Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Walkman Into Mtp Mode?
Feb 15, 2011
I have a NWZ-e344 Walkman and I'm trying to to get it into mtp mode. I have created a .mpi file that that shows the Walkman as a music device instead of a flashdrive.
While in root account it shows up as a mtp device but not in my regular account how can i get it to read as a mtp device like it does in root in my regular account?

I have a problem with the system detecting my Sony Walkman NWZ-S639F. When I plug the device, the player's screen says 'Connecting', however nothing shows up on the laptop screen. When I was running Linux Mint 10, the player connected with no problem, and since Mint 10 is basically Ubuntu 10.10 with extra software, I think that I miss certain software packages.

I have a Sony Walkman NWZ-S545. I have Rhythmbox 0.12.8. I have a System 76 amd64 computer. I have run Ubuntu (now 10.1) for a couple of years and before that Linspire and haven't had MS Windows for years.
What I want is to be able to simply transfer music files from my computer to the Walkman. Nothing fancy. Drag and drop is fine. (I was hoping that it would be shown on the desktop, that I could open it and access it and drag files to it.)
I looked in Ubuntu help and found: "Ubuntu will work with most portable audio players, including iPods. Normally, all you have to do is plug the player into your computer and then use Rhythmbox to copy songs to and from the player."
When Rhythmbox didn't recognize it and no icon appeared on my computer screen indicating it was plugged in as an external device, I went back to Ubuntu help and found and installed the mtpfs and mtp-tools packages and made sure that the MTV plugin in Rhythmbox was checked. Now Rhythmbox could see the Walkman BUT could not play any songs! And there was no Walkman icon on the desktop.
When I tried to play the 5 sample songs on the Walkman, I got one of these 3 errors:
a. Couldn't start playback - no file name specified for reading
b. No URI set
c. Unable to copy file from MTP device: PTP Layer error 02ff: LIBMTP_Get_Filemetadata(): call to ptp_mtp_getobjectpropssupported() failed.
(BTW, my Rhythmbox setting under preferences - music is for .ogg - can see other options under edit but cannot switch to them. My mp3 songs transferred from my external hard drive to Ryhthmbox beautifully and play just fine)
After further searching, I read I should confirm that libmtp8 was installed and I found that it was.
So I went to Ubuntu Rhythmbox help and read: "If Rhythmbox Music Player does not detect your device as a portable audio player, you can create an empty file named .is_audio_player at the top level hierarchy of the filesystem of your player."
OK - I am stuck here at several levels:
1) Is this what really needs done?
2) If so, how? (I searched ".is_audio_player" and came up with several comments and how-tos, all seeming to involve going into the root directory and inserting an empty file somewhere. First of all, I can't get into my root directory even as the administrator with full privileges! Secondly, I know enough to know that even if I could - I shouldn't!

It worked fine in every other version of Ubuntu, but now when I plug it in, it will appear in the 'devices' section in Rhythmbox, but not anywhere in nautilus. I am using Ubuntu 10.04, with my Sony Walkman (looks like a USB drive with a screen and buttons)
Is this some Apple-like music security feature? is there any way around it?

Got this player just a week ago and Linux have already shown it's dark side. Ubuntu doesn't recognize it.it uses some kind of a getaway which works just fine with Windows Media Player but as soon as I try it on Linux, nothing happens, unless I install Wine, and even then, it just shows the file list .. no way ( Nautilus / Rhythmbox just hangs ) I could remove/add any files.

I have ad724 chip from analog devices that converts VGA signal to composite video, but it requires input in PAL standart. Is it possible to change framebuffer resolution and synchronisation to achive PAL on RGB output? I have try to change this using fbset but there is no change of resolution. Grub runs kernel with framebuffer of 640x480 resolution and i'm able to watch videos using mplayer on cli ubuntu version, but i have problems with setting it up to PAL.Why fbset does not affect to current display?
PS. I have Intel Atom CPU with intel integrated graphics (maybe problem is here?)

This started yesterday.I have been running Lucid since the Beta release with no problems. Yesterday, I found about 20 or so updates ready for 10.04. I looked them over, mostly lib files, so I decided to go ahead and let them update. That evening I rebooted my machine before I left for the night, and it came up with the error "Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics Mode". In a word X is totally hosed. The display is cut just left of center, with part of the windows on the right carrying off the screen to come back onto the screen to the left.
I thought maybe Xconf might have been messed up, but not sure how. The updates I applied did not do anything to Xorg; and my understanding was that I didn't need that file because I am running with an Nvidia card. I tried to "reconfigure" the X settings from the error message, that did not work. I logged into a text only terminal, and copied a good backup of Xorg.conf back into place and rebooted. Same thing, still running in Low Graphics mode.

Disclaimer: I have very little linux desktop experience...I've only used command line stuff for work in my previous life. I am joyfully coming off of a long addiction to MS but am having a bit of a hard time adjusting.
ISSUE: I can't seem to figure out how to turn off suspend mode. I have turned every setting I could find in the power management to "do nothing" and I have turned off all of my power mgmt options in the system bios. A "friend" suggested I remove HAL...which caused me to lose my secondary internal HD and all of my usb devices...and the issue persisted. Every 20 minutes of no action the screen blanks and my monitor goes into standby mode which is making watching movies in bed a less than relaxing experience.
Some background that may or may not be useful: I installed kubunutu 10.04 (2.6.32-28-generic) from cd on a fresh HD. Initially I had issues with the wireless network and alsa/pulse sound. I worked through those through much trial and error but the suspend issue persists. I've uninstalled and re-installed lots of packages I probably shouldn't have been messing with and would really like to avoid a reinstall as this seems to be the final fix I need to get things running the way I want them.

I followed the wonderful guide in this section with all of the steps and whatnot (I forget what it is called) and I got my DVD player working. I have used both the built in DVD player, and VLC with all the required codecs and whatnot. But when I go to full screen, the player (both of them) crash and I have to eject the disc and start over. It is actually kind of weird because I can resize it larger to a certain extent, but I feel once it gets over about 50-75% of the screen, it crashes.

last week I did an update and it may or may not be tied to the fact that now I can only login to Failsafe Gnome mode. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 - Karmic Koala. I've had Ubuntu for a year but I'm not that familiar with it.

After installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS over the weekend I had some problems, which I subsequently solved and thought I'd mention here.
- First, the dreaded Low Graphics (EE)NOUVEAU(0):Error allocating scanout buffer:-12 which wouldn't allow me to change my monitor resolution.
- Second, TVTime television viewer would not launch at all.
Solution to BOTH of these problems:
From Synaptic uninstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (experimental) and reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nv.
Now everything works!

My guess is it starts: phatch -vkc --desktop [action] [path]

I recently migrated back to Linux after a 2 year stint with Mac OS X. One feature I liked from the Mac side was that there were 2 audio modes in terms of volume and mute. For example, I can mute my laptop speakers (just press mute), plug in headphones, set volume, and watch a movie. If I accidentlaly unplug the headphones, sound wouldn't come out of the laptop speakers since they are muted.
Was wondering whether this is available in Ubuntu? I wouldn't want to bother the office or the people I'm flying on the plane with.

I cannot get my driver to work in 10.04 LTS. I've googled all around and still can't fix this. Randomly when I boot up it says ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. It was working yesterday. I had this problem before and it just randomly fixed its self. I have an Nvidia 320m graphics card with drivers from the hardware drivers program.
Heres my xorg.conf file ...
Code:
Section "Screen"
Identifier"Default Screen"
DefaultDepth24
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load"glx"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier"Default Device"
Driver"nvidia"

After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a laptop Acer Aspire 5942G graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, some time after the boot falls color monitor. Color depth is only 65000 colors or more. In all settings, all is well (and the color depth is there spelled 24bit). Color depth is reduced at some time after a reboot. After further experiments with the screensaver was set: color spoils the energy saving mode and turn off the display! After disabling the option "disable display through .." color is now always saved in the norm!

All of a sudden today there was no display on my Ubuntu PC. It seems to be powering on - I get the LG screen when the monitor is switched on - but it goes into "Power Saving Mode". How do I diagnose this? I already unplugged and plugged. Monitor is connected to a graphics card - no change when I switched to VGA.

So, I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. I just did a clean install (instead of upgrade) about a week ago or so. I've been tackling a couple of issues and one of the last ones on my list is with my Nvidia card in the laptop. Nvidia appears to have kindly designed a power saving mode (Powermizer) for our video cards, by clocking down the GPU. However, mine is defaulting to Adaptive mode for Powermizer, and causes much annoyance. While I'm able to switch it to Preferred Performance mode in the Nvidia X server settings, it resets back to Adaptive mode every time I restart the computer. I've tried using the button to save the settings to Xorg.conf, but I think that only saves display configurations such as resolution. I also tried a couple tricks I found online where you can manually edit the xorg.conf file to disable Powermizer completely, but no luck on that either.
