View 14 Replies View RelatedIf I start skipping through a movie or song that's playing, sometimes the program will totally freeze. It stops playing audio and video altogether. Similarly, if for instance I'm listening to a music playlist, often times when VLC skips to the next track it stops playing audio, but continues through the track like it's still playing. Once it reaches the end of the first track it had a problem with, it freezes altogether and I have to close the program. In fact, the program stays running even after I "x" out of it, and I have to kill the process in system monitor and restart VLC in order to restore functionality. This happens quite often (as in, a few times a day), and as I'm sure you can imagine, this gets quite annoying, lol.
I've looked in the various logs in Log Viewer, but I don't see any obvious problems. There are no error messages pertaining to VLC, or audio or video output so far as I can tell. I've also tried reinstalling VLC to no avail. I think the next thing I'll try is to remove it completely first, and then reinstall it....but if that doesn't work, is there anything else you guys think I should be looking at? Lucid is the first Ubuntu release that's worked well for me (9.04 and 9.10 had serious issues on my machine) so I'd like not to revert back to an older release just for VLC if at all possible.
I'm trying out 10.04 LTS 64-bit from the live CD and when I try to play a MP3 or WAV file it gets the usual Search for suitable plugin? "The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that supports the selected file? The search will also include software which is not officially supported." Error message so I click Search and it comes up with the error No packages with the requested plugins found.
Is this because it is in Live Mode and installing 10.04 to my hard drive will fix it or does Ubuntu no longer support audio files other then ogg and other open source audio / video file formats due to copyright problems?

I have ripped quite a few movies onto my server and I play them on my PS3 with mediatomb. I haven't changed any of the settings in handbrake except I was playing around with the quality meter on the video tab. Some of my movies will play and others won't. The ones that do not play say something about an unsupported file type. They also will not play in Movie Player.

I changed my apache config to use MY account as the web user, and it does in fact work the way I want it to.
Obviously, I dont want to leave apache running as me, and want it to keep using www-data.... heres my question... how can I give permission for www-data to execute certain programs?
I'm having trouble playing back videos from a DLNA device in Ubuntu 11.04, and I'm not sure where the problem lies.
Using the software manager I've installed the extra plugins package for Totem, and enabled the Coherence DLNA/UPNP plugin. I can see the device (Humax Freeview HD recorder) in the MediaServers list, and can browse through the programmes I've recorded on it. However, trying to play any of the has no effect, the main part of the window still shows the "clapperboard" graphic.
I noticed that the "recent files" filenames that were appearing on the Movie menu didn't match the ones that were listed in the sidebar - they're of the form e.g. 313.TS rather than the original descriptive name with a .ts extension. Running Totem from a shell prompt, I can see the following console output: request to play: Man on Earth_20110622_0508.ts 013311314 http://192.168.254.1:9000/web/media/313.TS I tried entering that URL into Firefox, and it started downloading okay; according to the LiveHTTPHeaders addon the response headers are

Why can't Totem play the file? Some other codec needed for video/ts files that I've not got installed? (it hasn't prompted me to install any extra packages) Does it just not like the fact the file extension is upper case? Or something else entirely?
On a separate machine, also running Ubuntu 11.04, I installed the VideoLan client; VLC can browse to the files and play them without any problem. So why can't Totem?

Programs like matlab/octave and I'm sure many other ones allow you to start typing a command, and then hit Up to recall the last command that starts with the typed characters.
