Ubuntu Networking :: BleachBit Deleted Drive To Wireless?
Sep 1, 2011
I recently used bleachbit on my desktop and it worked fine, but I was online then when I left I turned it off. When it restarted I had no wireless connectivity and it would not connect, then when I went to update, it gave me: W Failed to Fetch repeatedly as I cant copy as this is my laptop I would like to know why and how to fix it. I tried sudo apt-get update which is how I got the error and helped me realize that BB is not not be used.

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

I recently decided to make use of a computer that had been put away for a while by installing ubuntu on it. I went to do a full install of 11.04 (deleting all files and the other OS, windows) and everything went smooth until I realized that the wifi-card firmware had been deleted along with everything else. I can use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet, but no wi-fi. I tried googling to find the appropriate firmware, but none worked.

I just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

I desperately need to free up some disk space while awaiting better hardware to arrive. Messing with bleachbit's previews, I had a look at what would happen if I went for the Localizations option and got the preview you can see in the attached text file.
I had a look through the list, and the files all seem to be related to languages I don't use (I use English). But it's a long list and I may easily have missed something. Would telling bleachbit to do its thang be okay? Or would it kill my machine. Also, I have had localepurge installed for a very long time. Why is this "localization" stuff still around?

I like cleaning up my install with Bleachbit. I see that when you install it, it also install Bleachbit as root. What is the difference between this and the user version and is it safe to use it as root? I am assuming it cleans up stuff on a deeper level but have always wondered about how safe it would be to use.

I realize bleachbit is supposed to "clean files", but my disk usage is at 11.8%. My disjk usage was at like 6.0%. How in the world did it jump so much? It doesnt appear to be right. The only thing I did not check were the Firefox checkboxes..

I used sbopkg to install Bleachbit.
It does not launch from the 'system' menu - the small icon just bounces and then nothing happens. (user or root)
When I launch it from a terminal, as root, I get the following output:
Code:
bash-4.1# bleachbit
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/bleachbit", line 41, in <module>

I have a 500 GB hard drive connected via a SATA/USB adapter. After connecting it, I did a basic format of the drive with no problem. I then attempted the "Wipe Free Space" option under the File menu in BleachBit, selecting the external drive, and it began the process. It gives me a time estimate of about 300 minutes, but, instead, after a few minutes it says "Done" and gives me the message "[Errno 27] File too large. Disk space recovered: 0 Files recovered: 0 Errors: 1"
What happened? What do I need to do to get this volume wiped?

I stumbled across this privacy app today, it's sort of like a CCleaner for Linux. I only see one mention of it in the forums, and I'm wondering why nobody's using it. It seems to be pretty thorough and preforms as they advertise, the site says it has overwrite capability but I'm not sure what algorithm it's using, as I haven't looked at the code. Anyway seems like something that ought to be in the repos.[URL]...

My brother has an external hard drive that has some personal data on it that he doesn't want to lose. He was reinstalling windows on his machine and deleted both the partition on his internal drive and on his external drive. He installed windows on his internal drive only though. I want to be able to reaccess that data from the drive. All the data should still be on the drive since so write cycles have been done to overwrite it.
I guess deleting the partition removed the partition table or something so the drive doesnt mount. I would prefer to use linux (but windows is ok too) and a free as in beer tool preferably. there are normal recovery tools (I have used get data back before) that scan for any files anywhere that has been overwritten but I don't really need things that have been overwritten; just the data that is still there but not availible because it cant be mounted.

I have two computers with ubuntu 10.04 installed. They both connect to the same wireless router. One computer has an external hard drive that has music, pictures and some documents. another thing, the hard drive has been formatted to ext4. I would like to be able to access that external hard drive from my other computer. I read some post on how to connect to the server through ssh but i think it's the intruction are too old. I tried nfs for server/client, but couldn't set it up, it was a little complicated.

My wireless connection has always slow on my ubuntu desktop. I have always thought this was a matter of hardware, but after reformatting my harddrive because of recent problems, the wireless has slowed to point of ridiculousness. I would guess I had a dial-up connection if I didn't know better. I've tried simple things like rebooting and removing add-ons, but nothing seems to work.

I want to update Bleachbit from the program website, latest version. But get the following ( The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files ) this is good from a security standpoint. But this decision, I would personally take.

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Anyone running this without issues in F15? Tends to black out my screen now... I need to logout and log back in. (It does seem to clean out the system well enough though). Plus I don't seem to have the "Bleachbit As Administrator" option anymore.

I have been using Fedora since almost 1 week by now, and I'm really impressed by its features but there is one very small problem that I face everyday. At the first place, I had setup a profile settings for Network so all my static IP, Hosts, DNS servers were all configured in that profile. Now I had filled in something in the Primary DNS Server and then I had saved it. The internet works after that but when I reboot, that Primary DNS server gets deleted. I have to type it all the time and then click on save and then start using the internet again.

I've brought a friend over to linux from windows. He has some how deleted his "Wired Etho" connection. He said his computer would not shut down(Mint Linux 9), so he unplugged it. You guessed it right after restarting no internet. After checking under "Network Connection" his wired connection is gone. My question is? How to reconfigure a "Wired Etho" connection? He has a dsl connection running a Linksys router(sorry I don't know the model number). I have only talked with him on the phone, so I have not personally checked the system out. I just finished working on it this past sunday and everything was fine.

I was trying to figure out how to get my network drive to mount as a local drive on my computer. This was back on 9.10. Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.
Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?
