Using Kubuntu 11.04, I have all of my movies and music on a NAS, everytime I wish to play something (I have a computer hooked up to my tv this is how I play all media) KDE decides it needs to copy it to a tmp file first, I was unable to find a setting to turn this off and allow the file to simply play straight from the network drive as it did in M$ Windblows probably a dumb question.
View 1 RepliesI had a script before my machine broke recently that would allow me to select a folder then randomly copy MP3's from that folder to a USB drive. I cannot seem to find it again, the closest I came to is one called 'Randomcopy 0.6b' which has been modified for iPod Shuffle, and also the non-iPod version of the same script which appears to run fine but copies a bit too fast and nothing is placed on the device.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using k9copy to extract the five titles in a DVD ISO-image to separate avi-files. I selected the copy option for both audio and video, and made sure all the tracks were selected. The resulting avi's played without sound in Totem. VLC gave an error message that audio format " []" was not supported.
I then did the extract again, selecting aac for the audio processing. The result was the same.
Again, with mp2, the same result.
The DVD contains audio in "mp2 2ch 48KHz 20bps" format (information shown by k9copy).
When I play the video from the ISO, using VLC, sound is ok.
How can I get k9copy to extract the video with sound?
I just upgraded my Kubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04, and now Amarok do this with some audio files (some folders) Looks like is copying something, and that brings a dolphin window and interrumpts any mouse action you are working in that instant. This occurs every 3 - 6 seconds during the playback
It really **** me off
I cant understand the pattern for wich files is doing this.
When i try
amarok -debug
everything seems fine.
When i see ksystemlog... I cant find what is happen,
Of course, this window appears for 1/2 second, so I cant click CANCEL or Pause buttons or try to read more info.
I know that this has probably been around these forms, but still. I recently stumbled upon one .mkv file and I wasn't able to play it in Ubuntu. I'm still not able. Looking at the forums around I see that many folks are able to play .mkv files with ease just running VLC player. So I'm quite confused that I'm not able to. So far I haven't had any problems with neither audio, nor video files in Ubuntu. Anyway, here's what I use: VLC version 1.0.2
(I saw that some folks have been compiling VLC, incluiding specifically the .mkv support, but that was two years ago. Now VLC should support it out of the box...)
And I should have .mkv support in the version of VLC that I have:

When I try to open the .mkv vile in VLC nothing happens. No errors, nothing. And off course neither video, nor audio.
I got a virus through thunderbird and had problems even after I removed it. Thus started over. Used CD to reload windows and then reloaded ubuntu using a CD. In ubuntu can not read CD. It doesn't show on desktop. Is there a program to download?

When I copy files over ( from a PC running Ubuntu 10.10 ) to my Sansa m260 each track is listed multiple times. When I look at the contents with my file explorer on my PC I see only one copy of each track.
I tried deleting all files and starting over again on a fresh battery.
So I don't use gnome, KDE, or XFCE, but I'm running Xubuntu. I'm constantly playing music via nvlc. While that music's still playing, I'd like to be able to hear a sound I run from the command line via

I've tried on and off over the years messing with pulse, esd, etc. output options for vlc, but never figured out exactly how to do this. In Windows, having a batchfile play a .wav at the same time as an mp3 player is playing music "just works" I know there must be a "just works" solution for Linux.
I bought an LG external cd/dvd unit (model: GP08 ).
The problem is that I have no sound when playing DVDs. Everything else works fine. I installed libdvdcss (followed this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ts/PlayingDVDs) but still no sound on DVDs (the DVD works fine on a windows machine).
I have an Acer Aspire One with Karmic Koala.
My newly installed (but not new) DVD drive seems to play some movies some days, but others all the time. I'm pretty sure it's just a little picky about scratches. I can hear it in the drive; when I insert the disk, I can tell when it isn't spinning. When it does start spinning, that's when the Media options window pops up asking me what I want to do with the disk.

I google searched for how to play dvds on ubuntu, and a site says basically "just install Totem" and the dvdlib3 (it already has dvdlib4 installed) so I went ahead and installed totem.I launched totem, but there is no option for opening a DVD, there's only Open File. which would mean I'd have to open the vob files, which are very confusing to navigate.
I tried VLC and VLC couldn't run it, so I tried VLC(Windows32 under Wine) and although it worked in the past, it couldn't read the movie either(the movie is Casino Royale and I watched it just fine on my Windows machineis there an easy method to just install some proprietary software that can play movies with a single click? like with the package manager perhaps? I couldn't figure anything out. It seems like Ubuntu should come pre-ready for DVDs and I don't understand why it isn't.
I finally got K9copy to work and I'm using it to extract DVDs to my hard drive. I extract a dual layer DVDs it becomes a 5GB DVD. In the settings, I have DVD size as 9GB because I assumed this would not cause any compression. When I use k9copy assistant to change the shrink factor before ripping, I can only change the shrink factor of some titles to 1.67 from 2.50. I want the shrink factor to be 1 since this seems to ensure that the output of the file is the same size as the title on the dvd. I want the copied DVD to be the same size as the original. I have no problem with hard drive space since I have 6 terrabytes of free space.

Is it possible that when I compile ffmpeg under Ubuntu, the version I see in Windows looks that different?
This is the first time I tried playing a VCD on my laptop and when I tried playing it on VLC, it indicated that an error, that it cannot read the file. I searched around the net for some solution and tried opening the VCD through the terminal to no avail. I tried switching to the Movie Player but it's the same. They play the initial 'Warning on illegal copying of the film, etc.' which lasts for about 15 seconds but after that, it won't play at all.

One day, from the Login Screen itself, I selected the Power icon at the bottom right and selected Shut Down. But, from next boot, the login drum sound wouldnt play and even the african sound that comes after logging in wouldn't play. The african sound problem was solved when I noticed that my sound was muted by the GDM on shutdown. However, the drum sound still does not come. I think the solution it to change the volume before logging in.

I'm currently running ubuntu 9.04. I'm able to mount data and MP3 audio CDs but I'm unable to mount and play regular audio CDs. When I try to mount it I get the following message:
Unable to mount Audio Disc Drive /dev/sr0 does not contain audio files.
Windows does not have any problems playing either the regular audio CDs or audio MP3 CDs.
I've tried to look up different programs for this but can't find anything. I'd like to be able to open my recorder on Myspace for instance and capture any sound playing through my speakers. I used to have a little program for this, but its windows based and won't seem to install correctly in Wine.

I have mediatomb i turn my ps3 on search for server pick it up I can play all of my .avi files fine but when i go into audio > All audio it just says there are no titles so that the mp3 files show up and i can play them. And as well why does mediatomb not work when the terminal is not open. I open terminal type mediatomb then when i close it says disconnected from media server.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

I've installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package however I do not get any sound while playing mp3s. The sound system is working as I get the kde tune when I start up. I have tried playing mp3s in amarok, audacious, kaffeine and vlc. None of them work.
I opened system settings -> multimedia. It shows four devices and only the one which says 'ALC883(analog)' works in all categories (notifications, music, video, etc etc) when I click test. However sometimes I get a notification saying that the device doesn't work.
Another thing I noticed was that the mp3s play when Dolphin shows a preview of the file when it is selected. I mean that there is a preview part in the right hand part of the window. When I press play there, the mp3s play. But there is no sound when I play movies and mp3s in amarok, audacious, vlc or kaffeine
The motherboard I'm using is Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. Its an nForce 430 motherboard with integrated graphics and sound.
I recently downloaded a movie and it was in XVID format. When i tried to play it with vlc it played a small message that you need an xvid player that needs to be downloaded from a particular website... Then I tried to search for the missing plugins and i even found some and downloaded and installed but it did not work . the file which i downloaded was a 600 mb. then i switched to windows to play the file and it automatically opened the website and asked to purchase the xvid player.I even ttried to convert it to avi or mp4 format using avidemux but did not work.

I am trying to burn a video DVD created from "Devede" with K3B. The video DVD successfully burns, and plays in my computer, but does not play in any of the DVD players in the house. I used to user "ConvertXToDVD" when I was on Windows, but am trying to find a free/open source alternative on ubuntu. I am using all default options. I have looked in the settings for both programs, and I fail to see the problem here. Even the ISO created from devede seems to match up to the Video DVD (that works in the players) I had burned with ConvertXToDVD.
In Devede I have it so that the menu is disabled and it automatically plays the first title. Apparently this is not good enough.. I thought this program was supposed to be easy to use? What am I doing wrong here? I am using the same DVD-R I have used before on my Windows machine to great success. I am getting frustrated as I have went through 2 DVDs,
