Oct 7, 2010How do I set VLC as the default DVD player in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?There seems to be no obvious way to change in which player the DVD's open up in - you can only choose the default media player, but this is not what I want to do.I would like VLC as a default for DVD viewing only - I use Totem for other video files. I used Kaffeine for a while to play DVD's, but found VLC to be superior, especially in DVD menu support.
I know there are threads about how this is done in previous versions (like in 8.04 and so on), but I'm not sure if those still apply for 10.04? Through gconf-editor
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Use The Default, Create A New Profile
Jan 18, 2010I was reading some threads this morning and saw mention of the envy script. I wondered if it would make a big difference in graphics (nothing was wrong just curious is all) and downloaded the script. I ran it and there was only one listing for an ATI driver. I installed it and upon reboot I a notification pops up in place of my desktop. It says something about having to use low-res. The thing is it won't even use low-res. I get a box with three choices on it. Use the default, create a new profile, ***something else I forget*** and none of these logs me into desktop.
I blindly checked through some of the boxes and saw some logs. I'm using my dual-boot to type this message. This is on my R51e that has an ATI X200M card. What do I do?
EDIT: So upon reading some threads it seems I will most likely have to reinstall the OS? Am I allowed to throw a temper tantrum here???
I implore anyone who knows how to remove that 8.66***some other numbers*** driver and go back to the default one! I don't think I'll be mucking around with these types of things again!

Oct 3, 2010I'm using VLC in ubuntu 10.10. May problem began when I DL and changed the skin of my VLC media player. After installing the new skin, the gui doesn't work. I can't open the preferences and change the skin settings from there.
I've tried removing and re-installing VLC but, when I install it, it remembers the old skin on which I got that problem. I've tried deleting the vlc files in "/var/cache/apt/archives" and "/var/lib/dpkg/info" but, it still remembers the previous setting on which I got the this problem.

Apr 25, 2011When I go into Sound Preferences I can crank up the output volume above 100%, making it audible from my monitor's built in speakers.
(this is for a kiosk that doesn't have room for extra powered speakers) Every time I reboot it resets output volume to 100%. Is there a way to change the volume back to 125% or whatever max is so the general public can hear the video that is played after a reboot? (this is to be a permanent installation that won't even have a keyboard or mouse attached, so automating this is a must)
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Default Microphone Won't Stay?
Jun 17, 2011I'm having a lot of trouble getting the default microphone to stay as the webcam microphone in 10.04 LTS. What happened at first is that there was the motherboard microphone and the webcam mic - despite selecting it, once the computer went to sleep or was switched off, it would return to motherboard input (i.e. no input). So, I wrote a script that would change it back to the webcam each time the computer started. It didn't work so well, and eventually I found I could just disable the motherboard input entirely, which I did. Now, my only option for input is the webcam, but everytime the computer sleeps, it wakes up with it unchecked - as though it would rather have no input than the webcam.
Motherboard is an M4A88T-M/USB-3, 500GB Seagate HDD, 3.2GHz AMDx2.

Apr 26, 2010I've tried everything first I tried with Preferences/Preferred Applications - no result. then File Type Manager from Ubuntu Tweek - nothing... I tried with a few older Exaile versions (from various repo's) - nothing... compiling 0.3.1.1 from source - still nothing. with these I can set every other player to be default player (so, only Exaile refuses to obey). to be more exact, after setting Exaile as default, double-click on any audio file associated with it results with temporary CPU usage increase and than NOTHING :S just don't tell me to use VLC, Audacious, Rhythmbox, Amarok, QL or any other player... I used them all but I NEED Exaile (and not just because it looks beautiful enough with Ambiance to make me completely forget foobar2k... and because it's sooo stubborn ).

May 21, 2010After upgrading from karmic to lucid I can't change a default refresh rate for my crt monitor connected to my laptop (lcd switched off). I know radeon driver is trying to check what's the highest possible rate and sets it around 85, but the screen starts to "shiver". If I manualy change this setting in system settings for the screen to 75, it is ok. But I have to do this after every boot I generated xorg.conf and the appropriate modeline (it shows in the screen settings), and I added it to both monitor and screen section. Nevertheless the refresh rate is set to auto again in system settings and the screen wiggles a bit. How to disable automatic detection and force my own settings?

Jun 17, 2010When Lucid Lynx came out I did a clean install on my laptop by burning an iso. Unfortunately, I got an annoying bug in which the image would always be wiggly (wavy) in the external monitor. In an attempt to fix the issue, I tried to installed Ati's restricted drivers. Unfortunately, my graphics card (Radeon x1200) isn't supported by them on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install it anyway only made things worse.
Right now, I just want it to be back to what it was when I first installed Lucid. Following the instructions on this page, I have already removed the fglrx drivers, and I think I installed the open-source driver. However, I can tell that things are not the way they were when I first installed. By going in "Main menu > System > Preferences > Monitors" I get the usual menu to configure the monitors, except I can't actually configure anything.
There's only one monitor (listed as Unknown), and the system doesn't let me change any of the settings (such as resolution or frequency). The external monitor is showing the same output as the laptop monitor, and doesn't get recognized by the system. I just want to use the exact graphics drivers that came installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But I don't want to do a clean install.

In alsamixer, the speakers volume is set to zero and I can't hear anything (headphones work properly, though). I turn it up and the speakers work, but each time I reboot it goes back to zero. I've gone through the alsa wiki without finding anything. Can someone tell me how to change the default values in alsamixer so speakers work on start?

Is it the midi sequencer? or midi driver?Regardless, I'm unhappy with the tones ubuntu produces for its drum midis. Does any one know how to change which tones it uses? I use lilypond to write percussion music and it can be easily translated into a midi file. I like to do this so that I can hear how the music sounds in real life and many mistakes.Unfortunately the toms are painfully low and hard to distinguish.

Oct 25, 2010Since I installed the system-wide equalizer I've been having some problems with my sound system. The problem is it has changed some system settings (visible in gconf) and after I uninstall it, I can't change any sound settings, except the volume in a given application, but the system-wide volume doesn't work, even the tray icon shows three dashes next to the little speaker and the sound settings won't start. I'd like to revert the settings to the original after removing the equalizer, as at this moment I can't change any settings even with the equalizer enabled. Is there any way to reset the sound settings
(I suppose it must be in gconf, but I don't know what the values should be. Currently the musicaudiosink settings are: audioresample ! audioamplify amplification=0 ! pulsesinkv)
Those are the settings that definitely changed after installing the equalizer, but they obviously won't change back after uninstalling it.

Dec 6, 2010the dialog for "open with other application" is broken in that you cannot use 'remember this application for "AVI Video" files'. they always open with Totem. while totem is very capable, it lags at times and sometimes loses the stream if the lag is too long, while smplayer is not as finicky. besides, smplayer has more options that i require.i wish dearly to be able to double click an avi/mkv/etc video file and have it open in smplayer. are there instructions somewhere to do this? i have searched extensively, but there are too many threads that are similar that don't answer my question.

May 3, 2011So I did the update to Natty and it went pretty smoothly, with one exception. My rig has two sound cards in it: the integrated motherboard sound card (Intel HDA audio) that I don't use, and a Sound Blaster Audigy (the original Audigy 1) that I do use.
This setup has worked fine in Ubuntu for as long as I can remember, but after the upgrade to Natty it appears that GNOME no longer knows that the Audigy is the card that's in use. It insists on routing things like volume changes via gnome-volume-control to the motherboard. I can confirm this by watching the volume levels for each card in alsamixer while modifying them in gnome-volume-control; the levels move appropriately on the integrated card, and stay stuck on the Audigy.
What makes this bizarre is that it's not that the Audigy isn't recognized -- it's shown in the "Hardware" tab of Sound Preferences, and the system plays back audio just fine through the speakers connected to the Audigy. It's just that I can't change the volume on the sound through the panel applet anymore. Normally I would fix something like this by using the Hardware tab to switch from the one card to the other, but in this case when I make that change it doesn't stick -- if I close the Sound Preferences and then open it again, it's right back to being set to the integrated audio.
Maybe this is a PulseAudio issue with older Audigy cards? I have no idea.
I can change the volume with my speakers' volume knob and my keyboard's media keys, I suppose, but I'm so used to be able to change it via gnome-volume-control that not being able to feels bizarre. Has anyone else out there with add-on sound cards installed alongside motherboard audio experienced this?

May 9, 2011I am trying to set my default media player as MPlayer and selecting it with a right click in the menu, open with and then telling it to open with every time. It then opens it in MPlayer that time no problem but then next time I just double click on the file (or any file with same type) it just opens it with the original default player. I've tried using SMplayer as well as default and it does the same thing. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.

Will 0x80 always be the default? Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm going to be playing these discs on a DVD Player without a remote (can't help it), so I won't be able to switch the audio on the fly, and they have no menus. You put it in, and it goes straight to the movie.
