I've found VLC to be the most difficult to understand by far. I've followed many guides on installing different versions and want to now try VLC 0.9.9, as I've read there's a chance this version might work for what I'm trying to do. I've followed a couple of guides to installing 0.9.9 that were written for 8.04 but am getting errors.

The diagnosis of that problem was video ram going awol.
I have now purchased a gt220 1G card, plugged it in and as I expected, it only gave me a resolution of 800x600 or400x300, not good for the Flatron L225WS screen that is connected(only has a vga connection).
Looking for a driver and help with the installation, I found [url], with instructions which I tried following.
I ran update manager on the desktop, then followed the link to the nividea drivers at ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/190.42/ which gives several packages.
I had a quick read through the Read Me file, and clicked on the first package to download it, but (and I spotted the clue in the extension - ".run") instead of downloading, it gave me a cl type page.

I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.
I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!
This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason
I've just "changed" from Ubuntu Karmic to Linux Mint8 KDE 64Bit. I am trying to get the BBC Iplayer Desktop working. I have managed to install Adobe Air and thats it.

So I finally figured out that if you download the latest developer version, it is fast, stable, and hasnt crashed yet! View 3 Replies View Related just updated to lucid and i went to install medibuntu and following the instructions on this page [URL] just like i did in Karmic but after i have done everything that i had to do in Karmic to get it to work i tried to play a dvd in totem and it pops up and says
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially supported.
No packages with the requested plugins found
The requested plugins are: DVD subpicture decoder
I click ok and then the dvd starts to play and says internal data flow error
Yesterday, NVIDIA released a new set of drivers. For ubuntu 10.10, I downloaded 270.41.06. I havent been able to set it up on my fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10.
I have tried the following methods:
1. First changed the settings for updates to accept proposed updates. This is also suggested at [url]
Then installed the additional driver proposed by Ubuntu.
On restart, no login-screen. (Xserver fails to come up!)
2.Edited the repos by adding ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. Unfortunately 270.41.06 is not the latest driver available there - 270.41.03 is the current version. On adding this repo the driver is searched successfully by synaptic. Installing nvidia-current brings up the driver version to 270.41.03 without any issues.
Nvidia X Server Setting prompts to run the nvidia-xconfig. On doing so a new conf file is created.
On restart, the Ubuntu splash screen is not displayed. Again Xserver fails to start!
3. Finally, I tried installing the .run file provided on Nvidia's website. First, I dropped to a root shell. Then cd'ed to the location where .run file was saved. On running the .run file, the installer asks you to change the run-level to 3. On doing so by telinit 3, the driver starts installing. As soon as I accepted the terms and proceeded to the next screen, a warning was displayed saying the pre-install script had failed!
But the driver installation does proceed to completion.
Even this method failed. The Xserver still does not start. No splash screen.
Currently I am running the system by restarting the Xserver in failsafex mode.
i used to watch bloomberg tv online at [url] well in ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) but recently after i upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 (64bit), it doesn't work any more. it is just loading forever.also i noticed that the flash player in [url] changed recently. as the way it loads is different than before. the weird thing is that i can still watch videos. not sure if it's the 11.04's problem or bloomberg's problem.

The 11.3 at 32 bit installs but in this manner I cannot use the 16GB RAM of the machine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed 64bit flash last week when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on my new laptop, and for the past week it has worked without issues.
However a couple of day ago it simply stopped showing flash videos on sites such as ..... etc. I think there might have been a ream of updates around the time this happened but my memory is a little vague.
I have since tried installing the each of the 3 flash codecs in turn that Firefox recommends but these will not install, failing with an exit status of 2. After I tried this I followed the 64bit flash instructions on the Wiki once more to get back to the point when it previously worked but alas this has been of no help.
I have also tried loading flash videos in Chromium and these suffer from the same issue. Anyone have any ideas what could have caused flash to suddenly stop working?
install alt 64 bit 11.04 off cd - get through partioning and then asks for another cd - in this case "Ubuntu 11.04+Natty Narwhal_=Release amd64 (20110426) i'm assuming the alt 64 bit cd requires some sort of vanilla 11.04 64bit cd - where can i download the vanilla version that will work with my alt version. love the os and features but getting beaten down like this - maybe the evil empire will win after all

I have installed Exaile, RhythmBox and Clementine. All 3 have the same problem. I can play 1 song at a time fine. But once I add more to the queue/playlist, and the next song has to play, the program crashes. Even if I click to manually go to the next song, it crashes. I can play videos fine, Flash, mkv (720/1080), avi, etc. I have no issues with any other programs, no random reboots, lockups, stalls, errors, etc. Everything runs fine execpt media players. Process to produce problem on all 3 of the said media players:
1. Launch program
2. Play 1 song
3. Add more songs to playlist/queue
4. Either wait for program to finish and try to go to next song or skip, program crashes.

This is a very new desktop system using an ASUS mainboard with built on sound. I've never had sound working properly and have re-installed many times. One sound will play (KDE4 desktop sound, Amarok audio, even games under WINE) but when a second sound plays, it stops the first one (and plays perfectly), but then the first app is no longer able to play sound. I tried to get Skype going today and have some very interesting results.
It works but on a test call my voice sounds like I'm going for the "Extortionist of the Year" award! Have a listen here if you feel like a quick laugh - [URL]. Great effect for issuing ransom demands, but not too useful when calling family. just did a fresh install of opensuse 11.3 with kde 4.5. Fully upgraded everything and then added the packman repo. Everything else is stock. But I found when trying to install libxine1-codecs that theres only a 32 bit version and no 64 bit support. This seems different than my past experience.

Strange thing is that, the HDMI works without any problem on Windows 7 (but alas, the 1080P graphics quality is very poor) The audio output is set to HDMI in the "Sound" settings. The audio is not muted and is set to full volume. I downloaded ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso & ubuntu-10.04-alternate-amd64.iso ran md5sum's, burnt them to DVDs & CDs but couldn't manage to install the 64-bit version. For some reason the installations abort. I've got Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit version running on the box right now.

I have Ubuntu on both of these drives 1 is Ubuntu 10.10 32bit the other is Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. When in the live environment can I tell which bit I am currently running. (Yeah I forgot to mark them) I don't want to install the 32bit on my 64bit computer (I know it would work but still) I really dont want to redo the usb's if it is at all possible.

Each time it goes through the normal steps of having me accept the user agreement and the popup which tells you to run the "truecrypt.uninstall.sh" script to uninstall. The problem is that each time when I click 'ok' at the last step, my desktop environment freezes. I'm running unity 3d. The terminal I started the install process in doesn't produce any output.
Sometimes when the freeze occurs I can still move my mouse, but none of the menus or windows will respond. Other times the mouse will be frozen as well or it will just log me off. I haven't found anyone else talking about this issue and I honestly don't know where to start looking for a way to fix it.
so i am trying to install 64bit ubuntu on an HP Laptop that was given to me i know the laptop is 64bit capable as i have win7 x64 on it HP Pavilion DV6208nr laptop

now the actual issue is not install failed but when i boot the install media it has weird black and white lines across the screen to trouble shoot i have re-downloaded the iso 2 times and downloaded the alternate installer once (which installs but on first boot is just a black screen) tried installing via usb and 2 separate discs (brand new) what would cause the issue? and should i maybe try an older one like 10.04 LTS? i know 32 bit worked before but i would prefer to have a 64bit OS
