but no sound will play)
2. the same goes for vlc media player: images yes, sound no.
3. i use skype *edit: additional problem*
i made no changes, that i know of, to my machine before this started happening. one day everything was working fine and i turned off my machine to go to sleep. the next day, i turn on my machine, and surprise, the sound doesn't work in some instances.
When i got to a site such as You Tube of South Park Studios the vidio playes fine but the pause, play , fullscreen ect... Buttons dont work unless it click on them multiple times!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI think it is very easy to hack passwords in Linux, but I did not try it yet. If you use sudo you get 3 attempts for the correct password. But if you get enough time it should be no problem to hack it by bruteforce. Imagine a script an attacker places on your machine which runs for a few hours or days. I think it is much more effective to delete the user out of the admin (or adm?) group so that user cannot be any danger anymore. You would have to login with root and readd the user then.
You now say: but if you login with root you got almost the same effect as with sudo. Of course it is the same. That is why I would use a system (not sure which yet) to create sub enviroments of your OS, which got the attribute that they can run without root, only got one account that can sudo and once sudo access is denied there is no other way to login as root. You just can repermit sudo access by the parent os layer.
I am having a problem with nautilus since today. I was hacking on glib and trying a few things with the way stuff gets mounted, after a while i noticed that nautilus was seriously broken. Network, Computer, and all volumes are not displayed anymore. I wanted to revert to the original state, and tried to reinstall glib, gvfs and nautilus with the packet manager, but it didnt change anything. how i can restore everything to normal. I tried running nautilus as root or reinstall gvfs-backend and other things but it didnt work.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just bought an almost new netbook with the Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on it. It's made by System76 and was designed to work with Ubuntu. I downloaded Xubuntu-desktop and wicd and it now has a lot of software on it. It connects to the internet easily with a wired connection, but I cannot get it to find an ip address on my unencrypted home wireless network...it does see my network, though.I don't see the name of the hardware when I type sudo lspci. How can I find what chipset I have for my wireless device? A how to get online wirelessly?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting online, and therefore getting software, codecs etc, (I'm using another computer for this post) because the only option I have to connect to the web is through 56k dial-up modem, and this is apparently akward with ubuntu. I'm currently trying to work out how to get Ubuntu to recognize my modem. I have over-written Vista, which was previously on my laptop, although I did make recovery discs (though I really don't want to have to use them).
This is making it difficult for me to even find the model of my modem (it would involve reinstalling Vista and checking for the device under device manager, or Vista equivalent).I was advised to download the "Official Ubuntu documentation", and that this had a 'how to' section regarding dial-up modems. I downloaded it and searched it and found nothing as such. I also have downloaded the Ubuntu pocket guide and found nothing on the topic in it either.I can get online (via dial-up) on my XP machine, and also have USB storage sticks.
A couple of weeks ago I connected my desktop to the internet and upgraded Ubuntu. I haven't used it since then, until today, when I took the ethernet cord out of my laptop and stuck in in the desktop. The light next to the place you plug the cord in came on and Ubuntu tried to connect, but eventually it just said "You are now disconnected." I restarted and it continued to do this. I plugged the ethernet cord into the laptop and now I am online. What is going on here??
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter installing 10.04 netbook remix on my acer aspire one, I have experienced all sorts of trouble. I can't get online, not with the wireless network, or with a usb-cable directly from the router. When I try to install the hardware drivers i get a message: there are no hardware drivers installed or something like that. There are no other OS on the harddrive, just 10.04 netbook remix. Another problem is the startup. Sometimes it boots right away, other times I've have to restart/reboot. 3-4 times before it works. How comes? Is there any way to download the missing packages/firmware to a usb-stick and then install it on the the netbook?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI went away from home for a few days, ... Now I am back at home and noticed, that my server is going out with 100% available bandwidth. The server is mainly Http / Ftp / Mail server, so I stopped all services, to see which one it is. ervices stopped, still 100Mbps go out like ants in the flood.
I updated the system, made a backup, installed IPtraf. It seems that I have something 'installed' and my server is running something to attack User computers. It seems to try to find something on random IP's random ports. I am a little bit confused now. As long as my sites are running, I'm ~OK~ but sooner or later I would like to have my bandwidth back. How could I try to hunt down which service/app/process got hacked?
It seems that the monetary system of our society got now more enemy's than friends. Capitalism seems to reach it's end. But my server is serving also ART! Sooner or later we will need to pay copyright even for our thoughts. I was reading today, that the French president wants to punish file sharing as his wife made 3 albums, and wants to get some money ..
My server (CentOS 5.4) is being bombarded 24x7 with IP addresses from China trying to exploit phpMyAdmin. For every one I block on the firewall, half a dozen come to the funeral! It's a pity these morons don't have something better to occupy their time. I'm getting page after page of this (see below) every day and it's been going on for weeks. I don't even have phpMyAdmin on the server. I don't use it and I deleted it.
I've read that you can use .htaccess and / or mod_rewrite to redirect / block them based on any query for phpMyAdmin (they try all letters in upper and lower case, leading to page after page). Unfortunately, I have no idea of how to do this. I already have an .htaccess file. Maybe someone can suggest what to add to stop these pests from wasting my bandwidth and suggest somewhere I could redirect them to to cause them maximum problems. I don't want to block the entire country, seems a bit like overkill, not all Chinese are morons. we aren't even in the USA, so why they are doing this is beyond me.
A TINY sample!

I am so frustrated. I've gone through at least 20 distros in the last couple of days trying to find one that I like and will actually let me go online. I'm kinda bored of Gnome and want to try KDE again, but Knetworkmanager and even WICD don't let me get online. They recognize my wifi dongle, see the available networks, log me into them, tell me I'm connected and getting a good signal, but then I can't even ping Google! No pages will load. I've stumbled around all the network-managing and configuration screens, but nothing has worked.
Look, I'm clearly not a techie. I'm a happy end-user who's been exclusive with Mint for the last 2 years (PCLOS for a year before that) and I've never had to configure squat in either one of them, because they work perfectly out of the box. I'm not opposed to punching stuff into a terminal if it comes down to that, but I'd rather not have to...
Anyway, what can I do to fix this? (My wifi dongle works fine. I just tried it in Mint again.) For the record, the top three distros I'm considering are Sidux, Sabayon K and OpenSuse. I'm not getting internet on those. Ah, and the Mint KDE edition either.
I'm trying to make this script that can check if the computer is online using
Code:
ping -c2 $HOST | grep 'received' | awk -F',' '{ print $2}' | awk '{ print $1}'
and then run
Code:
gvfs-mount smb://address
to mount the share. The idea is to have it check every five seconds or something until it finds the connection. writing the script because I don't really know about programming.
Some time ago, while I was still using Ubuntu 8.10 I began accessing Internet through a proxy server. Even though I had set my system proxy settings - including authentication - to pass the proxy, my online backup service (Jungle Disk) stopped connecting. I finally figured out that I had to include proxy port in the Jungle Disk Desktop tool's configuration (like this: 192.168.0.1:8080). That worked fine until I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 - with the identical proxy setup. This time I can't get any connection at all. Here's the Jungle Disk report:

So, there are these source packages i downloaded, which i want to build with slightly different configure options due to a bug in debian: hfd5-serial and hdf5-openmpi cannot coexist, yet some packages require the serial version of the lib , others require the openmpi.
I downloaded the sources, in order to build them, without the hdf5 thing...
I have already built this from source in Scientific Linux, and i know this can be done without hdf5.
Where do i hack into the debian source tree of a package to remove a configure option...?
./configure ... ... --without-hdf5 ...
A couple of months ago, I replaced a broken down modem for my DSL connection. I've learned time and again that Verizon is completely of no help to Linux customers, and so any problems I ever experience, I''m pretty much on my own. These days, I am running no windows whatsoever. Previously, when I got a new modem I would run verizon's windows software to set up the modem for DHCP, and then any distro I chose to run wo0uld connect automatically.
Well, without the ability to run windows, it's a lot more problematic. I have only managed to get some debian-based distros online by running an application called pppoeconf or pppoe-config. No slackware, and since a few months ago I released my own live CD that's based on Slax, this is embarassing and frustrating to say the least. DNS, pppoe, TCP/IP... this is not my thing.
Now I've got Slackware 13 installed, and I've been running netconfig and pppoe-setup, and according to the results I get when I run pppoe-status, I should be online :
And here is where I was supposed to have posted the results of my non-error messsage, but I don't seem to have saved it from the last time I was loggen into slackware. Looks like I'll have to do it again
env: debian kernel 2.6.31/ gcc 4.x/ hp6910p I encounter a problem whilst trying to connect online using Intel PRO/1000 nic, but fail. It seems the problem of nic (Intel PRO/1000 'e1000e').

What should I do so that I am able to solve this issue or does any resource/ doc tell how to configure e1000e to enable Intel PRO/1000 nic?
