Ubuntu Networking :: Bypass Router DNS Caching With Public DNS (but Keep DHCP)?

My router is crap. If I use DHCP it sets all the computers DNS to itself and all DNS requests get cached in the router. It even starts to loose some DNS request if to many are made at once. On my windows PCs this isnt a problem I just set DNS to google's public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and bypass my router and ISP alltogether but when i go to pref>network_connections i have to either set DHCP or manual, there is no option to set DHCP with custom DNS.
I'm sure there must be a way to do this in terminal, can someone tell me how?
I'm using ubuntu 10.10.

My Ubuntu server is now providing routing duties to my network, but I'm having trouble opening ports to my network. I have a DynDNS account, so the IP is always current, but I can't ping even my IP directly.
My network map looks like
Internet > SpeedTouch DSL modem with DHCP > eth1 > Ubuntu > eth0 > LAN
With the modem providing a 192.168.1.xx IP to eth1, I can browse fine. The default gateway is my modem. I switched to the public IP of the modem so I could use iptables for firewall duties, but I was locked out of the internet. No gateway was set when I did that, but eth1 received the public IP of my modem.
How can I use the public IP assigned to eth1?

I have a registered domain (let say domain.com ) with a web server (www.domain.com) hosted somewhere online.
I handle the mail part in my private network, by giving the MX my WAN IP (111.222.333.444 )and NAT routing mail stuff to the mail server (10.7.167.3) It works fine.
I will have to handle sub-domains (foo.domain.com & bar.domain.com) and also another domain (anotherdomain.com) in my network. In that case NAT routing isn't going to work ...
What do I need to set this up ? I guess I need a DNS server in my network but I'm not sure if there won't be a conflict somewhere with the Registrar's DNS and mine. Or do I have to take the whole DNS of my domain on this new server and make it half public/half private in some way ?

eth0= LAN IP= 192.168.1.1/24

My ISP gave me IP Pool 110.88.90.68/29 to use this on my LAN. my question is how can I use this IP pool on LAN side interface. i think now its simple. 192.168.1.0 /24 is my LAN network and I can not change this, because i have near 180 PCs on my LAN.

I installed PCLOS 2010.07 into my laptop and dual booting with windows vista. Now I got a weird problem that is when I connected linux to my wifi router, it cannot obtain IP! (it still work correctly in windows, problem just with linux) I had to manually set ip and that worked. Now i wonder what is happening, because I didn't see this problem with PCLOS 2009 borrowed from my friend few months ago.

Fresh install of 10.04.1 server; installs seamlessly; finds network no problem.
However, establishing static connection is driving me batty. Will not take. I've reconfigured "interfaces" file several times. My fingers are numb ifdown-ing and ifup-ing and /etc/init.d/network restart-ing.
I have two files in /etc/network ... interfaces and interfaces~ (one static and the other dhcp). I can switch them in and out of play. The dhcp works and pings out like a champ. static is dead, just dead. Cannot ping router ... nothing.

when I change the hostname on my Ubuntu server, the DHCP clients table in my router is dropped.I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu Server 10.10. My router is a Linksys WRT54GL with firmware version 4.30.15. I'm changing the hostname by modifying /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname. I've also tried changing the hostname using the Linux hostname command in a terminal, but this does not seem to behave correctly according to the manpages (it does not actually change the hostname, or update either of the aforementioned files).
I've also tried using a different router - a Linksys BEFSR41 - but the DHCP table is still dropped when I change the hostname on my server (although this router is not all that different from my other one).

I noticed that my internet connection wasn't automatically brought up each time I logged into Fedora so I opened the system-config-network tool and edited my network adapter by checking the box marked "automatically start at boot/login." To my surprise, the connection went down and upon trying to click on the device to let the manager bring up the connection the greyed-out phrase "device not managed" appeared underneath the device name and wouldn't allow me to connect.
Even when I used ifconfig/dhclient to get the connection up nothing happened. I could get the router to assign an IP address through DHCP, pinged a few sites to make sure it was legit, but still couldn't use firefox to browse anything. Seems as if network manager GUI is conflicting with command line attempts to bring the network up. I'd like to permanently disable system-config-network if possible because it's acting screwy!

I've only been using linux for a few days so I don't know all the tricks. I'm pretty savy configuring windows networks however.My adapter is (according to windows) a: CNet PRO200WL PCI fast ethernet adapterLinux says it is a: 21x4x DEC-tulip compatible 10/100 EthernetI do seem to be getting an ip address from the DHCP router, but I cannout ping any other ips or connect to the internet.I've tried a bunch of different options, switching things back and forth, but it still doesn't work, and honestly i don't even know what some of the options mean.

the only error message I can find comes from "dmesg|tail"all it shows is

Within the documentation of example OpenVPN setups there is a setup that shows an OpenVPN Server with two network interfaces. One interfaces is plugged into the public internet network and the second interface is plugged into the private network.
Normally I assume that it would be best to place the OpenVPN system inside the network behind the router and firewall and open only the ports needed on the router to allow access to the OpenVPN system. All other router ports would be closed. This is the first example they show. To see what I am talking about see page(s) 6-7 here -> [URL]
If one were to use the two interface public facing setup, when would that setup best be justified? I guess if you didn't want to open any ports on the router/firewall then this could be justified but then you have to lock down this public system individually instead of having it protected by the network firewall.

My ISP provides my internet via DHCP. I have a home wireless router to provide internet access, wired for my desktop machine and wireless for my laptop. My question is: Is it possible to configure the router (the Access Point) to provide internet to the desktop and the laptop via static IP? Currently I have managed to configure the internet to them via DHCP and it works. I am just curious to know whether it is possible to provide the internet for them by static IPs, given that the internet that actually goes into the Access Point (the wireless home router), is DHCP.I fiddled with this a lot yesterday, but I only managed to get a working configuraton by DHCP for both the desktop and the laptop. If I supply them with static IPs, I can only ping the Access Point, but not beyond it. So does it at all make any sense to try to configure them by static IPs, i.e. is that virtually possible?

Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces

Currently I have my eth0 interface getting a DHCP address but at times the DHCP server will not be reachable. Sooo what I would like my server to do is if it cannot find a DHCP server assign a static address to eth0. Then start the DHCP service so it can then dish out some addresses.How can I do this? Surely it is possible

I get assigned an IP from the university's server. Every now and then, a student will plug in his router to the network trying to get wifi in his/her room.
And by doing so will start assigning IPs on the network, while rendering useless the university dhcp server, which has to cope with a higher number of pc's.
How can I specify to dhclient (or the linux system in general) NOT TO obtain IP addresses given by a specific mac address ?

I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 PC on my home network acting as a VPN gateway. It is using vpnc & iptables to provide access to the remote network - other computers on my local network have routing rules in place to go via the Ubuntu gateway if trying to reach an IP on the remote network. This works just fine, except DNS lookups for names on the remote network don't work.
I'm trying to solve this by using Bind9 on the gateway, so it can act as DNS for the local network. I don't want to create excess VPN traffic or load on the remote DNS, so I want the gateway to forward the lookup to my ISPs DNS first and if the name is not found then try the remote network DNS. Is this possible, or is there another (better) way around this? The Bind9 configs seem to admit multiple DNSs, but use them in a failover sense - only using secondary DNSs when the first one in the list is not reachable at all.

Now, If I am using firefox then I have configured it to use proxy server and required login details and etc. But, my eclipse, ssh, git and all those needs internet connection as well... Is there anything like which sets all details (proxy server, user name and passwd) system wide ? So that I dont have to pass it to each application...

installed dansguardian and now working fine.I got a small problem. People bypassing proxy settings in firefox, means they go to settings and changes proxy settings to no proxy.. how to prevent this? I have a lifttime premium account at Megaupload.com. Recently I found that megaupload has blocked all IPs in my area. I have sent emails to their tech but nothing has returned!!I have tried to use proxies to download stuff from megaupload, however, none of them works for suspected bandwidth reason, not to mention that it might be slow too.

An application that supports SOCKS 5 protocol can forward its network connection over ssh and dynamically forward to any host name that you specify isn't it ? that means firebox web browser can use SOCKS 5 protocol can be used by pass proxy settings isn't it ? so how can a sys admin remotely detect if a particular user is bypassing proxy settings using SOCKS 5 protocol ?
