I have installed nomachine on my windows 7 laptop and when I connect to the server I receive the error message:
"Authentication failed for user [username]"
Which user am I supposed to log in with? Is it the same user as I use on the server or is this a separate nx user? When I receive this message is it because of the user or the ssh key I use?
I am not exactly newbie with GNU/Linux, but definitely new to SSH/NX stuffs. I followed the below tutorials for installing FreeNX so that I can access my desktop like TeamViewer in windows.

So I don't know exactly if this is where to put this. Because I think this might be NoMachine's problem, but I'm not sure. I am trying to set up FreeNX, and I got it working to connect from my work laptop (windows 7) to my home computer (ubuntu 10.04).
I have it going on a different SSH port, and it claims I'm using custom Keys. But, NoMachine still requires me to put in a password to connect. But I can't do that because I have my ssh setup to key-authentication ONLY.So I can't connect to my home machine UNLESS I turn on password-authentication also. But I don't want password authentication on. So, how can I connect without using passwords? Do I need to use a different client other than NoMachine NX-client? Or is this a setup I have wrong in my ubuntu stuff.
I figure it must be NoMachine, because I can't even attempt to login if I don't first put in a password.
This thread (nxserver now broken?) has inspired me to install FreeNX and the client from nomachine on openSUSE-11.2 (this is the version used on both, server and client machine). The good news is: basically it works. I can connect and get the desktop. However, I have some trouble with the keyboard. Up and Down arrow keys do not work. The up arrow triggers a screen snapshot. The down arrow key does nothing. I tried to connect using qtnx as well. This does not work. Result is:

I have been spending hours and hours trying to find a "Remote installation for Dummies" ....kind of step-by-step approach. But after several evenings googling and reading. This is how far I got: I have installed FeeNX on my server and after sudo nxserver -- status I get a reply like this:

so to me that looks like the server process is running. I also installed the windows Nomachine on my laptop and hooked it all up in my local network (so no routers whatsoever) I disabled the firewalls on both my laptop and my server. just in case configured the client for port 22 and the fixed IP address of my server. even imported the users.id_dsa.pub key in the client. long story short: I only get that annoying little error window from Nomachine saying: "Cannot initialize the display service"
I am usually the last one to post on forums, but I can't for the life of me get FreeNX working on my CentOS box. I have also read many posts, many how-to's, many troubleshooting guides, and absolutely nothing is working for me. It's Crazy. First of all, I've installed FreeNX before, with little to no trouble. I am trying (desperately) to setup freeNX so that I can access my Mandriva box from my Macbook over my network. I have great need to be able to do this. Here's the necessary info for you: Mandriva PC: running Mandriva 2010.0 with freeNX installed from the Mandriva repos Macbook: running OS 10.4 with the Nomachine NX Client installed Now, I have followed the setup from the Mandriva wiki as well as the freenx wiki to no avail. I simply cannot connect the Macbook's NX client to the server. I get an authentication failed message. However, I can ssh from the Macbook to the server just fine (that's how I'm getting most of this work done).

I have a remote Lucid machine running Neatx to which I can successfully connect using the NoMachine nxclient under Windows. Using the same connection credentials under Karmic and nxclient doesn't work.
I attach screen shots of the session logs under both Windows and Karmic. They appear identical except for the 'Using shared memory parameters' field. Is this important? No authentication errors appear, so I don't think that's the problem. The Karmic session displays 'Established the display connection' and then fails after exactly one minute.
We have a lab at our school that has DevonIT thin clients. We want to connect to Ubuntu via xdmcp or freenx from these clients, and we want users to be able to connect to our Novell file server from these clients. I can't find instructions on how to install the client, which I found at KDE-Apps.org. It is a tar.gz file. I'm not new to Linux, but rarely install apps from source. I want to use nomachine, instead of freenx, and well it isn't working. SSH server works and all, because freenx works., same for neatx. But I hear with nomachine you can see the main display of the computer? Is this true? Well one way to find out, but whenever I try to login I get: Authentication failed for user x. I don't know why, neatx and freenx worked, even x2go, but not this.

I have been messing around with freenx to see if I can support my customer via remote desktop... I have installed the server on Ubuntu Karmic and the client on Windows 7. I love linux but need the windows computer for customer work and that is why I chose to install the client on windows. I setup the server the best I could and created custom keys which I then copied to windows and imported them to the freenx client. I am looking for security for my customer and that is why I chose custom keys... There are several issues to deal with but I want to just get started to see where it takes me. I added the test server computers ip address to the freenx client configuration and tried to connect to Ubuntu... I have left the port as 22 at the moment
Desktop setting on the client...I chose vnc which seems to be a good choice according to all the material I have been reading....Other settings I have left alone at the moment to see how things work.... All that said - I have the login window asking for information... I have the password asking for information....and I have the session wanting information....? Obviously I understand that login info can be set on the server and the password...but I haven't seen how to set up that? Of course I am testing the server from a client on my home network at the moment - but the customer has his own router as do I so those settings will need to be looked at as well.
Also, I would like users to authenticate against using LDAP rather having created manually in the NX server. I installed using yum install freenx nx and rename the node.conf.sample to node.conf and installed the windows client. but when I am trying to conenct the nx server it says it is connected but it gives me NX> 202 Authenticating user: nxNX> 208 Using auth method: publickeyNX> 204 Authentication failed.I have change this nx user in sshd_config file to user that i created using nx server command which exists in local machine.

As I want a central ldap based user management, I have setup a working ldaps configuration. I am able to login as a ldap user via ssh.
Now the strange issue I am facing is that the freenx-server won't let me login to my server anymore when I enable the following setting in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

Naturally if I disable UsePAM, ldap based logins will fail because they are passed through PAM.

According to Ubuntu documentation, Neatx should be installed on Lucid but there is no support for this on the Neatx homepage. In fact, the Neatx webpage says they are not doing releases because of bugs. With that said will FreeNx work on Lucid?

At some point I decided to write an init script to control FreeNX behaviour (start, stop, status, setup), since the Ubuntu version has one (called freenx-server) and openSUSE doesn't, but I noticed that it was not necessary, as FreeNX got started automatically... but how ? I could not find any init.d script or command which would start the FreeNX server. Indeed it wasn't actually running :

For a Secure Remote Desktop on Ubuntu 9.10 here is how I did it using OpenSSH, FreeNX and a router with DD-WRT v24. Pic of it in use at bottom of post, transferring a file and remote desktop at the same time.
For the purposes of this guide I will use a Desktop as the Server (Host) which is at home. The Client will be a Laptop that I can use to control the Desktop remotely. First you should already be familiar with the Terminal which is where you enter commands (anything in a "Code:" box).
In Ubuntu it is in Applications > Accessories > Terminal In Kubuntu it is usually on the lower left taskbar and is called Konsole I am using Ubuntu so you may have to make some adjustments to this guide if you are not using Ubuntu. Installing OpenSSH (for the rest of this guide I will refer to it as only SSH)

After a recient update to the freenx libraries KDE on Kubuntu 10.04 stopped working but other desktops like gnome kept running. The problem wasn't in the normal log files, but it was found in the .xsession-errors file in the user directory on the server. After the update NX is trying to start kde with the /usr/bin/startkde4 command which doesn't exist. Instead make a link from /usr/bin/startkde to the non existent /usr/bin/startkde4 and it will work again. To do this use the command:

I just tried FreeNX. I work great. I am thinking about uninstalling the vino/vnc on my machine.
However, I'd like to know if FreeNX can access the session that open locally on the server. I tried session 0 and 1, none of them can access the local session.
For default vnc, the connection will let you access the local session on the server. Can FreeNX do that?

Here I chose 'Create new custom keys' and SSH. After copying the client.id_dsa.key file to my laptop, I was able to log in no problem. However, I decided to check and used another computer (running qtnx as a client) to attempt a login with the default key.
It still worked.
Have I missed something in the fine print here? If not, is there a way to fix this behavior?
Sorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.
I've created a brand new CentOS 5.4 (Final) 64bit machine AMI on Amazon EC2. This was based off an existing image. I was able to follow the wiki to add NX server. I am using WIN XP desktop for NX client.
I can connect to the EC2 machine and get the GNOME desktop fine. I see the usual CentOS desktop and poke around.
Q/Problem:
I expected to open the Terminal window and get a shell prompt to su into root user (I need to be root to install some software that needs GUI). I do not want to install this from my plain SSH connection to EC2 (hence the NX server etc.).
When I open the Terminal window, all I get is the NX>105 prompt. I need to get to a shell prompt so I can su into root. For life of me, I cannot get around this prompt (I looked at NX documentation too). Note that this is a prompt NOT on client but on the remote machine. I do not need this as I'm already authenticated and logged in to remote GNOME desktop.
Obviously the TERMINAL is running some NX start up script (I've no idea which one). If there is some other way to sudo into root?
Some FreeNX start-up troubles here, need a hand. 1) I am trying to establish a connection from my workplace PC on my workplaces's LAN to my home PC on my private LAN (LAN-to-LAN). Just typing in the public IP of the target LAN in the "Host" field gets me nowhere, as it fails to connect due to a denial at port 22 SSH - even though I've done the forwarding in my home router and punched the required hole in the local firewall of the target machine.

In Gnome Places->Connect To Server dialog, I am having problem using the Custom Location Service Type. I enter in the URI as

Which would be fine if there was actually a place for me to enter the name which there is not. What am I doing wrong. This is the first time I have tried using the Connect To Server dialog. Normally I just use a script I wrote to mount my share in a folder on my local drive as some programs cannot access the mounted network folder. In a browser all I have to do is:

I tried using Windows Shares, but that did not work either. It does work if I click on network and access the share that way, but some programs like firefox and a few others that I want to save a file to my network drive do not show the network unless the share is mounted in a folder. I'm noticing that the performance for FreeNX Server under Fedora Core 14 is really bad. The screen refreshing is painfully slow. I'm thinking maybe the issue is related to the use of opengl in the X driver? how I can disable opengl entirely, so that the X server is only using 2d rendering?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI set up 9.10 as a file server at my house, connected through the router via LAN. I had everything working, using it as a Samba file server. I moved to to my college apartment and I am now having troubles... I changed the network information in /etc/networking/interfaces to what it should be (or at least I thought so...)
I can ping myself, but nothing else. Also, on my router configuration page, the server is coming up as a connected device with the correct IP address that I set it to.
My problem is that i cannot connect to anything that is running on this server via WAN. i can connect to everything from anywhere just fine through LAN though... i have all in use ports opened up on my router. i tryed messing with the ubuntu firewall and even tryed turning it off. but no luck. btw i am running ubuntu server 10.04 with matching desktop!

When I try to login from a client I get "Authentication Failed for User My Username" I can use the same client to connect to another NX Server on my network so I know the client works. I'm not clear if I need to set up a user, or if I can just logging with the username & password from the host (which is what I'm trying).
