Ubuntu :: Play MP3 And WAV File Plugins - Required Software To Play File Not Installed
May 6, 2010
I'm trying out 10.04 LTS 64-bit from the live CD and when I try to play a MP3 or WAV file it gets the usual Search for suitable plugin? "The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that supports the selected file? The search will also include software which is not officially supported." Error message so I click Search and it comes up with the error No packages with the requested plugins found.
Is this because it is in Live Mode and installing 10.04 to my hard drive will fix it or does Ubuntu no longer support audio files other then ogg and other open source audio / video file formats due to copyright problems?
I downloaded the xvid codec from: PackMan:: Informationen zum Paket xvidcore, and the install was successful.I'm trying to play an xvid file, and Kaffeine is saying it cannot play all file formats, would I like to install additional support. When I click yes, it asks me for additional repositories.
I'm having trouble playing mp3 and video files on ubuntu, despite the fact I have downladed packages that include gstreamer ffmpeg video plugin,gstreamer extra plugins, and ubuntu restricted extras(plus some additional gstreamers).
The problem occurs with both mp3 and video files.Mp3 files are played only by my VLC player, but with a terrible stutter.The other players give visual indication that they are playing the file, but no music is heard.When I play video files, the picture is displayed, but also stutters at all players and no sound is heard.
You may know the Humble Indie Pack 2, which is a set of crossplatform indie video games. There's one game in the bundle that doesn't offer a 64bit build and therefore it fails to load. It's called Braid and that's what you get when you try to run it: $ ./braid ./braid: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Of course the 64bit libs for OpenGL and the propitiatory nvidia drivers are installed, but the game asks for the 32bit ones, at least to my understanding. I do know that why can install 32bit libraries on a 64 bit linux system (we do that for the sake of crappy Adobe Flash), but I don't know where to find these libs (searching the repo with keywords like .i586 or ia32 led me nowhere).
I'm just starting to get a feel for it, and learning about the software. I can't get m4a files to play in Rhythmbox - it says it needs additional plugins, but I don't know where to find them. suggest a link for an m4a decoder plugin, or different software that can play m4a files?
My DVD will not play DVD's. I can only play cd's/music. The drop down box tells me that an additional plugin is required to play the dvd content and do I want to search for this now. Naturally I said yes. The next drop down box says that search could not find plugin in any configured software source. I have been to www.liba52.sourceforge.net and found ; a52dec-0.7.4.tar.gz I'm not too confident about using this, but have it in my 'home' file on the desktop. If anyone thinks it is ok, how to install it. If its not ok, can you tell me how I can obtain the appropriate plugin. I have Fedora 10 installed. The DVD is a Pioneer 104.
I would like to play a sound file whenever someone moves their mouse/pointer over an image. All my feeble attempts have so far failed. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 + Firefox and Konqueror.
When trying to play videothe extension .vob,the following message :pa_stream_writable_size () failed. Connection terminated. I tried to follow the tread associated with that error message with little luck. Following that thread led to the following command:sudo pulseaudio --killWhen I executed that command I got the following:E: core-util.c: Home diectory home/username not oursE:main.c: failed tokill daemon: permission denied
I have this .wmv video I'm trying to play in movie player, but I get this error:
Code: video/x-asf-unknown decoder and then it plays just the audio. When I try vlc, it just says Code: VLC does not support the audio or video format "G2M4" I have installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras and w32codecs as instructed here How do I fix this problem? I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit
When I try to play any type of media file, It plays but can't fast forward or rewind plus there's no sound. I.e Avi , Mpg , Flash or anything, I can't even download the bad plugins because it says that there's a conflic with another repo that I've got installed. the only repos that I've got installed are the Main fedora one's , RPM fusion & adobe, so how do I installed the codecs to play anything proper on Fedora 11 cheers
I set all levels in the mixer in the 'green' area. I even rebooted (which I didn't expect to be necessary anyway). When I play a video, no sound. When I play an mp3 file I get a Couldn't-open-audio pop up message: Please check that soundcard is properly configured, proper plugin, no other program blocking the soundcard.
I tried to play a music file w/ rhythmbox, but it needed a plug-in. When I searched for it, there was none to be found. I need to know how to install plug-ins in order to play my mp3's and movies.
I am using Kubuntu 10.04 When I play any media file, I am not able to hear any sound. A few weeks ago, except DragonPlayer and Amarok no other app on my system was able to play sound(vlc etc.). A few days ago, even they stopped working and I saw a message related to Phonon and HDA Intel card of my system that it is not working properly. I also have dual boot with winXP and it sound play very well on it. Searching the net, I have tried these:
When I play any video/audio file in ubuntu i get the error"An error ocurred.The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-4 AAC decoder plugin which is not installed.The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."I have'nt installed any audio video player software.. i was playing the file with the default inbuilt player.
There is a video file with .DAT extension.How can I play such files via VLC or SmPlayer?Which codecs does it need?Following packages are already installed :
fedora 12 64bittotem movie playeri have *.flv files download on internet with "download videos videos + 2.1.3" and/or "downloadhelper 4.7"totem fails to play them. warning;

I would like to know how I can play a midi file in Slackware command line. I write "aplaymidi -p (port number) file.mid" and I see that it is working, but I can't hear anything. As I have Windows XP in a computer and Windows 7 in another, I have to convert the midi files into wave files in order to listen to them in Slackware using play. There is another thing that I haven't ever been able to do in spite of the fact that I have had Slackware installed in my computers since 2002, and this thing is: I have never been able to connect Internet using Slackware or any other Linux distribuition. I like Linux very much but I am frustrated at not being able to do these two things: to play a midi file in Slackware and to connect Internet.
I tried to use Totem and Rhythmbox to play an mp3 file but it fails because of a missing decoder. I have found a solution that solve the problem through a repository. Unfortunately, the PC I'm using doesn't have internet connection so I'm looking for another approach. I couldn't find any rpm that would work for CentOS 5.5 I could copy the my Linux system?
I am trying to watch a video file on a Centos 5.6 Linux. The file does not open. It says "Totem could not play 'file:///root/Desktop/LinuxCBT/Disk1/video01/video01.wmv'. A Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) demuxer plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed." I thought maybe Totem is not capable to play this so i went ahead and installed mplayer on the system (yum install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts. I also downloaded this all-20110131.tar.bz2 from this site [URL]. I created a folder called codecs in /usr/local/lib/codecs. I uncompressed the content of all-20110131.tar.bz2 and put them in the codecs folder. I went to folder /usr/local/lib/codecs and did chmod 755 *. I can now hear the sound but no video. when I write gmplayer -ov x11 at the terminal command prompt the mplayer opens, when I open the video file, I can hear the sound but no video. Basically my question is how can I see a video file on Linux? Have I missed something? Did I download wrong files? If I revert and try to open this with Totem, where do I get the necessary plugins for Totem?
Here is the output;
[root@localhost codecs]# gmplayer -vo x11 MPlayer SVN-r31628-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team mplayer: could not connect to socket mplayer: No such file or directory
