May 25, 2010I would like to ask you the following: Is it possible when I plug in my usb speakers to have the sound redirected directly to them (as it happens also in windows?)
I have some USb external speakers that work fine with Linux. I have configured them with priority 1 and I also have configured my soundcard with priority 2.
So when the speakers are plugged in in advance (Before os boots) I can only listen music through my usb speakers.
When my usb speakers are unplugged and system reboots afterwards I could only listen music from the internal speakers (soundcard).
But things dont work dynamically if I just plug my usb speakers while music is playing the sound is not getting redirected. So I have to restart alsasound which is a little bit annoying.

Mar 9, 2011I want to redirect the output of a command to a file, but not at the end of the file, but after a line. Do you know how can I do it?
Something like:
cat file_a | grep some_text >> resulting_file
# in this file I need to place the output from grep, but not at the bottom of resulting_file, like it would normally happen, but after line .. 3 , for example
Then, if file_a is:
abc x
some_text q
zxc w

Ubuntu :: No Sound On Line-out Speakers Work
May 19, 2010I just bought a new Dell Studio 15. It's not such an easy ride with Lucid apparently, the broadcom wireless driver sometimes fails, and there is no sign of any bluetooth on ubuntu.But the main annoyance at the moment is that no sound is coming through the line-out.
When I plug my headphones in, the speakers go silent as they are supposed to do. But I can't hear anything in my headphone. I do have two headphone-line-outs on this laptop, but it's the same effect on both.Does anyone have an idea? I searched the forum, tried installing gnome alsa mixer, but everything seems to be unmuted.

Jan 29, 2010i'm running fedora 12 on a dell dimension 4600. audio seems to work reasonably well for things like flash animation but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to route line-in audio through the system for output to my external speakers. on the sound preferences application on the gnome desktop: if i select the hardware tab and analog stereo input is selected, then i go to the input tab and have analog line-in selected, i see the v-u meter above moving around as though there is actually an input. [list]
but, i hear no sound. the output tab shows "dummy output" with no other choices. to get audio working for videos and other flash sites, i have to change to hardware->analog surround 5.0 output. such documentation as i have been able to find doesn't seem to describe my setup well, and in any case, i find all this fidgeting with hardware configurations an immense step back from the old alsa software. if this is going to be the future of linux audio, can i say, please, no?

Jan 5, 2011I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

Jun 17, 2011I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.

May 20, 2011I would like to redirect pulseaudio sound through ssh to a local client while seeing content through a vnc connection. Something like this:
Client: ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 user@server.net
Client: vncviewer localhost:5901
Server: Run a web browser with flash content on the server through vnc, but sound is redirected to the client.
A good example is Facebook flash games, most flash games require flash player 10 but my local client only supports up to version 9 because of the architechture.
Why? A number of reasons:
- The local client is not powerful enough to run flash content
- The local client has an architechture that flash does not support, eg ARM, PowerPC, etc.
- Save battery power - use the resources of a server instead of the client.
Environment:
Both the client and server have pulse audio installed and working. The server does not have a physical sound card installed but the client does.
Server: Ubuntu 10.04
Client: Ubuntu 10.10

Feb 17, 2010I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my buddy's laptop. It's working alright, except when we try to plug the external computer speakers into the sound jack in the front, there is no change; it keeps playing through the onboard speakers. My friend and I are getting pretty frustrated because we use those speakers to watch movies with, and the onboard speakers aren't sufficient. If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.

Oct 20, 2010Before I upgraded to 10.10, I would hear sound on both my PC speakers and on my TV. The speakers are connected via the standard speaker out, the TV was connected via the line-out, through a stereo to RCA adapter. Video is supplied to the TV via HDMI. Now that I've upgraded to Maverick, however, I no longer get sound on the TV. This isn't the usual "sound stopped working completely on upgrade" issue, because I get flawless sound via the PC speakers just as before. I've tried most of the debugging steps recommended in other threads about audio, with no improvement.
The weird thing about all this is, when I plug other speakers or headphones into the same port, I hear audio. So I'm starting to suspect that the problem has to do with the HDMI audio out capability on my video card (an nvidia GT 240), which might have suddenly come alive (if not fully functional) with Maverick's new version of ALSA. I don't know what signal(s) my TV thinks it's getting and have no way of troubleshooting things on that side, but it seems possible that the HDMI it's getting video through is also sending a null/silent audio stream, and that stomps the analog audio signal it's getting from my sound card.
I see two output devices in Sound Preferences, "Internal Audio" and "High Definition Audio Controller". "Internal Audio", ie my onboard sound, is what's producing audio via the speakers. HDMI has never produced any audio, and I don't really need it to if I can just make it work the way it did before. I've tried completely disabling that device, even adding the "snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi" module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist - no change.
The solution for this could be one of two things: one, I could try to get the HDMI audio out working and let that be what my TV receives, two I try to make the audio setup work as before, with analog audio going to both speakers and TV. Thoughts? I'm leaning towards the latter, ie not bothering with the HDMI audio, as having another audio source would probably mean messing with PulseAudio which has otherwise worked 100% fine for me up until now. If need be I can supply more details on hardware, CLI output etc.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Audio From Speakers?
Feb 10, 2011I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. The audio did not work prior to updating the system & software so it wasn't the updates. I have Bose Companion 2 Series 2 (Multimedia Speaker System) plugged in. When I was on Windows (I installed Ubuntu on top of it) they worked just fine. My headset (Microsoft LifeChat) work just fine. It is not muted nor are they on low volume.
If Bose Companion 2 require a proprietary driver how would I go about finding an alternative? I checked their website and all the software requires Windows NT+. I have tried reloading ALSA. I have installed Ubuntu Restricted Extras.

Mar 7, 2011i'm currently using ubuntu 10.04 with AsRock p55/pro motherboard (supports bluray audio). I've just hooked up my logitech x-530 5.1 surround sound speakers, but there's no sound. My headphones work fine via the front panel jack. I dont think i've forgotten to plug any cables/pins on the motherboard. I cant install the asrock bios either, because ubuntu can't open the files. I've tried rehooking everything, but nothing seems to work. Could it be that ive forgotten to attach some cables? or is it a program problem?

Jun 9, 2011My headset is doing a fine job, using the standard audio connections, but I'd like to be able to use speakers as well. Someone's given me a very basic "soundball" ‒ only visible identification, the word 'goobay' ‒ that's been doing well on another O/S. When I plug it in, it's on speaking terms with the USB port as far as drawing power goes: but doesn't play anything.
The options from Sound preferences don't include anything as obvious as "use USB port/ use audio connectors". Is there an easy answer?

Feb 5, 2010I have an HP-dc5800 computer, and my internal speaker was not working, no matter what i did. However, i could get sound with headphones. Here is what i did to fix it. It may work for you.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Add options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable_msi=1 to the end of the file. I changed model=hp-m4 to model=hp-dc5800. So, changing the model to the model of your computer may work. Jul 19, 2010I'm currently running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a Pentium 4. I'm currently using the LXDE desktop environment but the problem is the same in GNOME. I have new Altec-Lansing BX1220 speakers. They didn't come with a driver disk and a Google search didn't return any drivers, so they should be plug-and-play. When I plug them in, the light turns on, and with the volume high enough it returns feedback. However, they don't actually play what the computer is playing. I went into alsamixer and made sure all the volumes were turned up; it didn't help. It was plugged into my microphone jack.

Nov 8, 2010A bit of background: I have a single set of Logitech Z-5500s and a Xonar D2X on my main computer. I have one other system currently ( sometimes two ), set up in a loop using optical in/out. This system uses analog out to communicate to the Logitech Z-5500s and, when on Windows, feeds a high quality bluetooth headset's input out it's own optical out down the ring so that Dragon Naturally Speaking works on all the systems. ( Since you can't listen to music / play sound effects and use Dragon at the same time, I don't get an infinite loop / digital feedback effect which is REALLY neat to listen to sometime. )
It's a pretty complicated setup. My Windows 7 installation is down due to hard drive failure, so I fixed Grub up and hopped on to Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit edition. So! What I need to get my sound working again, sans the overcomplicated headset part, is a way for my Ubuntu system to play its digital input / SPDIF input on its analog output. Nothing more.
Googling gets me a bunch of stuff meant for music recording that often has high latency. I need this to be minimal latency and because my Ubuntu rig is meant as a CGI workstation and ONLY a CGI workstation installation, I need it to be something with minimal maintenance in updates and minimal resource usage.
