I'm swapping from an OpenBSD 4.5 DHCP server to using Ubuntu 9.10 I notice in /etc/samba on Ubuntu there is a file called dhcp.conf with the singular line "wins server ==" There is no corresponding file in OpenBSD so how do I configure this file
View 2 RepliesI have a folder on my linux server and I want to be able to share files to windows users in this manner :
1. Require login with username and password when accessing file share.
2. Files created by logged in users become owned by them (I can create local accounts for this matter to all the users).
3. Depending on permissions files created by other users can be read only by logged in user.
I thought of going in samba way for this but I'm not familiar with samba enough to make something like this. If any other sharing method is required I can go for it since I'm doing this from a scratch but that only if its not possible with samba.
I'm trying to share a file via Samba on a Ubuntu server that is actually stored on a FreeNAS box. The FreeNAS drives are mounted via NFS and the Samba share contains a symlink to file on the FreeNAS drive.Browsing the Samba share I can see the file and size, but any attempt to read the file fails. It complains about authentication but all credentials across all machines are the same.So, is it possible to share a file this way or is there another way to do this?I know I could create all the profiles on the FreeNAS box but for convenience and ease of maintenance I was hoping to do this via the Ubuntu server

I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. I get the error:

I had a connection to my other Windows computer the other day automatically in the Places-->Network-->Windows Network folder but it now seems to have disappeared. I tried going to Place connect to server and typing in the WIndows computer name but it won;t connect and errors out. I also tried the IP: Cannot display location "smb://%5C%5C192.168.1.36/"
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying for the last few weeks to set up my network but don't see to be getting anywhere. This is what I'd like: I can get Internet on the server but cant work out how to bridge the connection and setup a dhcp server out of eth1. I have installed dhcp3-server and bridge-utils but can't seem to configure them right. The modem uses IP 10.0.0.1 and gateway 10.0.0.138 I'd like to leave the modem settings alone if possible. I don't care what the network IP addresses are but I thought it might be easier to see the difference if they were 192.168.0.0
I am using 10.10 64bit desktop edition for the server/desktop. The laptop has Ubuntu 10.10 and win7 duel boot (Not really worried about getting windows working) HTPC is XBMC Freak on an Asrock ion 330. The desktop is broken at the moment. (ram packed it in) will be running a version of ubuntu at some stage (need funds for more ram). I know there are lots of tutorials out there I just can't find one that explains what I wont to do in easy to understand terms and is up-to-date.
I am trying to compile a LaTeX document using pdflatex on a CIFS/SAMBA network share.
The file compiles fine on the local drive.
Then if I copy it on to the network share and run pdflatex foo.tex I get:

I have 4 user accounts which will be able to access this network share. An administrator account is called "server". I'll call them user1, user2 user4. This is the folder structure:

I don't know which groups I should create. I'm having a hard time setting file/folder permissions. And I wanted to know how to set Samba so that it won't ask for a password when accessing public/group files, but asks for it when accessing private user files.
I am running Ubuntu 10.4 [64bit] on a AMD dual core with 4gb of RAM. My Problem: I am mounting to a Windows share from my Ubuntu box and everything is working as expected however, when a file is added, deleted, or modified the Ubuntu File browser does not reflect that change until the next refresh. The Windows users with Explorer will reflect the change immediately and automatically.
Is there a way to make the Ubuntu File Browser respond like Explorer when mounting to a Windows share? I call this behavior "maintaining state".
I have an ubuntu 11,04 samba domain server, I want to also configure this machine to work as a dhcp server, however this have give me some issues with te windows 7 workstations, my guest is that it have something to do with the iptables because those station do join the samba domain went both server and workstation are conected to a router.

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.
I have karmic on my laptop, and I can't access my windows network. I have had previous versions of ubuntu and managed to configure samba. However, since my last reinstall, I can't get it to work.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI feel ashamed for even asking this, since it seems like there's about 3 samba questions here every day. However after an hour of searching, I keep finding strange variants that aren't what I need.
My Goal: Create a single file share on an Ubuntu Server - share it via samba to Windows clients that are on a domain with active directory. It sure would be nice if AD authentication would work - so users don't have to type in a linux user/passsword each time they want to access the share.
In my adventures, I've found the following items (which may overlap)
1. Joining the server to a Windows Domain
2. Turning the server into a Windows Domain Controller
3. Authentication with LDAP (still not quite sure how/what this would do)
4. Stuff with Kerberos
5. Lots of people bickering about Samba 3/4 & how it's impossible to make Samba a PDC.
I'm not sure if I need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller or not...all I want to do is create a file share and share it on the domain...I don't need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller for that, right? Maybe just a member? Maybe nothing at all?
I guess if I want to authenticate stuff correctly (or forward authentication requests? Not sure), I probably need to join the ubuntu server to the domain...I think.
But let's say I do join it to the domain...then how to I create a file share that is authenticated via active directory rather than a local ubuntu server account? I see a dozen guides on joining the server to the domain, but nobody ever mentions sharing the folder over the domain.
The lines are also blurred between joining Ubuntu to the domain and making it a domain controller. What should I keep an eye out to avoid in these tutorials?
I get lost between the Kerberos/LDAP/Samba/WinBind etc...and I have a feeling I don't need all of these for something this simple.
I am having slight issue with setting up file sharing. I have a windows 7 pc and hp proliant microserver running. I have a raid array which I am using as a share for storing music, pictures etc. When I reboot the debian server I can't connect to the server from the windows 7 PC (I have mapped a network drive) until I go on to the server and restart samba with /etc/init.d/samba restart - then everything works fine. I can ping the server with both ip and hostname but the network drive does not connect - this is straight after a reboot. Is the /etc/init.d/samba restart doing something differently to when the server boots? I have read several posts relating to printer sharing issues which point to samba not starting before cups so I am wondering if samba is starting before some of the relevant networking services.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOn one of my Samba shares on my server I have a folder of mp3 files of my CDs. The one I am having an issue with is "Clarence Carter/Dr. C.C." (yes, the one with the ULTIMATE party song). The "Dr. C.C." folder name is normal locally on the server, but across Samba it comes out "DMOU3A~H". It's definitely Samba doing it, because I get the same result whether accessing the share from Linux or Windoze. I can still access the folder this way, but it would be nice to not have Samba mangle the folder name this way. I am using Samba 3.4.2 on an Athlon64 X2 system running Slackware64.

I am unable to map the drive. On windows, I try to connect using a different user and when I select finish, it prompts me again and adds my workgroup before my user name.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I create a new folder on my ubuntu machine and share it with my windows 7 machine using 'net usershare add <dir> <path>', I can't get write perms in Win 7. It keeps giving me a "You need permission to perform this action'. I've chmod the folder to 777 but still no luck.
The funny thing is, it was all working fine until I tried to add a new usershare yesterday (Can't think what I've changed). I use this sharing method to share all of my development /var/www/ folders so I can work on them from my win machine.
I have had a few problems with my samba smb.conf, and it nuked and rebuilt yesterday. I'm fairly new to the Linux game, and this permissions problem has me baffled.
I have mounted a samba share on my desktop from a remote server (with smb4k). There I created a symlink to "/". When I open the symlink with konqueror it opens the right one (the root directory of the server), but when i open this link with the shell (cd rootfs/), then it opens my local root directory (of my host)... Is it possible to open the right link with the shell?

My desktop is now dual boot, Xubuntu 10.10 has been added to WinXP. The attached parallel printer works fine with either OS. When running XP I can share the printer with my two XP laptops without problem. I cannot share it when the desktop is running Xubuntu. Neither laptop can see the printer. However, if I open the desktop Samba config application, change any parameter, retype in the original parameter, both laptops can see and connect to the shared printer - until I reboot the desktop

With windows I can see the shares, but not browse and all the setting in smb.conf are the same for the folder in the hard drive and the USB disk

When I browse from application is not visible in the desktop folder.

ServerA has an NFS Mount to ServerB at mount point /home/qlogger/logs
I can cd to /home/qlogger/logs on ServerA and see the contents as they would be on ServerB (NFS Working with proper permissions rw).
I have a samba share setup on ServerA to share the NFS Mounted Directory (/home/qlogger/logs)
I connect with my windows host and am able to view the files and folders. I can create folders just fine however; when I go to copy a file from the windows machine to the samba share I receive a message saying the file is locked.
I have disabled oplocks in samba and the problem still persists.
so i found an older computer i want to play with as a file server. ubuntu server edition, installed gnome GUI (to make things easier for now, i plan on removing it later) and used [URL].. to configure my 1.5tb harddrive so my windows machines can access it. i had everything working but than a fatal crash made me start from scratch (os and all) now i am unable to access the samba share from a machine running windows 7, but i can access it from a machine running windows XP using the same login and password i set up for windows 7.this makes me believe it's a problem with windows 7 and not samba.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm able to connect to a networked Windows machine and its shares using the Places -> Network -> Windows network interface, but unable to do so using smbclient at terminal command line. I can see the shares using:
smbclient -L //server -U username
But when issuing the command:
smbclient //server/service -U username
I get:

The share name has spaces, like

I use 40 to fill in the spaces. This problem must be something fairly simple if I can connect via the Places GUI but not through the command line.
I have this samba share for ghosting images to (backing up computers at work) and I can read the ghost images just fine from the share, but I am unable to write to the share. From any windows environment I have tried, I get a disk is full error. I have 200GB+ free space, so this is not the actual issue. I believe there is a write permission somewhere that I am overlooking. My setup basically lets me log in under the username samba from a client machine.

I've tried chown on /media/Images to make it owned by samba, but it just reverts once I remount the partition. Either that or my eyes are playing tricks on me.
