I have a webcam that periodically gets dumped and I have to unplug and plug back in to get it to work again. I think it has to do with somethign about how the webcam is USB 2.0 but my PC is USB 1.0, even though it says it is USB 2.0. In Windows it would also dump it but then it would automatically remount it.
i have sony viao vgn-fz11 Can someone please help ,im new user to ubuntu been trying to get webcam working properly at the moment its upside down and does not work in skype at all just get black screen does this look correct? do i have the right driver?i will try and give as much information as i can.
I have a problem making work a webcam. At the begining, after the instalation of 10.04 in a new laptop, the webcam did not work but with a lsusb I see that the webcam was Webcam 5986:0241 acer. I was not able to config neither use the webcam with any application. After lots of test and forums reading I could not do my webcam to work, and now when I do a lsusb my webcam does not appear.
I've bought an used computer with DQ965GF motherboard which includes GMA3000 integrated video, Sigmatel 92XX (from what specs say) audio codec, and CoreDuo processor. Also 1 GB DDR2 RAM.It worked great when I tested it using live Ubuntu 10.04, Compiz worked out-of-the-box, etc.But when I installed and started playing movies, I found problems. Videos pauses from time to time, approx. once a minute (randomly), even when there's no other activity. They pause for a very short moment, half a second maybe, with audio, then resume, usually with 1-2 secs period of slowed down playback (like, trying to get up to speed and sync), then resume normally.
I tested with mplayer and totem, seems to be the same, though on mplayer the effect seems to be less frequent / shorter delays. Can this be video driver? Audio driver? Motherboard issues? BIOS settings? How do I test? The videos that I play are usual DivX AVIs, can't be speed problems. Also, when I replay the paused parts, they do not pause again, so these are probably not movie/hard drive errors.
I have a custom .Xmodmap file to change the keyboard layout. The problem is that sometimes the keyboard layout changes back to the default. I have seen the lights on the keyboard blink at times, so I tried unplugging and reconnecting the keyboard and yes - that reset the layout. I can see keyboard removed/detected entries in the logs as well, so I guess my keyboard reconnects sometimes, I don't know why. However the solution from the post earlier (to rename the xmodmap file to ~/.Xmodmap) did not work. So is there another default filename I should use? Or do I have to enable xmodmap to run when a keyboard is plugged in somehow?
The only thing I can think of right now is to monitor /var/log/Xorg.0.log for "Adding input device USB Keyboard" and running xmodmap when that happens... but I'm really hoping for a better solution. If I can't fix the xmodmap problem, maybe I can fix the usb disconnects.I read something about power saving settings for usb. After some digging, I found that those settings are in /sys/bus/usb/devices/.../power/. However, disabling autosuspend for the hub did not seem to work (it was already disabled for the keyboard).
But I found something else in kern.log. Perhaps the keyboard disconnects has something to do with static electricity?

I have used Dump Command to dump the application files. For Full backup the level 0 is working fine. For incremental backup I used the level 1 or 2 it is getting the error as

I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured. However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something? My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)
Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.
Doing this: mplayer dvd://1 -v -dumpstream -dumpfile dump.vob Gives me all the audio tracks, but not the subtitles. How can I go about getting the subtitles to be included in the file dump.vob? I've tried something like: mplayer dvd://1 -v -sid 5 -dumpstream -dumpfile dump.vob (where -sid 5 was the correct subtitle) but this does not work. I'm going to use mencoder to make an .avi file (with subtiutles, obviously), so I could, as a last resort, use some other program that extracts the subtitles (suggestions?).
I have a budget of around $150AUD or ~$126USD - what would you recommend as being the best webcam for that budget that is fully compliant with Ubuntu 10.04 64bit?
I'm only looking to skype and do some basic video tutorials,
I am a recent convert to Ubuntu 10.10 from Vista. I work from home and do all of my work via remote login and video conferencing through Skype. In Vista, I could use my DV Camcorder as a webcam which, in turn, gave me video for Skype. In Vista, I used a program call "Tracker Cam" which I could run, and then it would act like a video driver for Skype and presto, I had perfect video in Skype.
Now that I am in Ubuntu, I am trying to achieve the same thing. I can hook up my DV Camcorder (A Sony Handycam HDR-HC5) and see the live video through Kino. However, this doesn't help me with Skype. I still can't enable video, or select a video device in Skype. I have Googled this up and down with no leads.
So, I am wondering if anyone has done this with Skype (or other programs) to get their DV Camcorders acting like webcams for video calls or is this just one of those things that won't work in Ubuntu?
i have been using a webcam on my netbook in ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. it seems to not detect the camera after a while and i have to reboot to get it to work again. is there anyway that i can restart the driver or something without rebooting the netbook?
purchased a webcam to record videos with in Ubuntu. I plugged it into the USB slot (and audio into the mic hole) and it seems to work ok. But I'd like to record a video from it and save it to a file. How can this be done?I tried Cheese and no audio was recorded.I tried GUVCView and it was fine except for slow video & audio delay.I can't find any other programs for recording webcams on Linux.
How do I install a webcam? I have an usb Logitech Quickcam The program Cheese looks for a camera in "/dev/video0" but it is greyed-out
"lsusb" shows the following:

How do I install the webcam so that it is recognized by programs? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome 2.30.0
I'm using Wubi to dual boot 9.10 off windows xp. I have been having very good luck figuring things out using this ubuntu forum, which I am more grateful for than any of you could ever imagine, But I have a webcam issue I just can't figure out. Heres my question. I just recently bought a VERY cheap usb webcam from a company named HDE. There doesn't seem to be a specific name or even model number for this webcam, but here is the web page of the webcam I bought, http://www.hdeshop.com/USB-3-LED-PC-...B0015TJNEY.htm The website only provides drivers for windows vista and windows xp, but I figured there might be a chance or possibility that I could force this webcam to work on ubuntu 9.10. I plugged in the webcam and it did show up in skype, but the picture is all green and there is a double of me.
Plus, the actual webcam device will not show up in skype, I can't select the webcam, but regardless it still shows a green double vision image when I test it or do a video call.Skype seems to be the only thing this webcam kind of works with, It will not work with Cheese though and doesn't show an image in gstreamer. I want to mention that when I go to Cheese Preferences there is a webcam device that appears and sayse "USB 2.0 Camera (/dev/video0)" but I can't select it. I'm not sure what to do about this or how to fix it? I've searched around the internet and read the ubuntu documentation on webcams but really haven't had any luck for my specific webcam. I would just like the webcam to be detected by ubuntu 9.10, to work properly in skype, and work in cheese so I can record video's.

I'm a proud user of ubuntu 9.10 and have used it pretty much..
i have found this great alternative to msn messenger.. which i called emesene .1.6
but my webcam isn't working.. it do in Amsn, but im not satisfied with that program.. what happens? when i click the show webcam icon, and the other user accepts.. a black box is coming up, and nothing happens from here,, i have libmimic installed but still not function...
Cheese Webcam Booth used to work fine but now it just closes after I open it, Facebook wont load my webcam (but other websites can, and I wanna take a picture. I'm using a Logitech Webcam. I don't know what kind because it doesn't say anywhere on the stupid thing, but it has a spinny thing (to adjust the focus I think) that says "Right Sound" on it, and it also has a microphone.
Using Ubuntu 10.10 1. My old webcam A4 tech model PK-365M used to work in ubuntu 10.4 all I had to do was make a script that LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype however that won't work now in 10.10
I installed skype and can't seem to use the webcam upon further investigation I have actually yet to find instructions on how to use my webcam on linux; i have a Creative VF 0080
i tried gstreamer-properties when changing plugin from Linux 2(v4l2) or (v4l) i get this error
Code: Video for Linux (v4l): Device "/dev/video0" does not exist.
I'm aware that this is a common issue - I've spent "some time" googling. But I think my fault is not the common one. I'm trying to set up my old-ish laptop as a Linux astronomy box. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my FujitsuSiemens AmiloPro V2000.
I have to run this page: [URL].., because it fetches the content of some feeds(RSS) and then inserts into Database and then sends SMS texts to subscribed users. when i run it with php-cli in bash like this: php feeds.php?u=y&d=y
I only get: [4] 11719
but nothing happens, running it like this: black@loopserver:/var/www/loop/cp$ php 'feeds.php?u=y&d=y' Could not open input file: feeds.php?u=y&d=y
Can any one please tell me what to do? I think the problem is coming by passing get parameters, if i just run feeds.php everything goes fine, but I need to pass in those.
I want to use a script to renew my IP every 5 minutes. I have a static IP and it seems that when another person enter the same IP address as mine, my IP is stolen and is assigned to him.
I know that Cron is responsible for running a script at some time interval. How can I use that to renew my IP?
I have a webcam (Trust 16430 [Chat Webcam]) that just doesn't seem to work. Now according to multple guides I simply have to install easycam2 to find the drivers and install the cam. There lies another problem, easycam2 is giving me a hard time... it just won't install.
Now here is what I do in the terminal:
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
So then I try:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop with a built-in webcam. I installed Cheese months ago and it worked fine then -- pics, videos, the works.
Now, after some updates recommended by Canonical, Cheese is telling me that it can't find the webcam. I tried dumping it an reinstalling, but to no avail.
Anyone out there know what's going on? Did the updates knock out a hardware driver?
Ubuntu, in its most recent version (9.10) has stopped to support certain webcams that it previously supported with just plug-and-play simplicity. After many searches on the web, I could somehow managed to make my old webcam (Logitech QuickCam Traveler) work. Skype couldn't see it, but adding the command bash -c 'export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so; skype' to the launcher, worked the miracle.
Whatever, the image was very dark, and in a new web search I found a solution [url] As stated there, I opened the Terminal and entered:
Code:
All is OK, brightness gets up, I can finally see my face (not a great view, but I somehow got away with it) in Skype's test, but I need that change to be PERMANENT, so every time my parents open Skype (it's my parents' computer) they won't have to mess with Terminal (they're 69 and 72 years old, it's their first computer, so I CAN NOT expect them to use Terminal, they just want to open Skype and use it, as they did when they used Windows (until two weeks ago, when I finally convinced them to switch).
